Tommy, that is a really good song. I remember you giving a link to their record label a while back, and that it had a few good bands on it too.

Can you post that link again or am I thinking of another band?

One band that I'm pretty sure not many people have heard before is a band called The Ditty Bops; and oh, how I love them so!
Then again, it may be my 13 year oldness tuning into their lighthearted melodies, pretty harmonies, and way cool instruments that you can hear in the background, but nonetheless, they're good. ^^
I suggest Sister Kate, Ooh La La, or Wishful Thinking for first time listening.
Those are the songs that got me hooked onto them.
Hurr hurr. (http://hypem.com/search/The%20Ditty%20Bops/1/)

Maybe somebody have heard of this, but most people don't:

Turisas (http://www.turisas.com)

A finnish folk-metal band. The name comes from a creature called "Iku-Turso", which is mentioned in Kalevala, the national epic of Finland.. Turisas is also a god of war. That information combined with the first album's name, "Battle Metal", you probably get the idea of the music. If you search for music, which is peaceful, has clean vocals and lyrics tell about beautiful things... don't even think about Turisas. If you search for music with harsh vocals, folk instruments alongside with electric guitars, lyrics that tell stories about ancient battles and great shows with sword-fighting and epic atmosphere, your choice will be Turisas. And fuck the guitar solos, all solos are played with violin, accordion & flutes. Second album, "The Varangian Ways" will be released in June 2007.

Songs I enjoy most:

Sahti-Waari
Battle Metal
The Land of Hope & Glory
Rex Regi Rebellis

You can hear few songs here: http://myspace.com/turisasofficial

The band I love that nobody seems to have heard of is motherfucking (http://www.myspace.com/ladyhawk) Ladyhawk (http://www.ladyhawkladyhawk.com/). I saw them perform opening for The Constantines on Wednesday. Their album is only outstripped beyond their phenomenal capacity of their live performance. In fact I am so serious about you having to see them that I'm putting down their tour dates here.

I think the Beangrowers are pretty spiffy. Although I think people do know about them, but only Germans and other assorted Europeans. So I guess it's a "no one ever heard of" band. (Unless you have! Then tell me.)

I really want to go see Ladyhawk play with Tapes N' Tapes, but it's at the silly old Plaza Club.  Hopefully I'll have secured myself a fake ID by then.  Hopefully.

They Shoot Horses Don't They are a band I quite like, that no one else has heard of.  I've been trying to see them live for a while now, but I always seem to miss their shows.  Apparently they're incredible live.  Here's a song. Fuckin' barge your way in man. Climb through an airvent. Bust down a wall. Whatever is needed.

Incidentally they're signed to Jagjaguwar, whose bio of them yields the following quote:

Quote
Ladyhawk's core is bracing rock. Neil Young's Tonight's The Night is the hailstorm on the hood of The Replacements Let It Be, while distorted guitars invoke the thread and swerve of Silkworm and Dinosaur Jr.

Accurate only in spirit. Those bands are synthesized and blended less in direct sonics and more in spirit and ambition.

I'm a big fan of Clann Zu, as some of you may know.  They were sort of a gothy folky prog band with very sloppy songwriting.  However, sometimes their songs hit home in a really big way for me.  I am also a huge fan of My Disco, one of the bands that Clann Zu guitarist Ben Andrews in currently in.

My current obsession is The Angelic Process. REally obscure. Their last album was released in 2006, and it's almost sold out. It's like MBV and Neurosis mixed together, witha  huge amount of distortion dropped on top. It's pretty hard to get into quickly, but repeated listens reveal a huge amount of melody and gorgeous-ness beneath all the fuzz. Amazing band, definitely one of the most sonically 'powerful' bands ever. It's been described as 'like watching a star being born' which is quite accurate. Check their myspace at: www.myspace.com/theangelicprocess, check out 'Crippled Healing' on it, and then hurry up and buy their album.

One other recommendation would be a band called Nadja. Imagine what would happen if sunn O))) and MBV made a record together. It's heavy and droney, sure, but also really beautiful, and fuzzed out in the shoegaze way. The compostional skill that lays behind a Nadja track is pretty incredible. Nadja's definitely a bit of a patience tester, but if you don't mind slow music, you should love this heaps. Melodic and fuzzed out but so freaking heavy.. Like Jesu slowed way down and made even prettier. I would recommend you find the 'Bodycage' Album, but there's tonnes of great releases.

That was really obscure! But at the same time it was so damn cool.

It reminded me about the first Diablo's (the pc-game, Blizzard, probably everyone knows it) soundtrack a little, somehow I got the same feeling. Even though the music is bit "messy" and it might break someone's ears, it had great atmosphere and was totally worth listening.

Aside from Johnny C on this forum, I have come across precious few folk on the internet/ever who have heard of one of my favourites, Wax Mannequin.

MYSPACE'D (http://www.myspace.com/waxmannequin)

And seriously, speaking of Johnny C.....why'd you have to post a reminder that I can't go see the Ladyhawk/Tapes'n'Tapes show in this town? It's when school is out, and therefore I am not here, and instead will back home in the middle of nowhere.....nnnnngh. Oh well.

Also, They Shoot Horses Don't They ARE incredible live.

Can't say this band is completely unheard of...but they only reason I know them is because my parents played them for me during my "formative years"  That being said, I have a deep psychological attachment behind this group...

They're called Raven and they're based in Portland, OR. They, surprisingly have a few albums on iTunes...as far as I can tell they do covers of archaic celtic music.

and I have just found that there is a hardrock band called Raven as well...Ah well so much for unique one word band names, huh?

Diablo Swing Orchestra (http://www.myspace.com/diabloswingorchestra), a Swedish Metal/Classical Dance fusion band.  That's probably not the right way to describe it, but it's the best I can come up with.  They have one CD out, and it is quite awesome.

Indeed. But deservingly so.

An obscure favorite of mine would be Lykathea Aflame (released one cd under the name Apalling Spawn, one as Lykathea Aflame and the next one will be released under Lykath?). They play melodic, technical death/grind with middle eastern folk influences. And not just gimmicky folk instruments, but grindcore riffs based on folky chord progressions as well.

where i live im surrounded by people who have never remotley heard of any of my music, you guys would though so i have to pick wisely....hmm

-AlpineStars: no not the bikes-and-whaterver company. its a Electronica band that'll make you swear your off somewhere in the alps, all ther music is just so...wintery. The band is impossible to find due to the name after the aformentioned company and that the band website (which ive never seen) is gone.

Carbon Kid (feat. Brain Molko) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRqI0l9euvU

Snow Patrol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqr8KRTzgzk

also they got on Itunes as well (yay)

- X Japan: really not much about this band i can say without losing my sanity. its a Japanese Visual Kei (did i spell that right?) Metal band that harkens back to the 80's metal sound, but faster. Also they pretty much hold the record for longest power balled at 28 something min. (36 min. live). have fun finding some

i think thats it for right now, i wanted to throw in Nightwish but you prolly already know them

I don't know about the rest of them Suk, but Snow Patrol got some pretty major press coverage here in England around the release of their last record, and are pretty well known.

As for bands that I like that nobody else has heard of? I don't know, do people know Klashnekoff yet? He's pretty much the only hip-hop artist who has produced work that I think is intelligent, original, and enjoyable. Plus, he's English.

I'm into Pelt, Fursaxa, Jack Rose, Golden Ball, and various other members of what has been called the Psychedelphia scene (meaning really odd psych-folk musicians/groups from Philly).  More well-known representatives of Philly in the same vein include Espers and Bardo Pond.  All 6 of these bands/artists are well worth looking into.  Jack Rose in particular is astounding.

Everyone in the world should listen to Ramona Cordova.

I'm also a big fan of various stoner/heavy psychedelic groups that few have heard of, like Colour Haze, Hypnos 69, Pharaoh Overlord, Black Nasa, earthlings?, 35007, 500 Ft. of Pipe, Beaver, Poseidotica, and Yawning Man.  Again, all highly recommended.

I'll see what I can come up with...

This World Fair (http://www.myspace.com/thisworldfair)
I saw them open for The Spill Canvas last month and they were insanely good live, and very friendly- I was front and center during the show, so I was chatting with a couple of them between songs. One of their new songs is on the soundtrack for the movie "Disturbia," which is totally cool. I really regret not getting pictures and autographs now.. :)

Nick Motil (http://www.myspace.com/motillive)
I've also seen this guy live. He played at my university a couple months back, and his show was really good. Also, I got to talk to him afterwards, and he's a pretty funny guy. His voice is pretty unique, which I think is cool

Amsterband (http://www.myspace.com/amsterband)
Another band I've seen live. Their show was fantastic because they played a little bit of everything. Their style is pretty distinctive on its own, but they added in covers of The Postal Service along with some country and some classic rock. Also a very friendly, hilarious group of guys. I really want to see them live again.

Ryan Taylor Bliss (http://www.myspace.com/ryantaylorbliss)
I friggin' love this guy. His voice is just so insanely good, that's all there is to it. All of his original songs are fantastic, but the covers he has posted are amazing as well. I only wish that I had seen him live at some point, but no, I've just listened over the internet.

Shearwater (http://www.myspace.com/shearwater)
Probably the most mainstream of all the bands/artists I'll post, but I love them too much to not pimp their stuff. They're another band I would kill to see live. If anyone is familiar with Okkervil River, you've probably at least heard of them, but if not, now you have.

Blu Sanders (http://www.myspace.com/blusanders)
One last artist that I've seen live, and also at my university. And yet another voice that's very distinctive and I am practically in love with. His style is a little more country than I'm used to, but one of his songs, "By His Side," is one of the most amazing pieces of music I've ever heard. I really, really want to see him perform again.

The Life and Times - http://www.myspace.com/thelifeandtimes - Midwestern shoe-gazy indie rock featuring Allen Epley from Shiner.

Ring, Cicada - http://www.myspace.com/ringcicada - Largely instrumental, guitar driven rock.  The former bass player, Eric Abert, now plays in the Life and Times.

Traindodge - http://www.myspace.com/traindodge - Big Riff Rock ala Houston, Shiner, etc.

Grand Ulena - http://www.myspace.com/grandulena - Noisy, experimental stuff from Darin Gray of Dazzling Killmen fame.

Riddle of Steel- http://www.myspace.com/riddleofsteelband - Prog-rock with a small dose of cheese and irony, (but you knew that by the Conan refernce in the name).

The Glare of Day- http://www.myspace.com/theglareofday - Sort of a Sunny Day Real Estate, dreamy but driving feel.

Fragile Porcelain Mice- http://www.myspace.com/fragileporcelainmice - Very powerful, groove oriented, noisy stuff.  Almost like a hyper-rhythmic Jesus Lizard.

Based on what I've found around the internet, C.R. Avery was once in The Fugitives, but isn't anymore.  He did beatbox on two or three of the songs on their latest album though.  Anyway, you should all be checking them out, because they are mighty amazing.

Since lately "Beirut" (a.k.a. Zack Condon) has brought attention to the music of eastern europe with its polka-rhythms and fancy instruments, I wonder if anybody on this forum has yet happened to come across norwegian band "Kaizers Orchestra". Over in europe they entertain a small but hugely devoted fanbase (in particular central and, of course, northern europe). In contrast to "Beirut" they really can (and DO) rock! Be it on CD or - even more so - when on stage.

Maybe you wanna check them out on myspace: http://www.myspace.com/kaizerso (http://www.myspace.com/kaizerso)

Ah, and yes: that's Norwegian what they are singing (for information in English go to this German Website http://www.kaizers.de/x_index.php (http://www.kaizers.de/x_index.php) - there you'll also find the lyrics translated).

[Edit: spell check]

A Wonderful is a lovely largely solo project of this guy Tim Wilson from Rochester. He started a label with some friends and they each have mostly solo bands. A Wonderful is the best of the bunch, featuring mostly shorter songs with (often) clever lyrics. It's pretty lo-fi and pretty great too.

Also listen to Haggard, they're a bit more heavy and the vocalist has a very deep and grinding voice, but the mix of a full clasical orchestra with ultra heavy death metal is pretty sweet.

I have the same problem with Unexpect that I have with a lot of those uber-tech avant-garde metal bands, which is that there's no sense of cohesiveness to their music, it's all about beating you over the head with its complexity...and I'm a fan of some pretty wanky stuff in a lot of genres.

I'm really diggin' The Angelic Process. I'm on my girlfriend's laptop, listening to it over the noise of a hair dryer. Somehow I think it will be way better when I'm at home in a quiet room. >_<

I'll toss www.myspace.com/fromexile (http://www.myspace.com/fromexile) in here. They're an unsigned metal band from Atlanta. The vocals are black, but I'm a bit at a loss as to the instrumentals. They're melodic and tight, but also pretty jammy (yes, all at once). Check out Soliloquy of Death if you listen to one song. They are my favorite band, period, and 80% of what I listen to is metal. Highly reccomended.

DEAR GOD LET THEM GET SIGNED SO THEY TOUR TO THE MIDWEST.

An earthy Michigan duo with roots in indie, classical and traditional music, Breathe owl Breathe has cultivated a musical landscape that is at once playful and reverent, silly and heartfelt, mysterious and familiar. Micah Middaugh and Andrea Moreno-Beals experiment with an array of stringed instruments (most notably the cello and guitar) and vocal harmonies to texture their original songs. They were raised by rivers and gardens and their instruments tell the tales. They traveled to cities and islands and their voices tell the tales. They are here for you, Breathe owl Breathe.

Guys, posting a band name with no link and no description of what it is or why you like it is pretty dumb. If you really love the band you're posting, you can spare a few sentences you are describing.

Also, these kind of 'name a band' threads are a lot more fun for everyone when you actually respond to what others post, instead of just posting your own band.

There's an unsigned indie-rock band called Colours Run, out of Manchester, that I am totally in love with.  The closest band I can compare them to is probably Guster.  Lots of piano.  You can listen to both of their CDs in their entirety (minus one song from Cynical Wonderful and a thirty-second clip of "Pilot Light") on last.fm if you do a search for them.  Their CD (a demo, actually, according to lead singer Tim Cameron, on their website message board, coloursrun.com/forum) is also available to buy at cafepress.com.  On their message board they've been announcing an EP available soon which will contain five songs.

I also really, really love The Inklings.  I keep thinking of them as "a more melodic Breeders" but that's not totally accurate.  Their entire CD, Rhizomes, can be downloaded at last.fm.

Man, I just can't get into the Angelic Process band you guys are raving about.  There's too much white noise as opposed tonal fuzz that the shoegazers get.  That and they don't know how to use reverb and use way too much of it.  And it's the same chord progressions over and over.

And I hate how a metal band is considered "complex" because they use classical instruments (like with Unexpect).  If anything, I would consider that eclectic.  I know it's not the most complex metal band out there, but Norma Jean is one of my favorites.  Everything from their rhythms and time signiatures to their atonality and dissonance is complex.

But anyways, if you guys want complex music, listen to Peter Maxwell Davies' "Eight Pieces for a Mad King".  Or anything by John Zorn.  Henryk Gorecki's "Symphony No. 3" is also amazing.

One of my favorite electronic groups is Efterklang.  And they're on myspace so you guys can listen to it.  http://www.myspace.com/efterklang (http://www.myspace.com/efterklang)

Norma Jean isn't metal.

Also, since when did complexity mean something was good. I can see the argument for virtuosity, but complexity is a completely different thing, and also, to be frank, something like Whitehouses 'Great White Death' is probably as 'complex' as anything ever released by Zorn.

I'm presuming nobody has heard of them because I've been trying to torrent some of their stuff lately and I haven't been able to find it anyway. They were an indie pop band back in the 90s, and if you've listened to Triple J much in the last five years, you might have heard some of Jodi Phillis' solo stuff, but tracking down their CD's is a bit of a pain.

Couple of great Melbourne bands that people in their particular 'scenes' might know:

The Basics (http://www.myspace.com/the3basics): These guys do this really awesome 60s thing.  Like, it's absolutely unaffected, which might not be understandable from the perspective of someone who's just heard about them as a band that 'do the Beatles and the Stones and the Kinks and the Police' - I mean, that sounds like one of the most affected things ever, but they absolutely pull it off.  Just really good songs, with nice three-part harmonies.  Their drummer is Wally de Backer, who you may know as Gotye.

They just released (last month) their new album Stand Out / Fit In, which is pretty damn good.  Their earlier EPs (especially For Girls Like You) are better, and from what I've heard (I live in Perth and haven't experienced it, since I only heard about them since my last trip to Melbourne) they are a really killer live band.

Reverend Funk and the Horns of Salvation (http://myspace.com/reverendfunkband): Aside from having pretty much the best band name ever, these guys really have the funk (something a little different to the Basics).  They're a fairly permanent fixture at the ultra-hip Manchester Lane jazz club in Melbourne, and unlike the Basics, I have experienced their show, and it is really really great.  I'm not sure how easy it would be to get hold of their records unless you are actually in Melbourne, as I got them at their show.  But yeah these guys are a really excellent funk band (at least by Australian standards; admittedly the funk scene here is not huge), who know to have, and (more importantly) show the audience a good time.  If you have a chance to check them out you are guaranteed to enjoy yourself unless you are, you know, dead.

No seriously how is that not saying Norma Jean is a metal band. I await a detailed explanation.

Well, since I'm essentially getting attacked by people here, I might as well defend myself.

If you go back and look what I wrote, I originally said that, "I know it's not the most complex metal band out there, but Norma Jean is one of my favorites.  Everything from their rhythms and time signiatures to their atonality and dissonance is complex."  Yes, it's confusing, but it will make sense.  A lot of people were listing off all these really complex metal bands here, including the Unexpect band.  I figured that since so many bands like this were being mentioned that a lot of people liked this complex metal here.  So I then made the statement, intending to say that this band isn't exactly a complex metal band like so many of you seem to like, but Norma Jean is a band you might find that you like.  Of course I know Norma Jean isn't a straight up metal band.  That's why I like it.  Being a drummer, I get bored with three minutes of straight sixteenth notes in the double bass and D power chords.  Norma Jean fits better into the metalcore genre (just to show that I know music), being more towards the hardcore end of the two.  I'm sure some metalheads will come here and say that Norma Jean isn't metalcore but that it's hardcore.  And to that I say that hardcore is the old punk style.  And Norma Jean definitely isn't punk.

So yeah, again sorry for the weird wording.  But I know what I'm talking about, so take it easy.

I can't really judge since I've never listened to Norma Jean, a good friend of mine (who has sufficently different tastes to me) likes them a lot, i think they are a similar style to Alexisonfire since he mentions both bands in the same sentenace a lot.

To keep this on topic another and I've been getting into lately is Countess, they been around for a while but I don't think many people outside a few select metal circles really knows them. Really good raw Black metal from Holland, they have a lot of albums out my favorites are 'Book of the Heretic', 'Heilig Vuur' and 'Shining Swords of Hate'.

Riddle of Steel- http://www.myspace.com/riddleofsteelband - Prog-rock with a small dose of cheese and irony, (but you knew that by the Conan refernce in the name).

Bumping this thread to give some more enthusiastic support for Riddle of Steel.  They've got a great prog sound that both reminds me of a lot of music I loved in the 90's.  I did a search to see if anyone had mentioned them here and this is all I came up with -- so yes, not enough people have head of them!  Check out "Deeper Still" and "This is a House of Lies" on http://www.myspace.com/riddleofsteelband . The band is currently mixing a new CD which should should be great.

...

Now to add something new, let me recommend The Big Sleep (http://www.thebigsleep.net/).  Described as "psychedelic" and "post rock" you can hear a lot of modern influences mixed with references back to Zeppelinesque rock (whatever that means  :-P).  They've released one full-length album which is very hit-and-miss but contains a few real gems.  Check out two of the better tracks here (http://www.thebigsleep.net/audio/sott/TheBigSleep-Murder.mp3) and here (http://www.thebigsleep.net/audio/sott/TheBigSleep-Untouchable.mp3).  6 out of 10 tracks on their first album are instrumental but the understated vocals on "Murder" compliment their sound very well.  I'm hoping that these guys keep going and put out some more polished music in the future.

sleepytime gorilla museum.  they rock.  think avant guarde prog-metal. lol.

another way i've heard them described is, if you were to go back to the 1920s and explain in words what metal sounded like, but didn't let them listen to it, and got musicians together to play it without the benefit of modern instruments, you'd have SGM.

edit: i realize now how hipster-snob this post sounded.  i really didn't mean it to   but, they really are good musicians.  they just have some strange sensabilities.

I am a fan of Cinema Strange, they're pretty obscure and bizarre.  Catacomb Kittens is my absolute favourite song by them.
Also Zombina and the Skeletones, I don''t know if anyone here has heard of them.  Nobody Likes You When You're Dead is one of my favourites of theirs, also Meteorite.

Norma Jean fits better into the metalcore genre

Which is probably why they are so dangerous.  Seriously, you will turn into a toad if you continue to like metalcore.  Toads like metalcore.  Metalcore is for toads.  It's toad music.  I don't think it can be said any clearer than that.

Mason Proper - Awesome band from Alpena (bumfucknowhere), Michigan, they tour the midwest quite a bit. I just caught them in Chicago last week.  http://www.masonproper.com (http://www.masonproper.com)  They have a full album out, though I'm not sure if it's on a label or not.

Ra Ra Riot - Really good indie rock band. From Syracuse, NY. http://www.rarariot.com (http://www.rarariot.com)  They only have a short EP out, but its all good stuff.

So Long Forgotten - I have to plug this band because my roommate is in it, but that aside they are amazing, are just finishing a national tour next week, and are getting signed onto a record label as soon as the details are worked out.  http://www.myspace.com/solongforgotten (http://www.myspace.com/solongforgotten)

Okay that's enough.  If I were better at describing music I could tell you more, but I can't do it justice so you're better off just checking it out yourself.

There are several bands I really like that I think are unknown, but I may be wrong.
First is my all-time favorite artist: Warren Zevon.   http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=161121753
The general category Zevon falls into is rock, but he once said it was more like Heavymetal folk.
Next are some semi-local rockers called Subcurrent http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=19495191

Then there are some comedy-song artists
Flight of the Conchords: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=75614314
Then there is the more geeky Jonathan Coulton http://www.jonathancoulton.com/

Lastly there are Drist and The Bags, but you should know about them if you play the Guitar Hero series.

Axe Girl (http://www.myspace.com/axegirlmusic)

I'm aware that Paramore have a large US following, but they're practically unheard of in the UK, save a few people who are truly brilliant.

I do know that there are few people who've heard of Axe Girl and Kenotia, and they're both worth looking into, if you're into chick-rock. Axe Girl have a very ska-punk sound about them and are very listenable. Kenotia remind me a great amount of Paramore.

PORCUPINE TREE

Its an alternative band that plays all sorts of music
They were formed when an artist Steve Wilson did some recordings in his basement.
The labels he went after wanted full bands, so he made up a fake history of the group and made up band members, the initials of which were drug names [ L.S.D ]
Eventually he grew popular in the underground and was requested to play live, and now he has a full band that plays his music.
Porcupine Tree's most recent album 'Fear of a Blank Planet' was released in Canada in April, and the first track is the most played song on my iPod out of over fourty gigs of music.
Everyone I have introduced to them has found at least one song that they like, which isn't hard considering the wide range of genres and the plentiful amount of albums released by them.

This links to a demo of their newest album, though I would suggest downloading more off of limewire to get a real taste of them.

I'll probably post more groups later

*EDIT
I also forgot Lemon Jelly

I'll try to link them soon.

I mean seriously guys, you're listing mainstreamish bands here.

I mean for shits sake Flight Of The Chonchord have a show on HBO!

less talking about shitty scenecore group that used to be a nu-metal band, and more talking about bands that no one has ever heard of! Norma Jean are fairly popular. their latest record hit #38 on the US Billboard.

The Definite Articles is a good band from San Francisco. They have a violinist, cellist, and and violia...ist, and all of them sing.

Jesus Christ! Why do I keep hearing about Paramore on this forum?  They're horrible and all over my damn T.V.!  They're horrible emo/pop-punk bullshit!  Every time I hear them I feel like somebody's shitting in my ear!  And Kenotia played a show in my home town this past spring.  This local promotion group brought them in.  Everything these people brought to town was terrible so I'm pretty damn sure that Kenotia was horrible (despite the fact that I didn't see the entire show).  But, hey, maybe people are into derivitive emo-pop!

First off, no need to be so rude. I love Paramore and just felt like sharing. You don't like it, fair enough, just don't be a jerk.

Second, where the hell do you get off being all shitty about a band that you didn't even listen to? Seriously. Go listen, make a constructive argument, and then come back to me. If you can't be bothered to do that, don't bother posting in reply to me.

Well the thread is about music no one has heard of, and if the band is all over TV it doesn't really apply now does it?

Also if the dude thinks the band sucks, he has a right to say so. I would probably agree with him if I had a TV

I have no problem whatsoever with someone saying they think a band sucks, but to say "every time I hear them I feel like somebody's shitting in my ear", is a bit harsh. I was really more directing that comment at him saying the other band was shit, even though he confessed to not actually hearing the entire show.

Also, as I said in my original post, I am aware that they have a large US following, but I was posting it more for people who live outside the US, like myself. I know of precious few people who are from outside the US who've heard of them, and I am aware that this board is not entirely made up of Americans.

Anyway, back to the topic.

Too lazy to go through and quote, but...

Thanks to the OP for the link to the South African bands. I'm digging that stuff - reminds me of Dispatch :)
I like the music for Diablo Swing Orchestra, but not so fond of the creepy vocals...
Likin' the Basics.
Used to have a Warren Zevon song about hockey, but I lost it somewhere...
I have a Kevin Devine song which is awesome.

Obscure-ish stuff I like... (I don't watch any music TV or listen to the radio at all anymore, so I don't really know what's out there, but here's a list of stuff I don't think too many people know about...)

Popium (http://www.kongtiki.com/bands_popium.php) - A Norwegian pop group - heard them on a Korean drama of all places, although the drama was pretty popular, so some people may have heard of them.
Roger Cicero (http://www.rogercicero.de/) - German Jazz/swing music. Way better than Michael Bublé. Probably not obscure at all in Europe. :P
Thomas Fersen (http://www.fersen.free.fr/accueil.php3) - French chanson. Not sure how to categorize it in American - pop with some jazz influence? I thought he was somewhat popular in France, but I met a French girl in Germany and she said she hadn't heard of him.
Criscoh (http://www.froghatstudios.com/music.html) - Slow, sad, drifty. Also check out his art, it's even better than the music.
Philip Zeplin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Zm_-XGMYR8&mode=related&search=) - Another artist with a music hobby. Alt-pop.
Starlight Drifters (http://www.starlightdrifters.com/) - Rockabilly! :D

There would be more, but if it's too obscure, I probably wouldn't be able to find it, and therefore wouldn't remember it...

Alright I'm getting annoying.

Anyways. My offering for this thread is Mike Keneally and his band Beer For Dolphins. I don't believe he is generally "heard of". You might remember him if you're into Frank Zappa, and he's worth checking out if you are. He's an incredibly talented musician, with as much wild experimentalism, bold jazz/fusion composition, and "out-there" humor, as did Zappa. His second album "Boil That Dust Speck" is pretty fun.

Take a look! (http://http://www.myspace.com/mikekeneally)

A lot of people like Mouse on Mars, and their collaboration with Mark E. Smith on the Whipe that Sound EP, but did you know that they recently released a full length under the name Von Sudenfed, and that it is danceable?

You did?
Okay.

It's being compared to LCD Soundsystem a lot, which displeases Smith, as he was a great influence on that band's sound.

Two bands/artists that I hope get really big someday.

The New Lows (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=9651185) - Good, straightforward NYC indie rock.

Indiefox (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=5837595) - This guy reminds me a lot of Iron and Wine, except his voice isn't really anything like Sam Beam's. Same kind of stripped-down, lo-fi acoustic-and-voice kind of deal, nonetheless.

The best band no one's ever heard of was this one I dreamed once, then forgot the dream.

That's assuming we're taking "no one" 100% literally, to include even the members of said band and the person posting about them.

That said, Bomb the Music Industry! (http://www.bombthemusicindustry.com) is probably my favorite band/collective, and it doesn't get much more "indie" than recording the songs on a laptop and releasing them for free online, letting anyone who learns one of the songs participate in a show, and making custom free t-shirts.

I'm also convinced that unless something absolutely mind-blowing comes out in the next four months, the Pinstripes' (http://www.myspace.com/thepinstripes) new album will top my list for this year.

I've been on a major SomaFM kick as of late, so I've been exposed to some kickass indie recently. Vedera, Tahiti 80, A Northern Chorus, The Lucksmiths,  and We Are Scientists are big faves for me now.

I'm also big into Lizz Wright, Madeleine Peyroux, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band, Project 86, Feist, Mest, Reality Check, and Luna Halo.

CHECKZ EM OUT NOWZ.  D:<

Edit::  Alsoalsoalso.  If you've all heard of several or more of these bands, then good for you.  :3  When i refer to these as bands as "nobody has ever heard of" bands, I look to "nobody" as anybody that I have ever personally spoken to.  And for "oh well this is SO popular on this forum blahblahbalh", keep in mind that I'm almost NEVER in this forum.  So pardon me if I'm a little out of the loop.

Rory Gallagher is a CRIMINALLY underrated Irish blues player who died just over a decade ago.  He formed a three piece called Taste, contemporaneous with Cream (there's some debate as to which group formed first) that was in my opinion far more interesting.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Yml4V-zcf3A (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Yml4V-zcf3A)  An electric blues song.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=P04e-cw61_k (http://youtube.com/watch?v=P04e-cw61_k) A rock song.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=z1zsRRt1FWE&mode=related&search= (http://youtube.com/watch?v=z1zsRRt1FWE&mode=related&search=) An acoustic blues song.

Probably bucking the trend here a little by not plugging an unknown indie band, but variety is the spice of life anyway  :-D

I live in a small town in PA where everybody listens to either Country, Pop, Hip Hop(thats as close as people get to "cool"), or ...what genre is Nickelback? Actually, I live in the wilkes barre area, have a friend that was babysat by bandmembers of Breaking Ben, and a friend who takes karate classes with the bassist. So, that whole genre is big...I don't even know what the genre is...Mopey wanna-be rock guys who all had shitty relationships and sing about it? and why do guys have to sing like old men?! I'm in love with everything  Benny Benassi does.

Goldfrapp is neat too, the lead vocalist has some awesome pipes.

I also like what Harry and the Potters do, very clever stuff

Pepper is righteous, so are the Noisettes

Wrong.

I have heard of and detest Goldfrapp.

I have heard of, and choose to ignore, Harry and the Potters.

I have heard of, and like the Noisettes. I also met them at an airport!

Oh, right, I've forgotten that everyone and their mom has heard strict machine... but there's one song by Goldfrapp that I like and that's Utopia, I like serene songs.
But you got to admit.. Oh oh ohohoh I'l spend my christmas playing wizard's chess!

they're all in the metal category, except for two:
---Without Grief: two records in the late 1990s, the first of which, Deflower, is flawless. The following record, Absorbing The Ashes had a different lineup, and was good, but not nearly as good as the first. I've only met one other person who had a copy of Deflower before I told them to track it down.
---21 Lucifers: the band that features the two original guitarists from Without Grief. Much more brutal, but still with melody.
---Dawnbringer: If you like Nachtmystium or bands that sound like them, check these guys out. Their new record, In Sickness and In Dreams, features 14 songs in under 30 minutes, and they all bleed into one another, and all somehow seem epic, despite not going over 3 minutes. Awesome.
---From The Depths: great american blackened death metal, they broke up sometime in the early 2000s, but after releasing two great records, Elysium and Bereavement.
---Corvux Corax: not the German band, they were an American band that made one record, The Atavistic Triad, back in 2000, then disappeared. Good stuff, but an uneven listen.
---Pyorrhoea: extremely brutal, yet not boring, Polish gore metal.
---Nasum: I'm sure people here have heard of them, but a lot haven't. If you like Napalm Death or any grind and haven't heard these guys, you NEED to. If you don't like grind, but are willing to listen to it, check out the song Fury from the Shift record. Amazing....brutal grind, but with melody.
---While Heaven Wept: American doom metal with power metal type vocals. excellent stuff.
---Rapture: not The Rapture, the Finnish doom band. Two of their records, Songs For The Withering and Silent Stage, are excellent. Their debut, Futile, gets great reviews and I know people who think it's their best, but I don't get it. Generally straight rock beats, but with heavy guitars, brutal vocals, and some clean singing. Check out Times We Bled from the Silent Stage record, and it'll be a good indication of what they do, however this is one of the more "metal" based songs. For a more rock based song, check out Transfixion from Songs For The Withering.

not metal:
----Faded Grey: I think the best band ever from Vegas. Better than Curl Up And Die, Guttural Secrete, and yes, even Panic At The Disco (yep, that's sarcasm). Better than any of the bands who were signed to REAL labels, let's put it that way. Positive, old school hardcore with good lyrics and tight musicianship. They broke up years ago, and only put out one full length, but it's still a great, great record.
---Gordian Knot: Features Sean Malone of Cynic, along with other Cynic members, guys from Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Fates Warning, Dream Theater. Very meandering instrumental music, not sure what category to put it in, but it's great.

Ever heard of I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness?  Their song The Owl is pretty good (but if you don't like instumentals then it is not pretty good)

Yep.  If I remember correctly, Brit Daniels from Spoon produced their first EP.  Really like that EP, but haven't heard more than a couple songs off the album.  "The Owl" has a classy video though.  However, what a shitty name for a band.

-The Holy Mountain
-Total Fury
-From Ashes Rise (now dead, from lack of appriciation)
-Seven Generations
-Final Fight

Eh? Lack of appreciation? From Ashes Rise's only rivals in the jizzed-over stadium crust stakes are Tragedy. And really, stadium crust is getting kind of played out. I mean, Tragedy, From Ashes Rise, The Dagda... there's only so many of these bands needed, and for me The Holy Mountain are definitely one of the ones we could stand to lose. They're not bad, just surplus to requirements. I'd rather everyone got back to kicking out some stupidly fast catchy jams and quit listening to so much metal.

Final Fight are pretty boring. Being on Deathwish, this is a step up from the rest of that label's roster. Seven Generations are so generic there is no way to tell them apart from the 1000000 other bands who sound exactly like them.

Total Fury are ace though, thanks for that.

It's all about Battle of Wolf 359 in the hardcore stakes for me right now though. Utterly crushing. Well, them and Margaret Thrasher. Their CD is called 'Miners Threat'. Amazing.

Check out Ghostland Observatory out of Austin Texas.

Think, Prince meets Cedric Zavala of the Mars Volta, doing a compilation with Daft Punk, under the tutelage of James Brown.

Powers. These guys have only played a few shows here in Athens.  They're the 4 best guitarists in town (2 math rock, 1 noise rock, 1 metal) and the drummer from one of the Math-rock guitarists' band (Cinemechanica).  They're pretty fucking cool live.  They don't have a myspace yet.  But trust me, not only do they have the best guitar wankery band name but they are fucking awesome.

Last night I saw a three bands at a local joint. Elbow Beach Surf Club is a great indie band from Guelph, Ontario (I think) Video Hippos was another. They sounded as if Animal Collective and Death From Above 1979 were put into a blender. Amazing. Also, dd/mm/yyyy were there. They're this Toronto band who sound a bit like a progier Hot Hot Heat circa Knock Knock Knock.

I forget how I even stumbled into these guys... I think their album was on mininova labeled "AWESOME METAL", so I grabbed it, and the title was actually right.
Anyway, they're From Exile (but they're really from atlanta), they're not signed (which is a crime) and they sound like old-school gothenburg melodic death, mostly. The songwriting is just really, really good.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Sea Wolf, and after using the search button it says I'm the only person that has.  I saw them at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland a while back, they were great. Loved them.

i've heard of this band, and they're pretty good. But i may be an exception.

What Made Milwaukee Famous (someone's probably heard of them)

Bombay Bicycle Club (again, probably not the only person. Probably the only person in Toronto.)

I don't know... I really like the name, it's hard to forget and it's catchy.  But that seems to be the trend nowdays, it's becoming more like band sentences than band names ya know?
And I love the video, that's how I found out about them, it is now currently saved to my favorites on YouTube ^_^

Has anyone heard of Emperor X before?

What an amazing band. Actually, it's just one guy most of the time, so I'd be hesitant to call it a band... Still - awesome music.

The little Cinemechanica I've heard has been excellent. Once/if they get something released or up on the web to listen to would you mind posting it? I'd really like to hear this band.

Okay, I've got another one.
Now I'm sure that people 10 years older than me will say that they have heard of them, but whenever I talk about them to my friends, they have no clue who I'm talking about.
And that is Enigma.
I love what they do but there's no one outside of my family who knows about them too.

To save you further embarassment, this thread is over.
