Title: Field-named bands
Post by: ScrambledGregs on 29 May 2007, 09:32
OK, so this year, there's The Field Music, Fields, and The Field.

What is it with bands having similar names lately?? Lest we forget Wolf Parade, Wolf Eyes, Wolf & Cub, Patrick Wolf, and Wolfmother.

Well, ok, let's agree to forget Wolfmother.

Are we talking about Stars Of Track & Field, or is that a different band whose name doesn't pay painful homage to Belle & Sebastian?

This is already way more confusing than the frog, and the wolf thing.

there's a band in Sydney called The Crayon Fields i think.

I think the band name buzzwords atm are:
Wolf

Field

Patrol (Snow Patrol, Fur Patrol, Special Patrol)

Club (Tokyo Police Club, New Young Pony Club, etc)

Tokyo (Tokyo Police Club, Birds Of Tokyo, teenagersintokyo, Tic Toc Tokyo). actually thinking now most of those bands might be Sydney bands, but the point remains.

Pony (New Young Pony Club, Pony Up!)

Hey, at least everyone seems to at last be over the band name with numbers thing.

Well, there's the Klein Four Group (http://www.math.northwestern.edu/~matt/kleinfour/index-noflash.html), which I think counts since said group (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klein_four-group) is isomorphic to the additive group of the finite field of order 4.

please please please let another math dork come in here

There's a band called The Elysian Fields, predictably enough.  *sigh*

Also just went to discogs.com and did a search in the Artists field (*deeper sigh*) for "field" and it came back with over 300 results.  Of course that includes everyone with the surname Field...

There's a band called The Elysian Fields

I have Tzadik's 'Great Jewish Music: Marc Bolan' tribute album and Elysian Fields are on it covering Life's a Gas. Not bad at all from what I remmember, but I haven't listened to it for some time now.

At least I think that it's the same Elysian Fields we're talking about.

It was inspired by your avatar.  Really though, it doesn't matter if he gambled, because any man who collects over 4,000 hits in his career deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.  Ty Cobb is in the Hall and he once beat up a spectator who had no hands at a game.

Truly!  My friend and I were actually thinking of trying to replace all the Anal Prolapse internet bullshit with Pete Rose internet bullshit.

EDIT: I see that the names "Chuck" and "Norris" in conjunction on these forums is automatically changed to "Anal Prolapse."

Can we have an end to the practice of bands naming themselves after cities from other countries? Its really annoying especially when they pick the name merely because it sounds "cool". For example: There is a band called "Minsk" from Illinois. None of the members are Belarusian. Let some belarusian band take the name for themselves.
Title: Re: Field-named bands
Post by: TheFuriousWombat on 12 Jun 2007, 18:13
It is a little irritating and normally the band names don't sound cool to begin with. 'We're from Japan!' (an American band) and 'I'm from Barcelona' (from Sweden) are just two examples. The band 'Lebanon' is from Israel so that's close and 'Beirut' is admitedly a pretty cool band name. I suppose all bands probably like their own names though and since it has nothing to do with the quality of their music, I guess the name is fairly irrelevant.
