I just saw this: http://pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/44624-now-thats-what-i-call-indie-comp-revealed and am not at all sure what to think. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Do you see this becoming a trend like the other NOW! series? Ideas?
-
Eh, there's always an underground, independent music scene. It just has to change its name once in a while when its title gets stolen. I'm not worried, because I'll still be able to find good music made by people with relative artistic integrity, right here, through this forum and other places.
I just won't call it "indie".
-
I have heard of all of those bands/have their albums and I am in no way an indie kid. Is this compilation meant to be for indie kids or for people who are curious abut this "indie thing" and want a sample of it?
-

I don't see why not. It's not as if those bands aren't popular, and there's plenty more potential acts out there to pad out CDs like this. I'm just surprised they haven't surfaced before.
-
Oh man, I remember when I was fifteen I bought a compilation called "Indie hits" and it had Muse on it and it was awesome and the best day of my life.
-
Guys I got all these different kinds of bullets for my glock it's cool 'cause they all do different shit.
-
It would be nice if a person who bought a copy frequented Pandora. Then all that good music could spread, and there are certainly a bunch of good bands on that list. I say this because I don't expect an "indie" listener to go out and buy a copy of NOW!, and that it's more for those who are curious.
-
Vice records? I thought they'd start doing some good after they signed the Black Lips.
But yeah, probably bullshit.
-
If they make 20+ compilations, I think it would be safe to shoot them. I don't think the world needs anymore NOW cds.
-
Hilarious that they're releasing a compilation of 'indie' tracks when originally indie was supposed to mean non-major-label.
-
whoa boy, you sure are clever.

This is a collection of very few bands I like, and mostly bands that I dislike. Which sucks, because I would actually be interested in listening to something like this, if it were a few bands I liked and a few I had never heard of.
-
It looked to me like that picture, the words "That's What I Call Indie!" had been added in. Maybe it's just me. Or they're trying to be funny.

Booorrriinnnnnggg.

I can't see the patches to tell if it's my old Troop or not, but I think I know the kid with Down's Syndrome.

Anything touched by NOW will be immediately uncool to indie fans.
I'm not sure whether I'm for or against this. On one hand it would introduced closed minded listeners to the sort of music we listen to. On the other hand it would ruin a lot of our favorite bands for us.
-
The sort of music we listen to? Our favourite bands?
Who is this 'we' you're referring to?
-
"ruin"? It some how devalues the music and makes it less enjoyable?
-
It could turn the stomachs of many hipster snobs, even without them listening. They just have to recognize the "NOW" on the cover and done.

did you read the article?
This Is NEXT series-- essentially the Now! That's What I Call Indie compilation
it isn't actually a NOW! collection. pitchfork is using what they call sarcasm.
-

Yes, because all we indie listeners are as disingenuous as all that. Fuck along, now.

Don't get so hostile, geeze man. Lotus must be new here, and does not yet understand the complicated relationship our forums have with the world of music. In due time, all will become clear.
-
I suppose. I'm just shortening the process. I really just wanted to say "fuck along, now."

Whuh? Bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeargh.
-
I'm not very happy about that little surprise at the end, there...

This wreaks of irony and I love it. Thank you corporate music world. Surely they're doing this on purpose to draw out some laughs, just like a bully who says mean things to illicit reaction on the playground. There's no way this can be serious. It's just too goddamn ironic to be true.
