Title: Video Game Music Videos
Post by: Blyss on 05 Jul 2007, 12:18
I searched, and so no existing thread so here goes:

Okay, so I've been playing around on Youtube - and I've come across music videos that people have created using videogame cutscenes, gameplay, etc...

Two of note that are exceptionally good are:

&

They both impressed the hell out of me.

MTV 2 had a nice show that did this, with characters from games like Bloodrayne and the Sims

I remember watching those - but these impress me more I guess, especially the RE4 one.  There's no manipulating the code on that one.  It's strictly using existing video and making it fit the song.  That really impresses me.

I saw one a while back (sorry, no link) which used FMV sequences from Final Fantasy VIII and IX to go over Iced Earth's song, Dark Saga
This video got me into the band, and I now love that song
Try searching for it yourself if you wish

The Resident Evil one was wholly unimpressive, basically taking cinema sequences and blending them to fit the beat of the song, hardly difficult with the plethora cinema sequences littered throughout the game.

The Half-Life 2 version seems to have been a lot more challenging, technically, to create. Dollars to donuts the guy used GMod, but even with it, animating G-Man's mouth to sync with the music would have been an absolute ass. That aside, the scenery clips were probably pretty easy to accomplish, with or without Garry's Mod assisting.

This ain't the music forum, so I won't get into it, but, seriously... Breaking Benjamin and Linkin Park? CAN WE OFFER NO BETTER TO THE GODS OF GAMING?

Oooooookay.

Your point is valid on the difficulty of manipulating code - and yes, it probably would have been harder to do than piecing together the linkin park video - still, something about the breaking the habit video still impresses me more, because the code can't be manipulated or changed.  I guess I just view it differently than you do, but that's okay.

As for breaking benjamin and linkin park - nothing wrong with either artist, as far as I can tell.

Meh, whatever.

I suppose I'm too technical to enjoy a simple video anymore. :P

I wasn't trying to contradict you, or state that your opinion was wrong, and I apologize if I came across that way. I was merely trying to compare the two in a plane I can understand, as opposed to personal preference or style, since we all know people vary in their opinions.

The music is, of course, another personal thing, but I was just trying to express my sentiment that I have yet to see a video game-based music video that had music I actually liked. To each his or her own.

The Stacey's mom one was pretty funny, mainly because of the random flailing/rocking out scenes.

Not technically music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvmU2IUH-bk) but it is awesome anyway.
