Skeletonwitch: These dudes were local for about a year until their drummer dropped out of school here in Cleveland, then they went back.
They are pretty decent, and really nice guys to boot.

Edited to add their names.

The Felon Wind (http://www.myspace.com/thefelonwindband)
Some friends of mine sorta. Stoner metal/named after an Earth song/song about kittens in space. What more can you ask for?

Giant Lion (http://www.myspace.com/giantlionmusic)
More friends. They smoke a lot of weed and listen to way too much Animal Collective.

me and him call it us (http://www.myspace.com/meandhimcallitus)
Screamo grind stuff. They just broke up but highschool never would have been the same without them

Infection (http://www.myspace.com/infectionhc)
Also broken up but they were one of the last tolerable hardcore acts around here.

Irreversible (http://www.myspace.com/irreversiblemusic)
Heaviest shit around. Their keyboardist substituted for an art class in highschool lol. Seriously though incredible stuff.

Thankful Tree. (http://www.myspace.com/thankfultree)
Don't ask why I'm in love with this guy.

Target Market (http://www.myspace.com/targetmarket)
Their first ep was better.

Team Up! (http://www.myspace.com/teamup)
God I miss this band. They were so awesome. Great live shows. They've broken up, but split into Thankful Tree, and Mt. Doom(which I would have posted, except they have no internet page. They're a great noise project)

ETA:
The Floating City (http://www.myspace.com/thefloatingcity)
The Floating City are alright. I actually used to dislike this band a lot,but they've grown on me.

So many Dynamos (http://www.myspace.com/somanydynamos)
Everybody loves So Many Dyanmos. I actually do like them a lot, but I don't understand why some people are obsessed with them.

Berlin Whale (http://www.myspace.com/berlinwhale)
They're pretty much awesome.

I already had a thread like this.  I think it died.  Anywho:

www.myspace.com/theyearsbest (http://www.myspace.com/theyearsbest)

www.myspace.com/orangejuicemusicvt (http://www.myspace.com/orangejuicemusicvt)

www.myspace.com/waitingforamiracle (http://www.myspace.com/waitingforamiracle)

My friend Shane's music:

www.myspace.com/shaneabrams (http://www.myspace.com/shaneabrams)

I was going to add a band called Dialtone.  Which I was in for about a week or two.  But I sucked back then.  I haven't heard much of their new stuff.  I'm tired and lazy and I don't feel much like making sure the URL i first typed was correct.  So there you go.

-Jetplanes of Abraham (www.myspace.com/jetplanesofabraham (http://www.myspace.com/jetplanesofabraham))
-The Acorn (www.myspace.com/theacorn (http://www.myspace.com/theacorn))
-Wooden Stars (www.myspace.com/woodenstars (http://www.myspace.com/woodenstars))
-As The Poets Affirm (www.myspace.com/asthepoetsaffirm (http://www.myspace.com/asthepoetsaffirm))

If you like straight-ahead pop songs or large ensemble bands or folky prettiness or a combination of the above it is a good time to live in Ottawa right now.

I thought that i might share some of the local bands with you guys
The Red Paintings http://www.theredpaintings.com/ (http://www.theredpaintings.com/) i met the violinist from this band in queen st on a Saturday night and she was busking with awesome folk songs

Holy shit, someone else from Brisbane? Hell yeah. I love that lady. One time I was really drunk and sad in the Queen Street Mall and she played Lady Madonna to cheer me up. She is a swell lady. I saw her at an art exhibition the other night playing as well as people roamed around and looked at art. The red paintings are a fantastic band, one of the most truly unique bands to come out of Brisbane in the last 10 years.

It's just a shame that all my other favorite local bands don't really have tracks up that represent their sound very well, but there is a supremely excellent gig at Club Phoenix this friday that brings together three of my favorite bands. If you are free, I strongly suggest you check it out if you haven't heard these bands before.

Ponyloaf (http://www.myspace.com/ponyloaf) are a band that use electronics to make music you can listen to. I am terrible at describing music that doesn't use guitars, but basically it is three dudes on synths being fucking awesome. Their samples on myspace are presumably quite good because their album is fucking delicious.

Skypi (http://www.myspace.com/skypimusic) are basically the Prog band in Brisbane at the moment. They're one of those rare bands where everyone digs them. The metal heads love them because they're crushingly heavy, the pop kids love them because they have fantastic melody and are quite danceable if you're willing to try. I have not met a person yet who doesn't adore these guys and they're easily my favorite Brisbane band at the moment. They had some shitty sounding demos kicking around a while back, but it appears they have thrown them out, and should soon be replaced by stuff from their upcoming Demo EP, which is apparently being followed by a concept LP sometime early next year if I heard correctly.

Speaking of bands with an eclectic mix of fans

The Kidney Thieves (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=98405829) are the best live band in any genre in Brisbane right now in my opinion, full stop. They're funky, they're sassy, they have on stage banter down to a fine art, and they're some of the most fantastically talented musicians in Brisbane right now. Their lead guitarist is in about a thousand side projects, which range across almost every genre you'd care to name, and all the ones I've seen are fantastic (Hazards of Swimming Naked, Ghost Town High, Dead Letter Opener, I could make entries about all these bands, but I'll restrain myself), but the Kidney Thieves take the cake. You can dance to them, despite the fact that they adore fucking around with complicated time signatures, which in of itself is an incredible achievement. These guys love performing. The only problem I have with them is that their EP is comprised entirely of their heavier songs, and has a really nu-metal sounding mix, making them sound like some dodgy Incubus clone at times. If you check out the tracks on their myspace, check out the live ones first. Its just fantastic.

Honourable mentions: (I couldn't be fucked writing up all these great bands)

I Heart Hiroshima (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=39345851)
Iron On (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=9918574)
Never (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=85006998)
Arcane (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=17378336)
Yeo (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=34034528)
Neath (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=72161238)

I probably forgot some bands, but these guys are a pretty good mix of some of the stuff I like in my city lately.

Doing a full write-up on each band would be way too time-consuming, so I'll just briefly describe them

Rah Rah (http://www.myspace.com/rahrahband) - pop, alt-country, lovers of Broken Social Scene

Polymaths (http://www.myspace.com/polymaths) - pop made by English majors and Faculty Of Education students who are English majors

Fattony And The Shitheads (http://www.myspace.com/fattonyandtheshitheads) - old-school punk, the sort of band where the lead singer is so hardcore he quit drinking when he was nine

Eroark (http://www.myspace.com/eroark) - jammy pop, sound different at every show (I've gotten vibes of Gang Of Four, Rush, and a Dave-Matthews-free Dave Matthews Band) which is frustrating

Geronimo (http://www.myspace.com/geronimonow) - two former members of defunct Jade Tree act Despistado (http://www.myspace.com/despistado) playing loud, punk-inflected pop-rock

The Hot Blood Bombers (http://www.myspace.com/hotblood) - greasy, sweaty garage rock with all the amp settings cranked to ten (I'm serious, the bassist apologised for it once)

def3 (http://www.myspace.com/def3) - rapper of Chilean descent who obviously likes Atmosphere and Classified, plays with a full Chilean music ensemble and a DJ

Tinsel Trees (http://www.myspace.com/theredstairs) - pretty, slow acoustic tunes

Go Jeff! (http://www.myspace.com/gojeffmusic) - shouty, hyper music reminiscent of early emocore except with a lot more bounciness and major keys and a girl vocalist/bassist

Sylvie (http://www.myspace.com/sylviemusic) - glitchy, sophisticated and often transcendental space-rock with mathy and poppy elements, also with a girl vocalist/bassist, also the guitarist was Despistado's bassist

Goldenmile (http://www.myspace.com/goldenmile) - quirky, light new-wave-ish pop made by a drum/guitar/bass trio and is therefore more fun than most music which would be lumped into the same category.

Generals And Majors (http://www.myspace.com/generalsandmajors) - spacey, po-faced new-wave-ish pop that is quite good but marred by delusions of grandeur

Fight The Monster (http://www.myspace.com/fightthemonster) - mostly folk-punk, produced by stern communists and distributed largely for free via their website, though they are apparently in the middle of recording a metal album which I am thinking will turn out to sound ill-conceived

Daniel (http://www.myspace.com/danielmaslany) - weird experimental lo-fi electronic music

The Sinsters (http://www.myspace.com/thesinsters) - rockabilly of the classic school where the drummer only has a kick and a cymbal and a snare and he stands up to play them and the guitarist has a flat-top and a semi-hollowbody guitar and the bassist plays a standup bass

Bastard Sons Of A Rock'n'Roll Devil (http://www.myspace.com/bastardsonsofarocknrolldevil) - you can probably imagine what these guys play and that leather jackets are involved

The Cathartic Lupins (http://www.myspace.com/thecatharticlupins) - goofy folkish stuff with two Myspaces (http://www.myspace.com/catharticlupins2)

Power Box Social (http://www.myspace.com/powerboxsocial) - four dudes who are a year younger than me playing stoner rock and who I would like to record because their current producer sounds kind of like a disciple of Bob Rock

National Frost (http://www.myspace.com/nationalfrost) - local dream-pop ensemble that makes surprisingly accomplished music

Little Miss Higgins (http://www.myspace.com/littlemisshiggins) - bluesy roots-rock, scored a local stage adapation of Molière's George Dandin

A Knight To Remember (http://www.myspace.com/aknighttoremember) - describe themselves as "folk rock" which is fairly accurate

Bands I'm in:

Health Care (http://www.myspace.com/healthcareband). We don't have any songs up yet but the couple practices we've had are fucking nuts. We were founded by a film artist who has some crazy artistic intentions for the band and also figured out a way to use a television as a vocoder and wishes to utilise this in a cover of "T.V. Eye." Our songs so far include a menacing dance-ish number which involves the chant "We want a pitcher, not a belly-itcher" being growled over a disco bassline, a song I wrote in 7/4 time, a song which started from a carnival-like keyboard line that I put a Shellac-style guitar riff over top of and the bassist howls unhinged lyrics about the circus over and a song in a major key which is rapped over. I can't wait to actually write and perform a full set of this stuff.

Fireflower (http://www.myspace.com/fireflower7) is the more serious project of the dude from The Cathartic Lupins who is also my bass player (see below). I was recently recruited as the drummer. We've practiced once, but Johnny's been writing stuff for it for a while so I'm basically just listening to what he wants and trying to do it.

Muriel (http://www.myspace.com/murielband) is a joke band that I have nevertheless written a song for. One of the local venues, The Exchange, has a series called the "New West Concert Series" in which up-and-coming local artists are given the chance to play in the smaller side of the venue, The Club, without having to pay for rental. The artists also get 100% of the door, plus $100 for playing. This is accomplished by means of a grant. While applying for the grant this year, the venue manager discovered to his dismay that he had to list the acts for 2009 in advance. Keep in mind this is a grant which is supposed to help up-and-coming artists and also that he books bands maybe six months in advance tops. He just made up a bunch of bands and sent them in, then sent my friend an email telling said friend that he was now the frontman of a band named "Muriel." Our first song is called "I'm Okay With Alaska" and I've written it on the banjo. It's actually quite fun.

These Estates (http://www.myspace.com/theseestates) is the name of the project I devote the bulk of my time to and act as the primary writer for. I'm not very good at describing it, but essentially I try to write music that I would listen to myself. We play what I'll lump under the broad umbrella of "pop" because we dabble quite a bit in everything - punk, post-hardcore (I'm serious), southern rock, folk and slowcore (though the song I think of as slowcore probably isn't since it gets quite loud at the end). When playing with These Estates live I tend to sweat a lot.

My other two projects, World's Largest Dinosaur (a solo electronic act) and The Danger Bros. (my garage-punk duo with my brother in which my name is Johnny Danger and his name is Big Li'l Danger), don't have Myspaces because they don't really have anything recorded.

The Bones Royal (http://www.myspace.com/bonesroyal)
What happens when Led Zeppelin and The Mooney Suzuki have a lovechild.
Reckless Sons (http://www.myspace.com/recklesssons)
Catchy, blues-driven rock 'n' roll.
Strangers on the Footpath (http://www.myspace.com/strangersonthefootpath)
Shoegazing meets folk rock all over again (although the music they have up at the moment may not reflect the shoegazing so well).

My friend's black metal band, Staurophobia.  They don't have a website, because they haven't actually recorded anything, they just have a song written that they play at shows.  And they hate myspace.  The one song they do have is 45 minutes long (their goal is to keep adding to it until it hits 2 hours).  They have one member whose sole purpose is to either a) hold up a goats head or b) wave a piece of sheet metal to emulate the sounds of thunder.  And their drummer is hella fast...like...Genghis Tron drum-program fast.

Andrew Parker Renga (http://www.aprmusic.net)

I met this guy tonight after seeing him perform.  He's really cool and a very talented musician.  What he did on stage was use a Boss Looping Station and play to himself and some premade loops, as well as some other effects.  It made for a very entertaining folk/alternative acoustic sound.  He gave me his cd for free.  It's pretty sweet.  If anyone checks him out and decides they like his stuff, I'll try using Sendspace or something to upload it.
