I was wondering if anyone here plays free/open source games. Because Id open-sourced the Quake 3 engine, there has been a great proliferation of FOSS first person shooters based off the Q3 engine. There are also some non-Q3 games which are great.
My favorite FOSS games are
Tremulous (http://www.tremulous.net)
Tremulous is a combination FPS/RTS based off of a modification of the Q3 engine. It is multiplayer only. You can play as human or alien. As either race, the goal is to get kills and to eventually destroy the other teams spawns. Very fun gameplay which relies a lot on teamwork and strategy.
Sauerbraten (http://sauerbraten.org/)
I just discovered this today, and I have decided that it is awesome. An old school run 'n gun FPS based on a branch of the Cube (another FOSS game) engine, it has fast, addictive gameplay in the vein of Quake 3 but with better graphics and interesting editing features. Also has a simple single player option. Better graphics than Tremulous.
Does anyone else play FOSS games?

Narbacular Drop
Cave Story
Grand Theft Auto (is now free at the Rockstar website).
A few, I guess.
-
- Gunbound
- Rakion
- Gunz
- Freeciv (Useful if you're away from a commerical Civ at the moment)
- Little Fighter 2
I'm too lazy to post links, but those are all searchable in Google.
-
Wingnuts 1 for Mac.
it's on the Ambrosia Software website.

Their server is kind of terrible but, http://www.the-underdogs.info/ (http://www.the-underdogs.info/) is a good site for free, open sourced games.
I will second, third, and fourth Cave Story. This is a labor of love free game that some Japanese guy made in his spare time. It's brilliant: sorta like a platformer/shooter in the vein of a Metroid.

Linley's Dungeon Crawl. Best roguelike ever.
And careful on The Underdogs, anal-retentive copyright-keepers. Most of their games are abandonware, which is a nice way of saying "we're pirating it, but the company's gone so no one cares".

Some years ago Ultima IV was released to the internet at large. One of the great R.P.G.s.

SUPER TUX! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Tux)
It's a copy of Super mario bros, but there maincharacter is the linux's mascot, Tux. :) Game is for all the systems: Linux, Windows and Mac OS X.

There's a few listed there.
I love playing Same Gnome in my spare time, which is a pretty lame puzzle game

You can't have one of these threads without mentioning Nethack (http://nethack.org/). That would be tantamount to sacrelige.
-
Y'know... I could give you a link to one game... but how about 101? Or, 90+ realistically, since a few of the links seem to be broken.

My favorite free game is Dicewars, but I'm not sure if Flash games are what you had in mind for this thread. Still, it eats up a lot of time when I should be working.
Cave Story
oo thanks for reminding me, I haven't played that in a while. I got stuck on the tank boss thing and I stopped playing. Tonight I'll try to beat him again.
Seriously folks, besides being a lot of fun in terms of gameplay, it's a pretty interesting story. I'm not sure why someone would release a game this polished for free, but that's fine by me.

slightly related, well it has tux racer (or pp racer or whatever you want to call it) anyway, which is a pretty sweet game...

Easily one of my favorite freeware games is SOLDAT. I think it's foreign, but you can download it in english. It's a side-scrolling 2D shooter, that's rediculously fast paced. There's an odd physics engine in the game too, so bodies have ragdoll physics, as do some of the drops and weapons. There's gore too. And jetpacks. And explsions. It's fun.

I've found that the fireball launcher works well against him (particularly in the second stage of it, iirc); you just stand underneath when he stops and fire as fast as you can, then jump out of the way. Definitely a hard fight though, and you'll want to come out in somewhat good health for the next area.

Our very own Mr. Hocking mad a pretty rad game that killed about an hour of my life called Flamewar (http://www.moondoggieent.com/games/flamewar.html). It is definitely worth a play.
-
I remember flamewar, I thought it was the perfect game. Simple mindless fun, looked incredibly stylish and beautiful. And he made it in his sleep too.
Shame there's no mac version.
I love FOSG games. Unfortunately, being on a a PPC mac somewhat restricts me with what I can play.
From now on, when you link a game, can you list which OS it's compatible with?
-
Is it actually possible to download Flamewar? The link on the site doesn't seem to work for me.
-
if anyone has Flamewar, could they please mail it to me or QC's Gmail account, 'coz that link doesn't work and i really want that game.
