Hey, I've been a pretty big fan of Gogol Bordello for about a year now. Does anyone know of any similar bands?
-
Mmmm....you could try DeVotchka (http://www.devotchka.net/cms/?q=). The slavic side is less evident than in Gogol Bordello's music, but they are very good nonetheless. They also draw from other unusual music traditions, like mariachi and sometimes french music.
Other than that, i know Eugene Hutz has some side projects, but i'm afraid i don't have any links.

Everyone's probably sick of me banging on about them, but you asked . . .
Vulgargrad (http://www.myspace.com/vulgargrad). Though the recorded versions of their songs don't really do justice to how awesome they are live.
-
Bang on about them.
Every chance you get.
The forum doesn't mind.

the two bands werent on good terms last I heard, but I still think you should check out the world/inferno friendship society they have a similar quality to them, and their live shows are a lot of fun.

Love this band. As for bands who are similar, I'm not sure I can help you out!

I don't have any further recommendations, I just really wanted to say I like this band.
And this Vulgargrad band is awesome.
-
Thanks, guys.
Start Wearing Purple is a great song, but I've always prefered "Illumination" from Gypsy Punks more myself.
-
My favourite has actually always been 'Not A Crime.' Especially because it goes space-reggae randomly in the middle.
-
Love Gogol Bordello...
You can try Man Man - although I might be totally off in thinking they sound Gogol Bordello..ish. Can anyone else hear the similarity or is it just me? :P
-
I'd agree with you about Man Man ... they're both weird kinda dancey punkish rock with big ol' hooks.
oh look here is a link to their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/wearemanman)

Google what now?

fuck yeah
-
Something about the chorus of 60 Revolutions always made me want to start hurling molotovs at random locations. Frantic!
-
I saw them live a few months ago... I'm no good at reviews without saying "amazing" a billion times - but... yeah. the show was just fucking amazing. There were all sorts of different people there, which is what I liked - crammed, intense, lots of energy... That Eugene Hutz puts on a darn good show, I tell you what!
-
Great stuff. I suggest:
Taraf De Haïdouks: virtuoso musical gypsies from Romania. If you ever get a chance to see these guys play, don't pass it up.
Beirut - Gulag Orkestar: different but sim'lar in ways. Some definite Balkan juices at work. Although Zach swears no one will call his second LP Balkan.
The Wedding Present - the first CD of the Peel Sessions: for some reason The Wedding Present decided to play some really exceptional Ukrainian folk. Go figure. It totally rocks.

It's probably my favorite, too; that and God-like. But then most of their stuff is ridiculously good.
-
Incidentally, for fans in NYC, they've got a show July 20. And their shows are apparently glorious.
-
I just found out they are going to be at Bonnaroo this year - like I needed more reasons to wish I could go!
