I saw a new Fountains of Wayne album was coming up and was sure I'd be buying it, but now everybody is saying it's terrible.
Welcome Interstate Managers got an 86 on metacritic -- the new album has a 59 so far.
Is this just a bunch of indie hipsters mad that Stacy's Mom was a radio hit, or is the album really that bad?
-
I dunno. When I am in doubt about a critic's opinion, I do this thing, where I like, listen to it myself and form this thing, like, I think it's called an opinion

I love it when people are sarcastic dicks on the internet.
-
fountains of wayne totally sold out

Yeah...you see, I have this thing called 'Money'. It's something I'd prefer to hold onto. Which is why I ask other people's opinions. As sort of a filter to guess whether or not having something is worth the money you need to spend to acquire it.
FoW sold out, but that doesn't necessarily mean their music is bad. :-D

selling out is a joke
only diy anarcho punk bands can sell out
-
"selling out" = ???
Anyways I'm sure the album has leaked. Have you checked Soulseek or any torrent websites? Their Myspace? Pandora or Last.fm?
Have you visited your CD store and asked to take a listen? A lot of stores have this policy.
I would help you but "Stacy's Mom" is literally the only Fountains Of Wayne tune I've heard. Two of the gentlemen involved in that band, however, have an exponentially more sophisticated Euro-pop project called Ivy. If the new Fountains Of Wayne record doesn't strike your fancy, that would be a good purchase.

Traffic and Weather leaked on Oink about a month ago. To my ear it sounds less distinguished than random '90s pop like Marcy Playground. But I guess if you grew up in the '90s it could make you feel nostalgic.

everybody is saying it's terrible.
I'm gonna have to go with everybody on this one.
-
The Onion A/V club gave it an A. I gather that means you're allowed to listen to it.

This is just the inevitable, "It's long-awaited and it's new, therefore it must be terrible," response. The new album isn't really all that different from Welcome Interstate Managers; I have no idea how you can be a fan of one and hate the other.

A 70 on Metacritic (http://www.metacritic.com/music/artists/fountainsofwayne/trafficandweather) ain't half bad.

to anyone who has ever heard fountians of wayne: you should hear Robbie Fulks' "fountians of wayne hotline." you will laugh yer pants off.
slightly distorted melodic guitar solo!!
-
never really been a FoW fan, altho my gf has like all of thier cds...they're ok but nothin i would buy
-
I have all their albums. I've loved each album a little bit less than the one before but WIM had 'Hey Julie' on it, which is my favorite FoW song of all.
This new one isn't very good. I downloaded and listened once and deleted. It's just really boring. It's basically a full disc of the worst songs from all the other albums.

The "Let's sing about the suburbs!" thing is really running out of steam.
