thats some serious staying power.

EGG RAID ON MOJO
EGG RAID ON MOJO!
-
I thought this thread was going to be about me.
Also Futurama joke goes here.
-
To be fair, they're not especially prolific, which helps ensure quality control.
-
We be gettin' stupid in your area/my beats is sick like malaria/but don't worry I'll take care-a ya
-
Sam's is a really excellent record store, I have to say. I spent at least an hour exploring it over spring break.
-
I thought this was going to be about Neurosis.
I should get some more beastie boys. I've got Paul's Boutique and it's one of the few hip hops albums I like.
-
I thought this was going to be about iron maiden, honestly.
-
Best Beastie Boy= MixMasterMike :-o
-
I squealed until a clerk warned me to keep it in my pants.
I would have paid money to witness this.
-
I thought this was going to be about iron maiden, honestly.
Took the words out of my mouth.
Well, either Iron Maiden or Black Sabbath.
-
Black Sabbath Heaven & Hell
Black Sabbath aren't really around any more.
-
This thread could easily be about Iron Maiden. They still kick ass.
-
Or it could be Neil Young.
Here is a game I call "Neil Young's Best Record."
1) Get together with a friend.
2) Pull a Neil Young record out.
3) Put it on.
4) Repeatedly say, "Oh yeah, this is Neil Young's best album."
5) When the album finishes, put it away.
6) Repeat steps 2-5 with a different Neil Young record.
7) Everybody wins!
-
I thought this was going to be about iron maiden, honestly.
Bands making the same album twenty times don't count.
-
Tupac, he been dead for awhile and yet he still comes out with a new album, that pwns in my book.
-
Yeah, but Elliott Smith knows that trick too.
-
I'd say Tupac has it over Smith in that regard. I'm pretty sure since he died Tupac has almost tripled his discography, or something stupid like that.
-
just wait till bob dylan dies...will get his b side and rarities collection
that will be FUN
-
This thread should be about the Flaming Lips. You pretty much don't get more awesome than that.
-
Bands making the same album twenty times don't count.
Explain this comment or die.
I do not understand. :-(
-
He's saying that every Iron Maiden album is the same fucking thing over and over, and they are interchangeable. Which I have to assume is true, since I've heard maybe three Iron Maiden albums all the way through and I can't remember a damn thing about them other than that I was thinking "yeah this is what I expected they'd sound like."
-

I have to disagree. Because multiple lineup changes, subgenre crossovers and a venture into a slight progginess doesn't make for a repetative band. I find most of their stuff pretty distinguished.
-
i think he may be refering to the fact that despite all those line up changes you referenced their current sound could still be classified as NWOBHM 20 years after the movment finished
still i must agree with a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" maxim cause it's still awesome
-

Try listening to self-titled, The X-Factor, and Brave New World.
Sure they stayed in the same genre their whole lives but that's not the same thing as making the same album.
-
Black Sabbath aren't really around any more.
Not to mention they've had a fair amount of sucky suck in their discography
-
The thing I like about Iron Maiden is how they keep managing to put out Fresh sounding albums all the time. No album they've released has sounded like the one before it. If you look at there discography you can sort of see the way there sound evolves:
S/T -> Killers-> NOTB: (78-82) The NWOBHM albums
Then you go from Piece of Mind -> Powerslave: (82 - 85) This is where Maiden went through the 'epic' period, songs like "Rime of the Ancient Mariner", "To Tame a Land", "Powerslave", "Revelations" etc.
Somewhere in Time -> Seventh Son: (86-89) The most experimental period, Concept albums, Synthesizers, lyrics focussed on sci-fi\fantasy
No Prayer for the Dying -> Fear of the Dark: (90-94) Changes their sound again, lyrics and the guitar tone get much darker, Bruce starting singing in a different style . Songs and more topical\political, like "Fates Warning", "Afraid to Shoot Strangers", "Fear is the Key", "Public Enema Number One", "Childhoods End", "Mother Russia", "Judas be my Guide" etc.
X Factor -> Virtual XI: (95-99)The Blaze Bayley albums, X-Factor is easily the darkest album they've put out, much more modern production.
Brave New World:(2000) Bruce and Adrian come back, Maiden now has 3 guitarists, the album itself is a mix of all the era's of Maiden you've got epic "Ghost of the Navigator" and "The Nomad", dark "Blood Brothers", sci/fi "Out of the Silent Planet". Then there's a couple of songs that hint at the direction they'll be taking on the next album: "Dream of Mirrors" and "The Thin Line Between Love and Hate"
Dance of Death: (2003) Maiden redefine they're sound, much more proggy, experimental, lot of time changes, they are finally utilizing the third guitarist, really a very modern album, kind of left a bad taste in a few peoples mouths, I don't mind it.
A Matter of Life and Death: (2006) It's heavy aggressive and dark, yet all the intricacies from DOD and carried over, the guitar work on tracks like "For Greater Good of God" and "The Longest Day" is amazing. Then there's the lyrics, the most topical they've written every song is around death, war and religion, specifically the role the two latter play in the former. Strongest album they've put out since Fear of the Dark.
I don't know what criteria people are using to jump to the conclusion that they've been releasing the same album for the last 30 years, because thats certainly not the case.
-
Yeah, I agree with the others that the claim that all Iron Maiden albums are interchangeable is basically bullshit.
-
Yeah, but some people can't even tell the difference between Black and Death metal.
Also, if we're going for long running heavy metal awesomeness, JUDAS PRIEST!
-
Yeah, I agree with the others that the claim that all Iron Maiden albums are interchangeable is basically bullshit.
But it's sure as hell funny to watch the reaction.
Iron Maiden have not, in fact, just made the same album over and over again. I just find it hilarious to say that.
But frankly, whatever progression they may have made, they've pretty much come full circle as far as I can tell. I'd say the first single from the new album would fit in just fine on the first album that had Bruce singing on it, and vice versa. Admittedly there are progressions. One of my favourite Maiden tunes is 'Journeyman,' because it's apparently their first (????) all-acoustic tune for their entire career. That, to me, is ridiculous, but it's still a hell of a tune.
I think I've just been spoiled, because the bands I listen to like Pink Floyd and Wilco, for the most part made pretty radical changes between two albums or across several albums. Pink Floyd went from twee psychedelida, to West-Coast rock, to stoner prog, to borderline heavy metal, to orchestral rock, to eighties pop-metal, then to prog, across less albums that Maiden have released in total.
So no, the Maiden albums don't all actually sound the same. But if you listen to a Greatest Hits, it's a pretty similar experience song-to-song.

Prodigal Son off their second album Killers, was acoustic.
Have you heard Number of the Beast (the first album with Bruce), without getting into an argument I really can't see how it compares to Reincarnation...
-

I'm pretty sure he has released at least 9 albums post-humously.

You appear to have missed my real point in exchange for my joke point.
-
I think that somebody should make a mash-up of Tupac and Hendrix in honor of them being two artists that seem to release more material posthumously than they did while alive.
-
Guest spot by Johnny Cash?
-
So the Beastie Boys are pretty good huh guys.
-
Has anyone played my game yet?
There's a drinking variant. Take a shot every time you hear something that makes you go, "Yeah!" You won't make it to side two of Harvest.
-
Well, I never claimed to be any sort of expert on Iron Maiden, let alone METAL, but going from my experience that's what I assumed was meant by the statement I quoted above. My apologies.
-
Yeah, but some people can't even tell the difference between Black and Death metal.
I sure as fuck can't (reliably, anyway) and I enjoy both. chugga chugga chugga raaaaaaargh
-

That sounds pretty fun, actually.
But I think thats pretty much because I'm in a mood to drink.

Am I the only person on the planet who has never, ever thought the Beastie Boys were any good?
-
I have a better question, who says "pwn"?
-
I do sometimes.
-
This thread should have been about Springsteen.
-
There's a reason this thread can't be about Springsteen. He sucks, and always has.
Beatie Boys are ok, nothing amazing though.
-
Am I the only person on the planet who has never, ever thought the Beastie Boys were any good?
Intergalactic Planetary was cool by association after it was on Futurama. Kinda.
-
The Beastie Boys have always been a better singles group than an album bunch but I don't think that really negates any of their better work. I didn't really like To The 5 Boroughs but I think the fellas have put out some remarkable records, especially the absolutely masterful Paul's Boutique and large portions of Hello Nasty and Ill Communication. Check Your Head is good as well, though weaker than any of those three records.
I could probably go through each of these albums but suggesting that might actually happen would not take into account my remarkable laziness.
-

Might I ask which Springsteen albums you've been listening to? Born To Run? Nebraska? Darkness On The Edge Of Town? We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions? If not, you should hold your tongue a bit.
-
I didn't catch that the first time. I must have some kind of mental filter to block out crazy talk.
-
I don't know the names of any of the albums I've heard, but I'm pretty sure I've heard them all, and they are horrible. I can't get past his terrible voice. I just hate him, a lot. Is there something I'm missing? Because I'm pretty sure there isn't.
-
Am I the only person on the planet who has never, ever thought the Beastie Boys were any good?
This (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Mk0xmCZQWmk) did it for me.
-
This thread should have been about Springsteen.
I agree with you fully :-).
-
Springsteen quite literally has one up on Maiden because he's only ever made two albums over and over.
I had a bumlove dream about him circa 1985 once. That was an odd one.
-
Springsteen quite literally has one up on Maiden because he's only ever made two albums over and over.
Which two? Because you know, I have to say, I'm struggling to find many similarities between Greetings From Asbury Park New Jersey, The Wild The Innocent & The E-Street Shuffle, Born To Run, Nebraska, and We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions. I could see some of the other albums falling into similar categories with those, but all those albums are rather wildly different.
-
I can't get past his terrible voice.
This is like the Spider-Man 3 of quotes from this forum.
-
That confuses me a lot.
It's predictable and sucks?
-
i still have yet to see anyone mention Tom Waits...
That beautiful son of a bitch has been around FOREVER and still making the best music I've ever heard.
-
KMFDM

Did I just pull the same joke twice in one thread, and people fell for it twice in one thread?
I need to go masturbate.

well, i think we have a pretty good idea of how people feel about your opinions
-
That confuses me a lot.
I'm leaving it open to interpretation. Plus you wedged Venom in there at the last minute because the studio made you.
-
Venom's last five or six albums were all pretty sucky though. They haven't put out anything really good since Prime Evil.
Springsteen is pretty lame. He rocks like styrofoam.
-
are you implying that springsteen is racist
-
In all seriousness, I am no fan of Springsteen's. He's a little American patriotic for my liking - not 'Born In The USA' that is - and many of his songs...'Born To Run' to me, reads like...well, a load of wank, frankly. Not the kind of lyrics that I'm interested at all.
When he does stripped-back, Americana-tinged character sketches, I can relate; like 'Philidelphia' is a good tune, and I own 'The Ghost Of Tom Joad,' which is a good album but I feel like it's the only one I'll ever need.
-
i still have yet to see anyone mention Tom Waits...

I was actually coming in here to see if anyone had mentioned him, and I was getting increasingly panicked until I saw your post and was like, "Whew."
-
Metallica. I mean their early stuff was kinda weak, but they've made it up for it with their recent albums.
-
You're being sarcastic, right?
Please tell me you're being sarcastic. For the love of God.
-
Of course I'm not being sarcastic. I love it when a band loses all of its musical skill and sells out to corporations.
-
unlike nirvana who it's possible gained skill (but no one's really quite sure because it's all pretty bad) and sold out anyway
-

I haven't heard anything after At War With Satan, but Kudos on picking up the reference and running with it
-
I never liked Springsteen either until very recently, although I definitely tried. I had all but given up on his stuff, but then I saw The Brunettes (you guys know the Brunettes, right?) do a cover of 'Born To Run' to close their set and I was like, "Ohhhhhhhhhhh".
-
Sells out? GAHHHHHHH.
Fuck you, fuck selling out.
They sold out because:
- They got paid to make the music they wanted to make.
Yup. Fucking sellouts. How dare they betray us by doing what they wanted to do, for huge sums of money!
-
Metallica is getting payed to pretend they are making the music they want to make. I doubt they even know what they want to make at all anymore. not that i blame them for making money, I just doubt it has anything to do with wanting to make music. Make all the money you want, I don't care. But don't sacrifice your integrity to do so. On the other hand, I do agree that "selling out" is a phrase that should be removed from our speech, because it is really really overused and misused. Also, I hate the use of "corporation" as a word synonymous with evil. Not that it isn't true most of the time, It's just a cop-out and sounds really paranoid. For the record both Sonic Youth and the Flaming Lips are on the same kinds of massive, corporate record labels without coming even close to "selling out", as it were.
-

Repent, sinner! Unless you're talking post-Ozzy stuff. Then go right ahead.
Am I the only person on the planet who has never, ever thought the Beastie Boys were any good?
This (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Mk0xmCZQWmk) did it for me.
Now THAT is the best song/video combination I have pretty much ever seen outside of George Harrison.
-
post Ozzy?
the dio albums were close to their best man
-

But isn't selling out supposed to be accepting money for success in a field of music you don't like?
Of course, I can see how this applies to the Black Album, but that was still heavier than most of what was on the radio. It's not like it was fucking pop, or something. Re/Load weren't pop. St. Anger sure as hell wasn't pop, it barely even had a melody on the whole album. Honestly, I would've considered Metallica sellouts if they had simply continued to make the type of music they made on the first four albums, because that would be a lack of progression and simply pandering to their fanbase.
