So, I have this concept in mind, something that I think will be absolutly mind blowing, but I have hit a bit of a wall.  Namely, I dont know what kind of music production program to use.  I dont know the names of any (save Fruity Loops) to use for a PC, nor do I know their capabilties. 

What I need said program to do is:

1) be able to record sound from microphone to program
2) mix pre-recorded tracks
3) be able to edit tracks.


Links to websites for programs would be cool, as well as personal opinions/experiences.

I don't have a LOT of experience here, but fruityloops is pretty versatile as far as using imported tracks in addition to its own samples. What kind of editing were you thinking?

I can toss you a copy of FL7 and you can decide for yourself, I guess.

sure, would be much appreciated.  I want to get this underway.

As for editing, what I need to do it record a track off a mic onto my PC, cut it don and get the good parts, then lay other music over top of it.  Then I will need to to vocal layovers after

Audacity is an audio editor for Windows that is free to download and which does all the things you talked about.

Adobe Audition is an expensive and more full-featured audio editor for Windows that has been cracked many times and which you can therefore steal easily if you are au fait with bit torrents.

FruityLoops is not designed to do what you want.  It may do all those things, but it isn't designed with that in mind.

I found Audacity and am gonna give it a quick once over.  Thanks for the input, though FL7 would still be appreciated to try it out.

I use Audacity for almost all my recording (guitars, keyboard, vocals), it's not just for windows either runs on BSD, Linux and OS-X. It's free open source and works. There are other programs like Cubase and by the sounds of it Audition. IMO for amatuer recordings its a waste of time and money trying to set something like that up when all you need to do for Audacty is download install and start running.

For midi stuff (mainly programmed drums) I use a program called tiMIDIty or I'lll just play it through my keyboard and record with a microphone via Audacity again.

Well, I seem to have the basics of Audacity down.  Pretty simple really.  Now I just have to wait for the next rainy day and then I can post a sample.

Audacity is fantastic and free.
N-Track is cheap and very basic, but has a very smooth and easy interface.
But in my eyes, Cubase is the best if you can afford it.

Logic Express is hella complicated to learn as a noob but awesome once you get the hang of it.

I really think DAWs like Cubase/Nuendo, Logic, Cakewalk Sonar, etc. don't fit the bill of what Reno was saying he wanted to do in his first post. 

They're super powerful bits of software, of course, but unless he's going to be sequencing stuff I don't think they're the way to go.  That said, maybe he's having the time of his life with that FL crack right now.
