Title: Not ANOTHER recommendation thread (a recommendation thread)
Post by: Patrick on 04 Jun 2007, 01:21
I am coming up on my first paycheck soon. I will recieve another on the 20th. I am saving for several things, but first comes a friend's old Apple G4, a RAM upgrade kit, a Superdrive to replace the broken CD-ROM drive that came with it originally, and an external harddrive of 500GB or more.

Now, other than porn and my own creative dick-aroundery with music, I won't have much to fill up that 500GB external harddrive. So I need your help finding artists I will like so that I can add to my current nearly-30GB collection on my computer at home (which I will transfer as soon as possible).

On the last episode of "Recommend KimJongSick Some Awesome Musics," successful recommendations were:

- Pavement
- Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
- Sleater-Kinney
- Yo La Tengo
- Dismemberment Plan
- Broken Social Scene

Using the list provided above, I'd like the names of more artists who you think I would like. My last.fm profile (KimJongSick) may or may not be useful since my sister is using my computer and using my iTunes and playing her shitty music on it.

Check out Archers of Loaf.  Icky Mettle is a good jumping-off point (Also, it's the only album of theirs I have).

I like their s/t record but You Forgot It In People is much easier to get into and probably just a better album in general.

I think you should try Shudder To Think.

I love Pony Express Record, but also listen to their earlier stuff.

Malajube - Trompe L'oeil
Samuel Jackson Five - Easily Misunderstood
SOIL&"PIMP" Sessions - Pimp Of The Year
Detektivbyran
Monster Movie

Have you listened to Q and Not U, Kimjongsick?  You should if you haven't.

Built to Spill (get Keep it like a Secret)

All I've ever heard by them is "Big Dipper" but I thought it was awesome. I'll check them out in more detail and the rest of those artists, too.

Samuel Jackson Five - Easily Misunderstood

That is a great band name. I am intrigued.

Have you listened to Q and Not U, Kimjongsick?  You should if you haven't.

I have not but I hear good things. I'll check them out.

When I get my good comp up and running again, I'll upload their discography and send it to you if you'd like.

I have a hard time getting into Chin Up Chin Up. MtB are quite good though!

If you like Chin Up Chin Up, check out The Joggers.

Some bands that are pretty cool and within the spectrum:

Nada Surf
Lemon Sun (local LA band)
Elliott Smith
The Bronx
The Exploding Hearts (THEY ARE AMAZING)
The Weakerthans
Beulah
Pretty Girls Make Graves

Definitely check out Built to Spill, they are amazing. I suggest getting There Is Nothing Wrong With Love as well as what jeph recommended.

Didn't most of Exploding Hearts get killed in a van crash?

Tragic. :(

Owls
Low
Wolf Parade
Be Your own Pet
Le Tigre
Joan Of Arc
Stars
Feist
Final Fantasy
The Unicorns
Sunny Day Real Estate
The new Pornographers

None of those should be a huge departure from what you've listed up there.

If you're going to listen to the New Pornographers, then I'd heartily recommend checking out the Essex Green too. The latter's the Cannibal Sea is, to my ears, like a warmer and more organic, less machine-tooled version of the former's the Electric Version.

EDIT: also, get a copy of Devin Davis's Lonely People of the World, Unite! Not because it necessarily fits in with any of the other acts you've mentioned, but just because DUDE! SERIOUSLY.

I think you should listen to: (I can upload these if you want)

The Plastic Constellations - Mazatlan
People Press Play - S/T
Nurses - Hangin' Nothin' But Our Hands Down (Not sure if you'd dig this, it sounds a little bit like Blood Brothers, but what the hey)
Lost In The Trees - Time Haunts Me

Sunny Day Real Estate

A friend burned me some of their stuff. I listened to the first song (he said it was his favourite) and haven't listened since.

Ugh.  I have to agree that Sunny Day Real Estate were a massive disappointment.

I've only listened to How It Feels To Be Something On, to tell the truth.  I've really enjoyed it though, and been listening to it a ton recently.  It's entirely possible that the rest of their catalogue isn't as strong.
