Have you heard the new Happy Mondays album Uncle Dysfuncktional? Their first in 15 years? That totally rocks out? In which Shaun Ryder is awesome and not passed out in a pool of his own vomit?
If not, I think you think you should.
A few thoughts, as I give this my second real listen. "Deviants" is about 100 times better than "Jellybean" whose presence on this album as the single puzzles the fuck out of me. "Rats With Wings" is amazing, inspired and has wassher name jazz singer sampled (seriously is that Billy? I don't have the liner notes yet so first person to say gets a cookie, my google-fu is not operational this morning apparently) And "Cuntry Disco" is an awesome name for a track.
I am soooooooooooooooooooo pissed these guys got screwed over for visas I am practically incoherent with rage. I may have to see them in Europe instead.
In short: Shaun Ryder is awesome as a disembodied head, but when he puts a full LP I really get my happy on.

Um. I guess the lead single on this money spinner will be the track that's just layered sounds of lawnmowers with a terrible-quality recording of Mark E Smith scolding some guy and occasional distant electric guitar fumblings.

Shaun Ryder is that distinctly kind of ugly that only a British upbringing is capable of crafting. Billy Corgan is more ugly in the way that a pear or ostrich egg can be ugly. Yes, even when he didn't have a bald head.
Look, the point here is that Mark E. Smith is a real bastard but he's pretty damn cool all the same. Hell, the only thing I've heard by The Fall is The Real New Fall LP which I got for $7 in a record store sale and I like the guy already. MAD MOCK GOTHHHHH

Having never appeared on the cover of GQ or strut upon a runway, I am usually reluctant to call another person 'ugly'.
However, I have no problem saying that Shaun Ryder is an ugly man. Dear God, is that man ugly. As physically unattractive as I might be, Shaun Ryder completely transcends pedestrian or comic unattractiveness. He reaches a level of unholy ugliness that must be the result of Mother Nature's cruel and purposeful manipulation of the zygote. He looks to be fresh from the grave but newly dentured. He is 'avert-your-eyes-children!' ugly, assuming that there is a child in all of us. He is a desperately malnourished human coyote. Here's the thing, though -- it's not a fascinating or freakish ugly. It's just swamp ugly but a whole lot of it. Shaun Ryder, the joke's on you if you believe in a good and righteous God, you ugly man.
And you're ugly, too, Billy Corgan. Holy mother of God, Billy Corgan, you are one ugly human being.

Eh, this Shaun Ryder just looks like a normal bloke and Billy Corgan looks completely unobjectionable in that pic, easily the best I've seen of him bald, and I don't even really like the Smashing Pumpkins. Stop being so insanely fucking shallow.

I'm merely rather surprised to see invective like this on a board where I am regularly criticised for even caring about an artists image against people who aren't even that ugly. In any case it's shallow and pathetic. Tommy, if a face like Shaun Ryders moves you to such paroxysms of disgust, I suggest you never leave your house again.

Okay, I don't get it. Shaun Ryder's not attractive, but not repulsive either. Conor Oberst is unremarkable at worst and a little cute at best. I have no idea what you're getting at with that.

you know, i first read the thread title as "Storm Rider is Black!, whcih made no sense. Then i realised it was about Shaun Ryder, but that still made no sense because he is obviously not black. Then i read it correctly, and it made even less sense because the Happy Mondays were piss-poor at best.

Shaun Ryder's appearance doesn't affect my opinion of his music at all, which is a point that needs to be made. Frankly I think tend to give ugly people more of a chance because I feel their music/personality must make up for their looks.
