Title: Girl Talk
Post by: Skibas_clavicle on 23 Mar 2007, 13:47
Night Ripper is simply the craziest, sickest, illest album I've heard in a very long time. For those who are not familiar with this album, DJ Gregg Gillis made the most effective mash-up album using your favourite and least favourite Top 40 hits. I was simply blown away when I first heard this album so right now I am going to do two things. I am going to ask everyone to put their own opinions about this masterpiece AND I'm going to propose a game. The game is simply: first, state the name of the song from the album and then list as many of the hits you can recognize and challenge your fellow forum goers to beat you or even help you out! ENJOY!

Way to derail a good thread with great potential there, tommy. Now seriously! I will get the ball rolling the first song off the album is Once Again, artists I can get from this song are:

Ludacris
The Ying-Yang Twins - Whisper Song
The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony

I recognize others but don't know the names of the songs/artist! GO!

I believe the intro bit with the organ is either by Boston or Chicago.

Night Ripper is one sexy-ass album, it was the album of my Summer.

Wikipedia has the definitive list of artists and songs used in the album in the Night Ripper article. Just to ya' know, kill the game.

Not true! It has a list of artists and songs which are recognizable.

I am pretty sure he uses something the Neptunes did after the one-minute mark, but I'm not exactly sure what. And then like two seconds of Oasis.

This is actually pretty timely, I haven't been able to take Night Ripper out of my car for about two weeks.

EDIT: Oh BOY that Neptunes thing is actually Drop It Like It's Hot.

Today was the first day i didn't listen to Night Ripper in a long while, thanks for ruining it julia.
My favourite track is probably Overtime, which uses 1979 by the smashing pumpkins, (i think) that stay fly song by someone i don't remember and Little Lies bye fleetwood mac. among about 4 others

From all the talk, I really need this album. Real bad.

I listenned to this because JC liked it, I couldn't figure it out. I didn't feel motivated to listen to it again. If I wanted to dance or something, I have plenty of music I could dance to, and none of it is mashups.
If somebody would please help me to better understand this album, I'd be grateful.

This might be in vain, but! I really like this album and I think you should give it a second chance with two things in mind

1) So what if you have other things to dance to that "aren't mash-ups"? When you listen to it, don't think, "Well, I have my Smashing Pumpkins and my Fleetwood Mac and my hip hop beats, so what do I really need this for?" Think of it like a visual art for a sec. Maybe someone tore up pieces of a Picasso and a Magritte and glued them together (in a fashion that didn't sound so tacky, no school-glue). Don't look at it and see pieces of Picasso and pieces of Magritte -- consider it a new piece of art entirely. People who hate Picasso might be able to appreciate it in a way they haven't seen it; people who love Magritte might detest it. At the very least, it's a new way to look at both.

2) I will write two when I get back from school.

3) Listen to Overtime. Over and over and over and daaaaance

Seriously just have fun, this album is so goddamn fast. Considering that mashups are usually trite, cut-n-paste methods of putting one folksy thing by one hip hop thing, Night Ripper was done with radical articulacy and fluidity and geez.

Admittedly I forgot my second point, but it's a really awesome album.

Ok, so I heard Night Ripper for the first time tonight, and I must say it's a TON of fun to listen to.  I forsee this being my new obsession.  I literally had to hit pause, take my headphones off for a second and say "Oh My Friggin God" out loud when I heard the sample from Holland, 1945.  Amazing.

'Oh come on Darryl, go dance with those girls, it'll be fun'
'Oh come on Darryl, take just one, it'll be fun'
'Oh come on Darryl, sports are great, join in, it'll be fun'
'Oh come on Darryl, come to the party, it'll be fun'
'Oh come on Darryl, start a band a tour the UK, it'll be fun'
'Oh come on Darryl, listen to Girl Talk, it'll be FUN!'

NONE OF THOSE THINGS WERE FUN JC. MAYBE YOU JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT FUN IS?

I've been listening to this for a few months now. I didn't realize hip-hop was an appreciated genre here.

Right now, i'm hearing fergie, the gal that sings the milkshake song, kansas, & young MC. I think
1:25 ino track 5 is the high point on the album for me.  Juicy  + Tiny Dancer = WIN.

I love this album

This is, as Julia stated, the illest thing I have ever listened to. I don't know if this is real or if I have died and gone to a magical mashup heaven.
