Title: The Allmusic 6 degrees of seperation game
Post by: camelpimp on 14 Jun 2007, 18:36
Whenever you look up an artist on allmusic.com, you find an whole bunch of artists somehow deemed to be "similar." If you keep clicking, this can lead you to interesting place. So, by clicking on "Similar Artists", "Influenced By," and/or "Followers" I linked the Rolling Stones and Britney Spears thusly:

Rolling Stones - Marianne Faithfull - Zola Moon - Janis Joplin -Melissa Etheridge -Tegan and Sara - Jewel - Alanis Morissette - Poe - Gwen Stefani - Pink - Britney Spears.

Obviously I've got a bit of practice to do to make it only 6 steps.

Dream Theater --> Joe Satriani --> Steve Vai --> Jeff Beck --> Stevie Ray Vaughan --> Eric Clapton --> Santana --> Cream

So we started at progressive metal and ended up at blues. Not highly surprising.

Tommy, I tried to link Converge to Britney Spears using the website you provided. Guess which one came up "Band/Artist not found?"

After four attempts with none of the 8 bands being found on the site Tommy posted, I have concluded that it is worthless.

Hi, I'm here to completely ruin your game (http://www.bandtoband.com/).

Does this thing only work with 'cool' bands or something? It had no idea who Maroon 5 were, and it parsed The Killers as Breed The Killers by Earth Crisis. And yet it found Einsturzende Neubauten and even added the umlaut for me.

"The path between Can and Michael Jackson contains 10 steps."

EDIT: The existance of Robert Fripp makes a lot of these too easy:

"The path between Einstürzende Neubauten and Van Morrison contains 6 steps."
