As the title says... Please.
-
Is it meant to be rhetorical?
OHHHH ENTIRE GENRE BURNNNNNN
-
More of a challenge than a rhetorical question, I'd dare say.
FIND A GOOD SKA BAND, I DARE YOU.
-
see if someone did for ska what finntroll did for folk you might have an answer
however i'm yet to hear any kick ass ska-metal songs about trolls so can someone please suggest one of them to me (khar you would know if anyone had done this wouldn't you)
-
I used to listen to a lot of ska. Here are some decent ones:
Catch 22
Streetlight Manifesto
Big D & the Kids Table
the Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Less Than Jake (their older stuff)
The Aquabats
Goldfinger
The Mad Caddies
RX Bandits
I know they're not ska, but some Cursive songs off of The Ugly Organ remind me of ska a little.
Instead of ska, try a band with a ska-ish sound, but are loads better than any of those bands I just listened to: ZOX
-
Not to offend or sound ignorant or anything, but is ska still around in any substantial sense of the word? I remember The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish being all over the radio way back in the mid-'90s, but as far as I know all of that stuff faded into complete obscurity shortly after. I like to at least be aware of the various underground music movements going around (not that I'm any sort of expert) but ska hasn't even remotely entered my radar since it came and went back then.
-
Yeah. It's pretty much dead. One of my friends started a ska band though. It's the only one in the area.
-
Less than Jake's high on the list, but yeah mostly its died out but theres still hardcore fans. Theres quite a few ska bands in my area, but they suck. And yes whole genre burn, it was good.
-
If you can't dance to the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, you are dead inside.
-
My band (http://www.myspace.com/somethinginitself) used to play music that was sortakinda ska-esque, I guess...
-
The Specials?
-
Rocket From the Crypt's Scream, Dracula, Scream!
-
The old stuff from the Suicide Machines
-
Skatalites, man. There used to be a decent local band called skip george, but they broke up years ago.
-
You listen to one Ska song, you've listened to them all.
Its just the same up-picked chords, in the same beat. With a guy trying to hard to sound like Bob Marley.
-
Oh, for pity's (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&searchlink=DESMOND|DEKKER&sql=11:aifuxqq5ldfe~T21) sake (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&searchlink=DESMOND|DEKKER&sql=11:aifuxqq5ldfe~T2), people.
-
Don't forget Sugar Ray.
-
Meal Ticket, Skakin' Pickle (duh), VooDoo Glow Skulls, Slapstick, others mentioned
-
see if someone did for ska what finntroll did for folk
Ruin it?
-
Are we talking ska that came from reggae or ska that came from pop-punk?
-
And are they African Libras or European Libras?
-
uurgh
-
The skatalites are really good. So are The Ethiopians. For more modern stuff, a lot of the bands on Asian Man do a really good classic Ska/Rocksteady thing that is well worth listening to. I like Chris Murray a lot, but really there is a lot of music there that will entertain.
Ska is awesome for listening to at a bonfire on the beach in southern California, which is really all I ask from the genre.
-
Seriously people. Listen to Zox.
-
Sorry if any of the following have been mentioned and i didn't notice, i saw big d (YAY!) was mentioned, as were aquabats and so on, but im brainstorimg:
Reel Big Fish
Operation Ivy
Common Rider
Rancid
Against All Authority
Streetlight Manifesto
Arrogant Sons Of Bitches
Mustard Plug
The Toasters
The Pietasters
Suicide Machines
That's all i can think of right now, hope it helps! I love ska.
-
Save Ferris
Sublime (I'm surprised no one's mentioned them yet!)
Suburban Legends
Cherry Poppin' Daddies
Flip The Switch
The Dance Hall Crashers
The Hippos
Mad Caddies
Lucky Boys Confusion
Mustard Plug
(Early) No Doubt
And a lot of bands considered "crack rock steady" or similar genres remind me of ska, but less cheerful.
Choking Victim
INDK
Leftover Crack
World/Inferno Friendship Society
Morning Glory

Rocket From the Crypt actually were a good band, but from what I remember they're not really all that ska-ish. I mean, I guess that's one influence, but they don't sound like your typical "ska band".
The town I live in has a yearly ska festival. I wish I could say I were kidding.
-

Oh man why do I keep hearing folks say this? It's like, am I crazy? My cleaning lady asked me if I wanted my bed made, and I was all, "yeah, sure." Then she was all, "Do you listen to Rocket From the Crypt?" What the hell?
Just yesterday I went outside to get the mail at noon and just happened to get to my mailbox at the same time as the mailman. I said, "Thanks, man I'll just take that," and he responded, "Huh, a package from Barnes and Noble? I hope it's some Rocket From the Crypt."

I recommended Scream, Dracula, Scream! because it used a lot of brass and was probably better then the rest of the recomendations in this thread.

the slackers. my brother's an enormous ska fanatic, and he's always raving about the slackers.
-
If we're talking about albums that use a lot of horns and stuff like that, Cursive's The Ugly Organ might work. Right?
-
I really, really hate Ska with all my heart but I'm sure early on there were some shining stars.
I'm told The Specials, Toots and the Maytails and The Skatalites were great bands. I'd start there.
I havn't heard any original Skatalites original stuff but Im pretty sure it was they who did a totally kick ass cover of the james bond theme.

No.
-
I've always enjoyed a lively little band called "Dance Hall Crashers"
The female vocals just get to me.

I think most of the bases have been covered by other people, except that I find
Mars Volta ska and Justin Timberlake equally wretched. It's like choosing between somebody sticking a fork in my eye or up my ass. I guess I would have to choose the ass, but it still isn't a preferred outcome.
Did I fly off the handle and say some over the top things?? Yes, but it wasn't meant to be taken seriously. I just don't like Mars Volta ska, and I find the idea of trying to make sense out of their lyrics by reading a book find good ska bands patently ridiculous. It's not like I genuinely think nobody should like or listen to the Mars Volta ska. Hell, when their Reel Big Fish's first second album came out, I was a big fan of it and At The Drive-In ska. I want to say I've 'grown' out of it, but that will start all kinds of more arguments, so I'll just say that I don't like them ska anymore.
Per what bands I think do what Mars Volta ska does better, it's more that they basically try to cram prog rock, latin music, jam bands, kraut rock, and post-hardcore into one band. To be sure, there aren't any bands who do exactly what they do and do it better. On paper that sounds amazing, but I've never found the results to be worthwhile. I'd much rather listen to a band who does one of those things really well than one who does them all below averagely if you're going to listen to ska you might as well go listen to reggae instead because it's superior in every regard.

Haha. That's one of my favorite NN2S panels.

The only really good modern ska band that comes to mind is The Slackers. They're about the only band worth a shit on Hellcat Records.
The Beat were good (The English Beat in the U.S.)
The Specials were great and as such Fun Boy Three was pretty good
Toots and the Maytals are great
-
worth a shit on Hellcat Records.
Fallacious is you

How so? Who else is good on Hellcat. Nobody. And if you like Rocksteady and Ska then The Slackers are an excellent band.
-
Dropkick murphys are on hellcat!

Dropkick murphys are on hellcat!
Yes they are. And they're really kind of mediocre. The Pouges were way better.
-
worth a shit on Hellcat Records.

You misunderstand me. Worth a shit means something positive I think.

After a quick look over of the hellcat roster, I would say Rancid is worth a shit. Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros are definitely worth a shit, but I'm not sure the dead should be included. I would agree that Dropkick has been middle of the road since McColgan left the group.
-
See though, I don't think anyone on Hellcat is worth a shit. The Dropkick Murphys are probably the least offensive.
-
Worth a shit = offensive?
-
Worth a shit= kind of backhanded praise
-
Listen to Streetlight Manifesto. They are the only ska band that matters. I would dare say that their only real album, Everything Went Numb is one of the greatest albums I have ever heard, and I don't even listen to ska. Actually, I despise the genre.

I forgot about Joe Strummer who deserved way better than Hellcat. But no member of Rancid has done anything minimally positive for music since 1995. Have we forgotten Tim Armstrong's recent sins in The Transplants?
-

Actually I like the Slackers. It wasn't meant to be backhanded. I was just saying that nobody else on Hellcat has done anything as good. I was corrected because Joe Strummer and the Messacaleros were a pretty good band.
-
I wasn't addressing you in my last post, I was explaining myself. I'm not arguing with you.
-

Fuck, man. What about The Aggrolites?
-

No, The Slackers and Joe Strummer and the Mesacalleros. I refuse to listen to anything else. I used to be a huge Rancid and Dropkick fan a few years ago but, I've realized everything on Hellcat sounds the same.
-
And, yes, I am comfortable being closed-minded to Hellcat records! They've taken too much of my money for bad music!
-
The aggrolites are odd live. Saw them open for dropkick in march.
-
woah, i don't think i have too many left to say

Cake is in no way shape or form a ska band. Just because you have horns doesn't make you ska.
-
Oh man. You are so not ska with your out-of-date jargon and your crooning about prostitutes. Those things don't make you ska.
-
The Selecter
The Specials
Prince Buster
Toots and the Maytals (ska/soul/reggae)
Fishbone (ska/funk)
Madness

Dance Hall Crashers
Save Ferris
Early No Doubt & Letters To Cleo
(ska core/ska punk↓)
Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Operation Ivy
The Suicide Machines
Mad Caddies
King Prawn
Sublime (not strictly ska but still great)
-
I'm not as huge of a ska guy as I used to be, but I still listen to Reel Big Fish, The Aquabats, and Sublime on a somewhat regular basis.
If you haven't already, look into those guys.
