And holy crap if this isn't a huge contender for album of the year. For those unfamiliar with Alcest, they're kind of hard to describe, I guess a good shot would be MBV mixed with some melodic black metal band. Guitars that are heavy but not aggressive- with some totally beautiful clean guitar lines, some dreamy clean vocals a bit low in the mix, lots of beauty and dreaminess and stuff.
While I did mention "melodic black metal" it's hardly metal, so even if you're one of those strange people who only like really twee stuff you may find some stuff here you'll enjoy.

wait...black metal and twee ... that sounds like the worst combination i've ever heard in my life
after listening to the new songs pasted on the myspace i can't say i'm that impressed with it either...it's just boring quite frankly...i still can't pick up the twee in it however....or the black metal for that mater

It sounds pretty good, but I've heard a few of those chord changes too many times for it to be the best album this year. It's still a good album, however! Will investigate a little more into these.
Melodic black metal? Hmm. They sound more like an indie band trying to write Opeth songs to me. In a good way.

I didn't actually say it was a mix with black and twee. I was trying to point out that despite the influence it takes from Black Metal (which is definitely there, listen to the first track) it's actually quite melodic, etc etc.

Yeah, I kind of raved a bit too much when I first heard it. A few more listens later, I now think it's a pretty good record, but not exactly album of the year material.

I got a copy for reviewing and I think it is utterly lovely! at first I was a bit skeptical, this whole french-black-metal-musician-does-shoegaze scenario bothered me a bit. But it is really well done. The album is hardly original, when you are over the whole novelty thing, but quite good. The bm bit is sort of subtle but definitely there, in the whole guitar-blur.

diggin it

Got this a few hours ago and it's been on repeat since, fuckin' beautiful. Any other notable bands doing this whole doom-meets-shoegaze thing?
-
Well this is more 'Black Metal meets pop meets Shoegaze" kind of deal, but other bands you could check out would Jesu (obviously) Nadja, Angelic process and the Goslings. I uploaded some Nadja and Angelic Process in the sendspace thread.

I really need to hear this. :|

Am listening and enjoying but I really don't get the black metal thing -- this is about as far from black metal as I can imagine. It sounds more like an Explosions in the Sky cover band with vocals. Actually closer to Maserati.
