Title: Last show...
Post by: ComfortEagle on 08 Aug 2007, 22:39
Whats the last show you've gone to?

Mine was The Paper Chase with Bark Bark Bark, and Great Tyrant. Bark Bark Bark was interesting, but what else  can you say about a band that has their own applause track?
Great tyrant was more than interesting, but some what hard to swallow sometimes, and The Paper Chase was amazing, and one of the few reasons i am glad I live in the underbelly of the world, Texas.

For as cheesey as that is, it's pure genius.

Ugh, The Paper Chase are awful, especially live. I can't stand the instrumentation, the lyrics, or the singer. His stage presence is intensely irritating. On topic, the last show I saw was Man Man with Deerhunter and O'Death opening in Philly. All three acts were amazing and very different. O'Death was cool crazy countryish rock with busted up cymbals, chains, tin cans, and all sorts of cool yelping and fiddling and banjoing. Deehunter was immensely frightening to watch but very powerful and cool nonetheless. Man Man was insanely intense. Great music, amazing musicians, and a crowd which almost killed me, not to mention my rather petite girlfriend. I had to spend the whole set trying to not get swept under the seething mosh or loose hold of my gf, who, I'm convinced, would have been crushed had she been left on her own. Great music, but I still have fading blisters from it.

I think it might have been the Islands show I got into for free. I'm not really sure. Either that, or some sort of local show.

Built to Spill in Milwaukee.  Other than the fact the levels were so off you couldn't hear Doug Martsch for the first half and the bass player playing the wrong chord progression during Carry the Zero, it was a pretty good show.

The last show I went to that didn't include a local band was Modest Mouse with Man Man and Love as Laughter.

I did not care much for Love as Laughter as I thought all of their songs sounded the same.

Man Man was awesome and I especially appreciate the fact that they are one of the few bands I can think of that is experimenting with live stage setup with positive results.

Modest Mouse acted like they could have cared less about the crowd and were playing to an imaginary wall constructed between us and the stage. Not to mention that the crowd itself was awful, full of drunken frat boys and their girlfriends who were only interested in hearing Float On and Dashboard. I was in the front row with six or seven friends to start but after being groped, pushed and shoved non-stop for the first three songs I ended up watching from the balcony, which I found my way up to after asking one of the concession-stand men for directions and he very creepily tried to hit on me even though he was about forty and I am twenty and actually look more like I am sixteen.

I basically wasted forty bucks that night when I would have been better off just sitting at home listening to the albums. At least I got to see Man Man.

We are not here to bash bands, unless you are talking about them in a recent, or slightly not so recent show you've been to.
But then again, every one is entitled to their opinion, this is a forum.

Oh, but I am talking about seeing them recently. They opened for EitS a few months back and it was easily one of the more unpleasant live music experience of my life. They were being heckled from the crowd and the lead singer, who looked like some too pale hipster, kept strutting about in a pose which reminded me of someone attempting to impersonate a chicken and failing miserably. On top of that, I don't care for his voice, the instrumentals are jarring and not at all in sync with the lyrics, and the lyrics themselves are just plain bad. I didn't really like their records but seeing them live not too long ago made me like them less.

I saw a bunch of local punk bands at a skatepark.  My girlfriend is a belly dancer and slightly psychotic, so she had all her stuff on.  And I think this guy with a camera, who was a merch guy for one of the bands was filming her ass.  I was not very pleased.

Before that, I saw The Wards.  Which is a bunch of fourty year old dudes playing old school punk.  I went with a bunch of my friends, who are crazy hippies and punks.  It rocked so hard.

Even further back, I saw Brand New, Anathallo, and the Colour Revolt at Higher Ground with a bunch of friends and my girlfriend.  It was an amazing show, but the crowd sucked beyond comprehension.

the last show I saw was Modest Mouse/Band Of Horses/Love and Laugher. The ladyfriend and I left late and then got lost on the interstate because we're so cool like that, so we missed Love And Laughter, which is okay because I heard they sucked. Then we stood around and waited through Band of Horses set. Now, I've seen Band of Horses twice now, and they've both been radically different performances. They both have one thing in common though. They're pretty dreadfully boring. The first time I saw them was with Iron and Wine (man, I am talking about boring bands and an Iron and Wine concert, oh the hypocrisy), and they were tired and sweaty and sleepy from touring in a shitty van I presume. Then they released and album and pitchfork gave them the pitchfork version of the Rolling-Stone-Give-Every-Album-a-3-And-A-Half-Stars review of like 6 or 7 I think and they actually made some money. So this time the frontman grew out a beard and got voraciously drunk before the show so he was just slurring words together. And they were much louder.

This didn't make them any more interesting.

Modest Mouse were okay despite not A) playing Teeth Like God's Shoeshine or B) being voraciously drunk (Band of Horses frontman should have shared). Whoever posted about them basically building a wall between themselves and the audience hit it pretty spot on. They were in an entirely different world and we were just looking in. It was the Modest Mouse snowglobe hour.

Also it was an outdoor venue so it's like 100 degrees and everyone was smoking and the sound quality sucked and I tried to pick fights with people but nobody took me on.

The next show I'm going to is Qui (WITH DAVID YOW). It will be the shit

Flogging molly and bad religion before we left. I got kicked and stomped during fm, but it was still great. A bakerless bad religion threw down a fast paced set of mostly pre-2000 songs. Loved it.

I saw Man Man earlier this year both at a small venue here in Buffalo & with Modest Mouse.  I encourage everyone to ge see them- one of those bands that you must see live to truly appreciate.  The last concert I went to was the Besnard Lakes show last weekend, & wednesday I'll be going to see This Will Destroy You with Portugal. Last show was Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Webster Hall.  They had one of the worst openers I've ever seen -- two little girls about 12 years old screeching attempts at punk songs with a hairy looking dude on drums.  I mean, I see crappy openers all the time but this was the first one I ever thought was morally wrong.  Then Karen and Nick and co. come on  and Karen is wearing a spangly cape with a spangly hat over a gypsy/dominatrix/superhero outfit and they just kick nine kinds of ass finishing up with one of the best renditions of Tick I've ever heard them play.  Karen was grinning like an idiot the whole time and her enthusiasm was infectious -- she seemed genuinely elated to be playing NYC.

The show before that was Amanda Palmer at Mercury Lounge, and all I'm going to say about that was she played a toy ukelele in the encore while the dude who she is clearly sleeping with who fronted the opener (Aberdeen City) did soto voce lyrics to "Creep", and the crowd was practically in tears.

The last show I saw was a local rap group called Wax Philosophic. I don't particularly like rap, and most of the local bands around here are total shit....but it was one of the most fun shows I've ever been to. I went with the intention to drink cheap beer and mock my fellow citizens but instead it was a dancing frenzy of AMAZING.

Before that, it was Miracle Fortress. They are very good (Polaris-nominated good, if that means anything), and amusing enough live. The singer likes to muffle his vocals slightly so there was a stripey black/white sock over the main mikestand. Kind of wtf, but endearing.

Minus the Bear with Chin Up, Chin Up opening. I loved it.

Before that was Hellogoodbye. Might have been a good show, but I spent the whole time trying to stay on my feet as the crowd was full of pushy twelve year-olds. Therefore I basically missed the whole thing. $25 down the drain...

I saw Birthday Suits, Screamin' Cyn Cyn, and Empty Orchestra with a local Final Fight. Birthday Suits were all insane on stage jumping around screaming engrish and Screamin' Cyn Cyn had a fat lead singer with really tight tights, suspenders, and sparkly makeup (nothing else) on... so an entertaining live show. The music was pretty okay. It was dollar taps night, and that is why I went.

My last show was Malajube in acoustic, with Avec pas d'Casques in opening.

The opening was crappy, it was a lot like a country band, and the bassist looked bored.
The Malajube set was great, some songs were really different, it was magical.
And they said that the video of the show (the show was filmed) will be on the internet in September.

I saw Dylan a couple years ago with Willie Nelson.  It was good but, you should expect somthing totally different than his records.  His band is a kind of roots-rock thing.  It's really cool but, you have to really pay attention seeing as most of the songs seem almost completely rewritten.

Last live show i went to was The Twilight Sad....local band played called Kartta who are the business, Broken Social Scene-esque, but a bit poppier in places and a bit punkier in others. Twilight Sad were STUNNING.

I'm off to Connect Festival at the end of the month to see Beastie Boys, Rilo Kiley, Modest Mouse, Bat For Lashes, MOGWAI AND BJORK.

So this was last night. Really great show- but yes you are very right. Most of the songs sounded NOTHING like one would expect, though i managed to pick most of them. He's a restless artist, and you can understand why he wants to play arround with Like A Rolling Stone after playing it for over 40 years. His band was really really damn fine. They played for 2 hours but it really just felt like 20 minutes. They got a well deserved standing ovation at the end and it was a really satisfying night. The Frames opened for him, they were quite boring, and i've already forgotten what they even sounded like. I'm seeing Mono in 2 weeks so i'll update ya'll on that then

I just went to Nickel Creek with Fiona Apple.  Just got back from it like an hour ago.

It was interesting.  I assumed 'Nickel Creek with Fiona Apple' meant Fiona Apple would come on, play her set, then Nickel Creek would play theirs.

Instead, it was basically a two and a half hour Nickel Creek show where Fiona Apple came up and sung like seven or eight of her songs, with Nickel Creek as her band playing bluegrassy versions of her songs.

It actually made some of her songs more enjoyable, and it was a really interesting take on Criminal.

I think this is the kind of thing bands should do at live shows.  I hate it when bands just play down their latest album's tracklist.  Bands should do something new and unique with their music.  Nirvana Unplugged, for example, is a great example of this because they played so many Meat Puppets songs on it.  And Brian Wilson is great because Smile just sounds way better live than on that studio version.  Bob Dylan is great because he's constantly re-imagining his old classics with his new style, and he has almost a completely different setlist every show, so every show is different.

This is the kind of show I might actually listen to a CD of, if it came out.

I saw Stars yesterday at the new Music Hall of Williamsburg (used to be North 66) and they have mysteriously gone from disappointing live (see: Summerstage 2006) to completely rock solid.  Highlights included Torquil festooning himself with lights for Genova Heights and Amy & co. throwing flowers into the audience throughout.  I find that the material on the new album is their strongest yet.  And, yeah, they totally finished with Calendar Girl.

So if you were holding off on seeing them because of past live experiences, I suggest giving them another try.

They played everything you'd have wanted them to, they were intense as shit while doing it, they were obviously genuinely pleased to get such a good reaction and to be playing, it was in one of my favourite venues, the sound was fantastic, tons of my friends were there... basically, it was one of those gigs where everything is absolutely perfect.

Definitely.  The Knitting Factory show that I've written about before where Ted "left his larynx on the stage" is still the best I've had, followed closely by all the times I've seen him at Irving Plaza.   I've gone to the South Seaport free shows that he's put on for the last couple of years, but since you can't really hear Chris Wilson, his brilliant drummer, the music loses a lot.  He gave a suprisingly intimate show at McCarren Park Pool this year though -- I guess because the acoustics there are almost like a bandshell.  Shame that last I heard they're going to be filling it with water.

Let's see, I saw two shows in two nights at Smog, a converted garage here on campus. I saw Twin (awful), Yip-Yip (awesome), and Gowns (unbelievably beautiful. Their album 'Red State' was playing on my ipod throughout the summer so seeing them live was a real treat).
The next night I saw a 5 band show: Upsilon Acrux (Very cool mathy-post rock), Child Abuse (Mathy hardcore), Made in Mexico (not sure how to describe them but really good anyway), Aa (Pronounced Big A Little a. Imagine if Animal Collective decided to become a tribal drumming group in the distant future and that's sorta what these guys sounds like. Another band I was really looking forward to seeing based upon how great the album of their's I heard was), and, finally, Ruins (fucking immensely over the top and brilliant Japanese noise rock). All in all they were two fantastic shows with only a couple detracting elements (Twin was terrible and Aa's set was cut short).

I am intensely jealous, I'd love to see Ruins. This also prompted me to find out what Gowns sound like. Nice, and I can imagine it working even better live than on record.

Last show was Skinny Puppy with White Mice and Otto Von Schirach.

Otto is something very strange.  He wears a verrrry cheap superhero outfit with diapers and a Tonto/Robin mask. He uses all these cheap light up props while he twiddles on his computer and yells a bunch.  I guess his album title, Maxipad Detention is a pretty good indication of what his act was like.

Stranger still was White Mice who played very thick, very loud noise.  All well and good but they did so while wearing incerdibly lifelike mouse masks that had exposed brains, light up twinkly eyeballs, and twitchy noses along with bloody labcoats.

Skinny Puppy was amazing, though I expect this much to be a given.  The sound was good, they played a lot of old stuff (though nothing from Last Rights, poo!), and had a much more stripped back, though no less effective show.  Ogre is scarily charasmatic.  He sucks everybody up without really saying much until the encores.

On a side note...pack of wolves, that Schiele icon(I say icon as I can't remember what the damn things are called...my brain just sort of failed) is fantastic.

Why thank you, I do like a bit of the old Schiele. I always thought it was a pity that the Rachels album Songs For Egon Schiele was so lacklustre.

Your description has made me want to see White Mice all the more, that sounds amazing. Otto Von Schirach intrigues me too.
