While looking at something else on youtube, I found this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvTAt20eedU&mode=related&search=
The song was an odd remix of Kanye West singing over "Stronger Better Faster Harder." There was a point in the middle of the video which startled me, where it makes a pretty direct homage to the old anime movie Akira.
I guess I'm just interested what people's opinions of this song/video are: interesting mashup of anime and rap, or just an incoherent pile of pop culture stuff?
-
I haven't watched the video but by the title of the youtube page it looks like it aint no remix. It's a track off Kanye's new (upcoming?) album. Are you sure it's an Akira reference or a reference to Interstella 5555, essentially an anime that was made using Daft Punk's Discovery album as the soundtrack.
For the record, I pretty much love that track.
-
Definitely an Akira reference. In the video, they recreate the scene of Tetsuo coming out of his hospital room and wasting a squad of gasmask-wearing soldiers. It's not the only Akira reference, it's just the first where I made the connection. The entire video is a pretty clear homage to Akira really; the motorcycles leave light trails just like Akira, the medical machinery looks just like in Akira, etc. I have both Akira and Interstella on DVD, trust me it's pretty clear.
What are you doing in this part of the forum, Joe Hocking?!
What is this?!
I felt like discussing this, but if I posted to I Like Fish it would just be moved here anyway.

That's one of the tracks on his album Graduation. I love the energy in it; good music to accompany you in a run. I'm surprised the sample wasn't tweaked more, but that isn't a problem or anything. This song has been getting a crazy amount of air time on the radio.
-
This could have been really good, his voice works with the track, but his lyrics are so weak the whole thing's shot to shit.

Those have blinders! Amazing!

I'm not sure it's wise to have something with the word "blind" in it anywhere near your eyes.

you're absolutely right.
I could probably sing this song with my ears closed, I've heard it so much.
This one and the one with Lupe Fiasco, Pharrell and Thom Yorke: http://youtube.com/watch?v=FfrMia_jAPM
I've been hearing a lot of them. I dig them both.

I don't really know what I think about this. On paper it sounds like a terrible idea (don't get me wrong, I highly enjoy Daft Punk and Kanye. It just doesn't sound like it would go together.) but in practice it's actually pretty awesome.

My thoughts exactly.

I want Kanye's shades.
-
To be honest, I really couldn't get into this remix. I enjoy Daft Punk, and I can enjoy Kanye West (even if I think he's an asshole), but Daft Punk was just not meant to be mashed up with rap. It sounded like daft Punk was more of just a beat in the background for Kanye to rap to, they just didn't seem to fuse into a coherent whole to me.
In other words, I hated this song. But I'm not a big fan of these kinds of mixes in the first place.

the motorcycles leave light trails
The motorcycles in Tron did have motorcycles who leave light trails too, except that it was not the same motorcycles and it was not the same kind of light trails...
I'm gonna shut up now...
-
"Near the middle"? There's AKIRA references all over this video.

I heard this song on the radio a couple of days ago, and thought,
"damn, that's cool." My brother told me it was Daft Punk being sampled, which I had never listened to before. I'm not big on dance music. However, "Stronger" piqued my interest, so I bought a copy of "Homework," and listened to the entire thing from beginning to end.
DAMN that's cool stuff! I'm gonna buy "Discovery" and "Human After All" as soon as I can find them used. (I'm a cheap bastard.)
So yes, it is true that Kanye West is the biggest sample-whore since Sean "Puff Daddy/Puffy/P-Diddy/Diddy" (You know what, his momma call him Sean, I'm-a call him Sean) Combs, but "Stronger" got me hooked on Daft Punk, so more power to him. Thank you Kanye!
-
The music video he did was ENTIRELY based off of Akira. He sampled Daft Punk for the song, but the movie that Daft Punk did the movie to was Interstella 5555 which is completely different from the music video.

wiki says the robot guys working on Kanye are the two from Daft Punk
I hate this song

WELL DAFT PUNK IS PLAYING AT MY...
And THIS everyone, is why you should not play too much Burnout: Revenge. Protip: the series title is NOT a recommendation for how long one should play the game until.
-
I hate Kanye but yeah that in no way isn't an akira reference.
-
I was wondering how long it would be until someone referenced LCD Soundsystem.
...
But my cross country team made "Stronger" the team's favorite song.
That and, the "OH MY GOD" song from the Legally Blonde musical.
I want to kill something.
-
I really like this song!
I dont like the lyrics though..
Something about klondikes and dykes?
-
heard she'd do anything for a klondike
well i'd do anything for a blonde dyke
-
Would be a savage song if the lyrics to Stronger wern't being repeated over and over in slowed down fashion, i like the rest of the song though.
Pumping track.

I prefer Kanye over most rap, but that said, I wont go out of my way to listen to him, I can just put up with him without discomfort.
This song did push me to getting around to buying a replacement copy of "Discovery" for the one Id lost somewhere a few years ago. Had it damn near on loop since then 8-)
