Title: The Tragically Hip
Post by: Scandanavian War Machine on 13 Jun 2007, 12:15
The Tragically Hip are a seriously great band and they are very underappreciated, i've noticed. so i think it's high time we start appreciating them. Use this space to discuss the band and to ask for (and give) song recommendations so that everyone who wants to can enjoy this super band.

these are the songs i recommend the highest:

Ahead by a Century
Boots or Hearts
Courage
Nautical Disaster
New Orleans is Sinking
38 Years Old
At the 100th Meridian

I think you have to like the Tragically Hip to be a Canadian citizen. Otherwise they'll cut you off from the maple syrup and prescription drugs.

Saw the video for Courage on TV when it came out, went off to my local library and dubbed that sucker on to a cassette.  This is how things worked before filesharing, kids. :)  I haven't particularly enjoyed anything else I've heard of them, but they do seem pretty underrated.

I really like Sarah Polley's version of "Courage" from the Sweet Hereafter soundtrack. After I got that soundtrack I tracked down the original version, but I didn't like it as much.

They're really great. I have a concert to attend but later I'll break down some tracks you guys need.

Apparently Johnny C's concept of later is different from normal people's.

I've never actually consciously listened to a Tragically Hip song, which I'm kind of ashamed of, being Canadian and all.  I've heard they're excellent, but they have a fairly sizable back catalogue, and I've never been sure where to start with it.  Suggestions?

This thread inspired me to buy a used copy of Phantom Power for 79 cents tonight.

I'm visiting Canada soon so I figure it's the least I can do.

Okay. I took a listen and honestly I don't feel like breaking down tracks for you, just because the bulk of their albums are so consistently awesome as a whole.

Fully Completely is probably their best - every single song on it is a knockout. So I wouldn't start with it if I were you. Start maybe with In Violet Light, move on to Music @ Work, then In Between Evolution then Phantom Power, then Trouble In The Henhouse. I have friends who also swear by World Container, which is their latest; I haven't heard it but the singles are great.

SWM recommended a bunch of tunes off of their first record, but frankly those are the only ones off of that album that you ought to listen to.

I'm worried. Johnny isn't even responding to my slandering of Canadians anymore.

I'm gonna have to step up my game now, guys.

He rides the barbs like a Mountie rides a horse.

It just falls away like water of a Canada Goose's back.
