My brother, and I dont know how and something tells me I dont wanna know, got his hands on an authentic '83 Moderne. Serial number checks out and everything. I know this isnt the best place to get an appraisel, but im wondering how much the beauty is worth. Any of you guys have an idea?

Pics, man. Pics.

Actually, I've heard of instances where it's been sold for 4k, and others where it's been sold for $400. So, the appraisal is up the collector that wants it. I have a feeling that you would need to barter with someone over it.
Have fun with that.

a short bit of googling finds prices from 450 to 2600.
probably depends on condition and the serial number.

I'm just going to say. That because it is possibly one of the ugliest guitars ever made. If you can get $4000 for it, I would sell it. Or I might be in such shock that I had one that I couldn't. The choice is yours!

When it comes to old-but-not-vintage Gibsons, much of the value seems to come down to condition. If it hasn't had any major hardware changes or damage done (repaired or otherwise) it is probably worth a decent amount. Check the Kelly Blue Book, that should give you a good baseline to work with.

go to the Antiques Roadshow next time they're around.

Y'mean one of these things?

I've actually seen one or two in person before. Those Gibson guys must've had a weird sense of humor back then, that's all I'm gonna say.

the look of it screams "80s" and that is when it was made. Back when keytars were cool, too.

It was originally designed in the 1950's, along with the explorer and flying V.
Regardless of how damn ugly it is, these things are really rare, so you should be able to get a pretty decent price for it. Some collectors would be willing to pay a lot for this, I'd imagine.

So... keytars aren't cool anymore?

Keytars will always bee cool. ALWAYS!

1983 isn't original, try 1958.
i played the real deal at a guitar show in 1987 (back when they'd still let you do that without a credit check and a gun to your head) and was completely underwhelmed.
but then i don't like Explorers or Flying Vs either. ;)
