As a huge Wes Anderson fan I felt obligated to post this
http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox_searchlight/thedarjeelinglimited/trailerb/
Needless to say I'm really excited for this. Wes Anderson is a really brilliant film maker with a heck of a lot of style and a penchant for hilarious, absurd characters and great dialog. Even the oft derided Life Aquatic is great in my opinion. Anyway, Darjeeling Limited is probably the film release I'm looking forward to most. Anyone else looking forward to it? Anyone hate Anderson and/or love him?
-
Absolutely love Wes Anderson's films, though I did think The Life Aquatic was a dip in form it was still better than most other things. The trailer for this looks great; more Rushmorey and slightly less obviously stylised storytelling (well, you know, relatively) than Aquatic or even Tennenbaums (my personal favourite) with, again, a brilliant cast. And is it just me, or wouldn't it be fantastic to spend a day in a Wes Anderson film? It's just the way everyone talks....it's not even your classic movie "real-life but smarter/wittier", it's a whole other thing besides.
Also, has anyone seen Bottle Rocket, Anderson's debut film? I've heard lots of great things about it, but never seen it availible on DVD.
-
Here's Bottle Rocket on DVD: http://www.amazon.com/Bottle-Rocket-Luke-Wilson/dp/0767821408/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-2079934-4030206?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1185316523&sr=8-1
It's a great movie. I think most would disagree with me but I think it's Anderson's worst movie. Or maybe a bit better than Life Aquatic. I haven't seen BR in years so I'm not sure if I'm one to judge. It's worth buying and seeing though because it's still excellent.
-
This looks excellent.
I think that Rushmore is hands down his worst, and nearly unwatchable. Everything else he has done has been fantastic.
-
I couldn't find Bottle Rocket today at Blockbuster and was too flustered to ask! I love the Life Aquatic, though, it is one of my two favorite movies. I'm a big Wes Anderson fan in general. This looks amazing.
Owen Wilson is my second favorite Owen.
I really want to bone him.
-
I think Bottle Rocket is his best film. It's easily my favourite. It's the only one I can watch on repeat and never stop paying attention, even for a second.
Y'know what else? It's readily available on ALL GOOD TORRENT SITES. Search on torrentz.com, you could download it in a few hours.
-
I feel bad for video rental stores, though.
-

You are so wrong that I just spit blood.
-
I have only ever seen The Royal Tennenbaums, but I must say I loved it, keep meaning to check out his other films, this might just be the inspiration I need...

This. Only with some added stomach bile.

Seconded without a doubt. How in god's name can you say that???
-
I can't say that I'm sorry, it's just horrid.
-
But...but...how? I mean sure, you can dislike a film and everything ("That's just, like, your opinion man"), but "horrid"? I'm just curious what you find so repugnant about it.
-
i wonder if this is going to have to be owen wilson's post-mortem releaseg
-
I can't say that I'm sorry, it's just horrid.
Loved Rushmore, Life Aquatic, and Royal Tenenbaums. Found Bottle Rocket to be boring.
Come on Dan. You're eloquent. Spit it out. Were you jealous of the young man's genius?
-
No, Bottle Rocket's pretty great too.
"WHY AREN'T YOU OPENING THE SAFE?"
"I took a break."
-
There all great... if you didn't like a wes anderson film it was because you were in the wrong mood or something- i mean, it could hardly be his fault?
I think Royal Tennenbaums is at the top of the pile for me, i saw it at the movies when i was like 10 or 11 and still managed to love it. With each subsequant viewing i've got more and more out of it and enjoyed it more each time. Just a really layered, hillarious, heartfelt film.
I loved Bottle Rocket when i saw it three or four years ago but would really need to watch it again. And I really don't get why everyone disliked the Life Aquatic- I thought it was an absolute riot.
-
Cate Blanchett. People hate it because it has Cate Blanchett.
The rest of the cast was pretty much perfect, and some of the scenes are the best scenes from any Wes Anderson movie.
From the moment pirates attack his boat you know that the movie is worth having to see Cate Blanchett on the screen.
Is it his weakest film? Yeah, it had at least one really annoying character that was dragging the movie down. Was it bad? No way, it was good. I really liked it.
-
What's the matter with Cate Blanchett?

Whoo for dramedies!
-
I'm going to see this tonight with my roommates. We're dressing in fancy clothes, going to a fancy dinner, and having a fancy Wes Anderson evening at the movies!
-

Bottle Rocket might just be my favorite film ever. I got my DVD copy from Amazon for like $6, check there.
-
I am outraged because there are only TWO theaters in the entire Washington, DC metro area that are showing it. The theater near my house has had a "coming soon" poster up since June or July, and now they aren't even showing it. What a cruel tease.
-
I'm not able to see this without taking a trip somewhere. Anyone got any suggestions where to go to see it? Extra bed? Floorspace? Hell, I'll take an open dumpster if I have to...
-
I've only seen a few commercials for it, but it looks promising. I might see it if I get the chance.
-

Except they just (finally) released it as part of the Criterion Collection, so the new DVD is lush with features.
EDIT: I didn't check my sources and apparently they're just working on it (http://www.cinematical.com/2007/10/01/bottle-rocket-finally-gets-its-criterion-dvd/).
-
I'm going to be in NYC tomorrow anyway to see the Sigur Ros premier so I guess I'll probably go in early and see this at one of those exorbitantly overpriced time square movie theaters since they're not showing it anywhere near me. Fuckers.

there is a very dissappointing review posted on this page.
-
I never put much stock in user submitted IMDb reviews.....or any reviews for that matter. I always wait to see a movie before passing judgment so if I kinda want to see something I don't let bad reviews dissuade me.
-
Yeah the theater by my place is't showing it either. Never expected that in Boston.
-
I finally saw it, but unfortunately, about 4 drunken frat boys sat behind me (in the back row) and screamed (to their one friend in the front row) almost the entire time. I wanted to bust a cap.
-
I really want to see this, but I guarantee it will not come to Fargo anytime soon. There's a slight possibility that the Fargo Theater might get it, I suppose, since they usually show some of the big-name limited release shows, but I won't hold my breath.
-
I am actually starting to warm up to this movie and now really want to see it. I haven't really though to much about it because I have only seen The Life Aquatic and bits and pieces of The Royal Tenenbaums.
-
This movie is amazing. You must go see it. Twice.
I did.
Disclaimer: The writer of this post loves Wes Anderson and thinks everything he touches turns to gold. Take opinion for true at your own risk.

i saw it last night. i really really REALLY wanted to like it, but i was kind of disappointed... no, more than kind of the more i think about it. i'm a big wes anderson fan, and as always, this was beautifully shot, but this one was almost... TOO wes anderson, if that makes sense... lots of "meaningful pauses" very self aware, "quirky" dialogue, and any sort of symbolism was incredibly heavy-handed.
he was so worried about being artsy that he forgot to tell his story. i didn't get a good enough feeling for any of the characters, and didn't really care about them at all. and to top it all off, it wasn't very funny. there were a few parts i laughed at, but even then, they felt sort of forced... i wanted them to be funnier than they were.
he's a good director, and has made some great films... some of my favorites. but he's become such an "indie legend" that he has just ended up jacking-off to the idea of how cool he is. there was a time when indie simply meant free from corporate sponsorship and control. now it's an asthetic that is over-produced, and marketed, by large record labels, distribution companies, clothing stores, etc. as a friend of mine said today, indie is "finally eating itself in sofia coppola decadence."
this filmdrunk article made me laugh: http://filmdrunk.com/post.phtml?pk=266
-
indie is "finally eating itself in sofia coppola decadence."
What does that even mean?
-
i dunno... just thought it sounded amusing.
she's a watermark for pretentious indie movies. lots of indie movies are turning to her 'starefest with the camera' technique (lost in translation, for example). now it's used so much, its become irrelevant to anything.
-
I loved The Virgin Suicides, I don't know about you.
-
indie is "finally eating itself in sofia coppola decadence."
That quote is amazing. Based on that quote, I've decided to drink a few cans of the Sofia sparkling wine and go see the film. Whoever found that or posted that or whatever, that was amazing. A pink can of sparkling wine made by Sofia Coppola? Can life get and more beautiful? You would understand if you were into the whole fashionista irony sort of thing.

i wish i was either a child psychiatrist or had two brothers so i could get the most out of it...

Oh. My. God.
It's coming to Fargo starting tomorrow and I AM SO EXCITED!!
-
Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson (http://www.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=20862626) interview each other. I guess the reason their movies have such a particular dialogue style is because that's actually how they talk! Hilarious.
-
Saw the film last night. I thought it was superb. The pre-movue short was good too. Mind you, this and The Life Aquatic do not have the quality of his first three masterpeices, but they are still wonderfully quirky, compassionate and original. The dialogue puts some people off, but I feel it adds to the insecurities of the characaters and the quasi-realistic framework in which his movies take place. Heh, and the best part was definately the scene where they get kicked off the train. " I love you too, but I'm gonna mace you in the face!"
"
-
I think that the high point of that entire movie was the single shot of Adrien Brody running after the train in slow motion while "This Time Tomorrow" plays.
That is not to say that I didn't love the rest of the movie (I saw it twice), but it is just the perfect shot in that movie.
Kind of like the shot of Margot getting off the bus to meet Richie in the Royal Tenenbaums. Its a perfect moment.
Also, I thought that, while the movie was great, that the short film prequel, The Hotel Chevalier, was fdsgdsPERFECT.
-
This movie is so good.
-
Yes it is Johnny, yes it is.
-
It's so interesting to watch Anderson's studied, organized Western aesthetic collide with the colourful chaos of India. The resulting film makes it look like everyone involved had fun with it.
Though I must say, Hotel Chevalier greatly outstrips the film.
-
I shouldn't be posting in here because I haven't seen the film yet, and spoilers are probably abounds, but I can't help thinking that fans of Anderson are constantly displeased with his shifting styles. Is Hotel Chevalier a good introduction to what the movie will be like?
Is it really better then the movie?
-
More or less. I think the movie had more subtle humor to go with it, though. The big thing to me is that Hotel Chevalier is actually a pretty essential part to the plot of the rest of the movie.
Is it better than the movie? Yes and no, I think it could really just depend on the mood you're in while watching the short and the film, like it could go back and forth each time you view it.
-
Hotel Chevalier is a Wes Anderson film condensed. It's as funny, as poignant, as tragic, as beautiful and as thoughtful as his best feature-length work, but presented within a much shorter timespan and a much tighter focus - it's a very lean work.
