Title: Live Earth
Post by: philosopherqueen on 07 Jul 2007, 17:07
I have never posted in the music section before for fear of being chewed up and spit out but I was just wondering if anyone went to this and what you guys all thought of the performances so far.

that new Wembley Stadium is incredible.

2,618 toilets.

Also, cool (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nunatak_%28band%29)

Also, cool

It made me so happy to read about them.

Also, I can't help but wondering. How much pollution does something like Live Earth create? The electricity that gets pumped into concerts of that scale is immense. The trash that people leave behind at something like that.

I didn't hear about this at all before I accidentally came across it on TV as it was starting. I watched all three hours.

Huh, StaedlerMars, since it is called Live Earth, it may be a green event. Green events are when they buy enough RECs (renewable energy certificates) to offset the fossil fuel energy that they use. Since all electricity goes into a grid (think of tons of taps pouring water into one tub), you can't actually guarantee that you're using green energy. But by buying RECs, they are supporting green energy and allowing for more of it to be produced, since it is more expensive than energy from oil.

Ooh, look, I was right!

Renewable energy credits are the same thing as renewable energy certificates. Hooray!
(Guess where I am working this summer?)

I went to the Sydney show.  It was about what you'd expect from a benefit concert thinger.  Lots of bands each playing 30 min sets.  The last couple of bands played 45 mins each.  In between bands they played big videos on renewable energy and how you can support greener fuels/power sources, etc.  As Ally said, they did something with RECs and also made a deal with the local public transport agencies to offer free public transport to the show in order to encourage less people to drive.  Seems like it worked pretty well, because out of the 48k people in attendance the majority of them came by public transport or walked.  It seemed like a pretty well-organised event.

I didn't see much of it. I mean, it's got nothing on Live 8. I heard little to nothing about it until it was on TV.

Did anyone see how many people Spinal Tap had playing bass for them for Big Bottom?

My god.

As far as the Tap's sexual euphemisms, I've always preferred from Sex Farm, 'working on a sex farm/bothering your livestock.' I've used that one frequently.

I dunno, maybe it's not "classic" Spinal Tap, but my favourite song is probably "The Majesty of Rock". I mean,

Quote
The more it stays the same, the less it changes
And that's the majesty of rock
The mystery of roll

Come on!

. . . Sorry, Live what?

My favourite 'Tap tune is probably 'Christmas with the Devil'

NO BELLS IN HELL!
NO SNOW BELOW!

Yeah, I researched it after I posted it (probably should have worked it the other way around). I've always thought it was a good idea, the whole thing was just nagging me.

They also only used bands that were already touring in the area, so that they didn't have to jet them around the world.

I didn't see much of it, and i didn't see any of the performers i wanted to.  I do remember that K.T. Tunstall had some horrific gold pants on and the dude from Linkin Park sounded terrible.  I was kinda disappointed it didn't get as much air time as Live 8 did, it took me a while to find the two channels it was on in my area.

Here in Canuckistan CTV aired all 28 hours (or however long it was) jumping from city to city. And we had a network airing each of the concerts in their entirety. If I recall MuchMusic aired 2 of the cities, MuchMoreMusic aired all of London, MuchVibe had one... etc. I plan on searching for the performances I really wanted to see and downloading them now that it's all said and done.

Edit: I just watched the Roger Waters' performance and I don't know what Cartilage Head was talking about. His guitarist was awesome.

the dude from Linkin Park sounded terrible.

Do I even need to say "doesn't he always"??

When I first saw this thread, I thought it was going to be about going to see the band Earth.

True, but it he was noticeably terrible-er.  Sure its live and all but at least sound remotely like your recorded self.

I didn't even know anything about it frankly. I'll say one thing though, that new Wembley Stadium is incredible.

I watched Live Earth on TV. Most of the music wasn't really to my taste but they have to have a rather large range I suppose, keep everyone happy.

Wembley is awesome, saw Metallica there on Sunday, sweet stadium.

Madonna and parts of Gogol Bordello played a song together

I submit Eugene Hutz and Madonna dancing as being the most surreal image of the decade.

I saw it happen, it was in fact the only part of the entire event that I did see. What was more surreal was that I'd only heard of Gogol Bordello literally 10 minutes before I started watching, after reading an unrelated article about them in Plan B. I'd assumed they were obscure, man was I pissed.
In addition, I don't care for her music that much, but Madonna is a fucking incredible performer, so much complicated dancing while singing. It was really impressive.

Their set was mostly pre-Black album with about 4 or 5 exceptions. I thought they might play 'The New Song' or 'The Other New Song' like they did on tour last year but I can't complain with the set, it was awesome.

Back to Live Earth the funniest moment was seeing Dave Grohl's kid with huge ear protectors on at the side of the stage.

EDIT: God damit when did I hit 500 posts. I wanted to do something special with that. :(

The have something like this in Vermont, but it's a little more than just the green energy thing.  It's mostly a music festival.  It's called Solarfest.  I'm going with a bunch of friends.

Info about Solarfest (http://www.solarfest.org/index.php)

One of my friend's mothers helps organize it.  I'm going to do some volunteer work so I can get free stuff, plus I like helping out.

Where does all the money from Live Earth go?

Please tell me the answer isn't "the performers."
Title: Re: Live Earth
Post by: amok on 10 Jul 2007, 13:23
The money from Live Earth is used to pay rent to the Earth from living on it. If we don't do charity concerts every so often to satiate the Earth's greed, we get evicted and shot into space.
