Title: Vintage Gibson Info
Post by: nick_fs on 11 Aug 2007, 17:21
Hey everybody!  I've been trying to figure out the value of a guitar I inherited a while ago.  I live in the Oklahoma City metro area, and there aren't really any non-national chain guitar shops around that can give me a good estimate.  I've checked a few online vintage dealers, but they haven't been overly helpful.  I wanted to see if anyone here knew where else I should check.

Here is some info on the guitar:

1958 Gibson ES-175D Hollowbody Electric Jazz Guitar, Original PAF Humbuckers, Original Case, Missing Pickguard and Tone Knob, Neck Pickup not working, it's either wiring, bad pot, or bad pickup.  I've got some pics:

Thanks for helping!

it looks good. but i have no idea how much it would get you.

based on looks, alone, i'd say you could gain a pretty penny.

good luck selling it.

The ES -175 is pretty much the grandaddy of all modern jazz guitars.  That "jazz tone" that people try to get through hollowbody guitars with p-90s is the result of Gibson's inroduction of this guitar.

If you're looking for value, there is a guy in Phoenix who is a top notch appraiser.  He could probably give you ballpark.  He can be reached here- www.bizarreguitar.com .  As I understand it, phone calls are favored over emails.  My guitar player just bought Epiphone's goldtop reissue of the ES-175 from his shop, and given all the background he was able to provide, I would imagine he'll be able to help you.

I wouldn't really want to sell a guitar like that personally, seeing as it's pretty much the coolest thing ever, but that's just me.

Yeah, on one hand I think "Wow I have the coolest guitar ever."  But then I remember that I can't play worth a crap, I really don't have the time or attention span for lessons anymore, and I feel sad that the guitar is sitting in a closet collecting dust and not being enjoyed.  I'd almost rather it be in the hands of someone who will appreciate it AND play it...an unplayed guitar is an unhappy guitar.
