I've recently been introduced to this huge, branching genre called Indie. I've enjoyed the little and disparate groups that I've heard, but I'd like to hear more.
It doesn't even have to be new. Just anything you guys would recommend.
Thank you.

I can not talk about music.
I'm not allowed.
Would you listen anyway?
I don't think you should.
Do my recommendations carry weight?
Will my recommendations affect your decision to listen?
Will my opinion affect your own?
I can not talk about music.
I'm not allowed.
I can't be objective.
Because I don't know how.
I won't tell you about music.
But I will give you a map.
I'll help you find your way
Without naming a single band
You can learn all about indie rock
Do you want to learn?
It's 3 am and I haven't for more than 3 hours in 4 days, so I'm sorry if this is a hard post to follow.
Indie rock is hard.
There's more to it than sounds.
It's more about the ethos.
When you ask for indie rock
Is that really what you want?
Maybe you just want pop.
Because indie rock has no sound.
And a sound is what you're after.
Isn't it?
Help me, because I'm confused. I don't know what indie rock is anymore.
Is indie rock a group of friends with a rock band in college?
Is indie rock just "rock with a less mainstream sound"?
Is indie rock music on a label that isn't owned by a major?
Is indie rock the idea that anybody can make music?
When I ask for indie rock. I want you to give me music. I want you to give me music that anybody has made. Because I think that's what indie rock is now. It's anything and everything that doesn't register on the mainstream radar.
Sometimes the loosest definition is the best.
IN CONCLUSION: Sure, you can read the list in this thread. Or you could spend one day on the music forum and download music by every band mentioned. THAT would give you a far better understanding of 'indie rock' than any list in this thread could.
Dear dea moDS. Can we have a thread sticky about what infie rock is again? With links to wikipedia articles, books and such that are helpful on the subject?
For the record, 'punk' is cooler than 'indie rock'. I will probably take on any of you in a debate as to why 'punk is cooler than indie rockoh good lord I am goit tired and going to bed now kthanxbye

Actually, that would be a pretty bomb-ass music selection, as most of the people who post in here have pretty excellent taste in music.
-
you'd also end up listening to ICP though
-
Notice how I said most of the people. :-D No ICP for me please.
-
Whatever, dudes. JUGGALETTE 4 LYFE!!!
-
you'd also end up listening to ICP though
What Emilio, are you not DOWN WIT DA CLOWNZZZ??
-
Clann Zu, because someone sooner or later is gonna bring them up.
Boards of Canada
-
The best thing I can add to this thread is go out and start attending the shows of local bands. Find a group that embodies a particular sound and aesthetic that you feel needs and deserves championing, then proceed to do so. There's no better way to get yourself immersed in real indie rock.
-
In response to Johnny C, word.
And a big thank you to all of you.
-
Basically, Indie Rock is rock music except, for lack of a better term, everyone is a pussy.
There.
I said it. :-(
That said, all the awesome indie bands that spring to mind have already been covered.
-
Get everything by Ted Leo & The Pharmacists. And 'Trompe L'oeil' by Malajube (mentioned above, good call). Then some The Most Serene Republic and Under Byen.
Also, you might as well get listening to Modest Mouse out of the way now, since they're impossible to avoid at the moment. Then every time you discover a band afterwards, even if they're shit, you'll at least have listened to something far worse, to make them sound good in comparison. This also works for Bright Eyes.

-
AmAnSet!
Hey Shane, I know you really love AmAnSet. I have the acoustic demos for Set Free and they make a MUCH better album than Set Free. Google tells me they're avaible for free on the AmAnSet website.
You should pick them up.

Also, I don't know if they count or not, but I second amok's mention of Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, they are fucking awesome and I will plug them at every available opportunity. I second Yo La Tengo as mentioned earlier.
Two that I didn't see (sorry if they've already been mentioned) are Dismemberment Plan and Broken Social Scene. I don't think Sigur Ros really counts as indie (they're signed to Geffen, that's not exactly an independent label) but I like their sound so I will second the motion to plug them.
-
Here's a good strat: choose any of the bands given, they're all great, and use the intornet to find that band's best album. After purchasing said album, iff you find you enjoy it, proceed to download the rest of that band's discography and/or look into any bands name-dropped in reviews for the album you previously purchased. Rinse and repeat for the name-dropped band then keep going and going and going until you find yourself listening to something completely different from what you set out to listen to in the first place. That's the simplest way I can think of for finding new music without being overwhelmed. Or just listen to Panda Bear.

True Sigur Ros are on Geffen, but then again so are Sonic Youth. But let's not quibble about the meaning of 'indie'; if I recall correctly we had the thread only a couple months ago.
I'm gonna say it again: Fugazi.
-
I can not talk about music. [middle] kthanxbye
I was looking for a secret code in this post.
-
Gosh Emilio, I would not start this boy off on Sonic Youth. Give him some time before that.
Wolf Parade
Sufjan Stevens
Whoa! I can understand accessibility, but no need to recommend bad music. The Flaming Lips are a very good idea, though. Still, if he can get right into Sonic Youth, no need to stop him.
Clann Zu, because someone sooner or later is gonna bring them up.
Wow, I thought I was the only person on these boards who actually listens to them.
They don't really seem to appeal to most of the "indie" folks around here.
-
Whoa! I can understand accessibility, but no need to reccomend bad music.
You can't see it but I'm giving you the finger so hard that things in my house are lighting on fire.
OH WAIT SHIT I LEFT A CANDLE LIT SHIT SHIT

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indie_Rock
Technically speaking you can't call The Flaming Lips indie now as they are on a major label the actual term Indie Rock I feel can get pinicky that way
I think the best advice that someone has given here is go to your local scene and just go see a few bands
If I was to give some advice I would say listen to the radio - Radio1, XFM, Radio 2 after 10pm
They put the bad stuff on in the morning and afternoon
Or my radio show you could listen to my radio show

-
If you're going to be picky, then a lot of the bands mentioned in this thread are not 'indie rock' because they're on a major label or under a major label blanket.
-
That's exactly my point technically most of the stuff here can't be called indie rock as its on a major label and some people can be picky about the term but I don't care listen to what you like major label or not

He's right, you know. Good stuff.

If you're going to be picky, then a lot of the bands mentioned in this thread are not 'indie rock' because they're on a major label or under a major label blanket.
This is why when I was a kid we called it "alternative" instead of "indie". Man, if you thought "indie" as a genre label was hard to pin down . . .
-
Yeah, that's cool.
And whoever mentioned Gogol Bordello, I fucking love them, but it's just so hard to find their stuff...
-
The Sunshine Underground - Borders
Sunshine Underground kick ass.
-
i know that indie means independant label, but when i first heard about that "genre" my first thought was, not well known alternative rock bands. but that's just my definition of it :)
