I'm a HUGE fan of the band Rilo Kiley, If you're not familiar with them, then I implore you to pick up one of their c.ds, except the new one, Under the Blacklight. I was listening to their c.d on myspace and it sounds like a 1970s band, not an alternative rock with a hint of country Rilo Kiley that I knew and loved.
Does anyone else agree with me?

Well, maybe you should take a look. Or take a hear, haha. http://www.myspace.com/rilokiley (http://www.myspace.com/rilokiley) They have like 5 good songs, the rest is twangy vocals with way too cheesy/funky backrounds. Silver Lining, Dreamworld, Smoke Detector, Under the Blacklight, and Dejalo are some of the more bareable. While The Moneymaker is downright dreadful.

I liked More Adventurous. Haven't heard this one but I did download it and it's in a zip on my hard drive. Will get to it later.
-
Oh totally. I was going to start this thread last night when I first listened to the album but I realized that I didn't care for the album enough to take the initiative. I think BrooklynVegan summed it up best: "It transports me to another place . . . an elevator or a dentist's sitting room."
The really sad thing is that Jenny Lewis' voice is completely wasted, since this is a huge step down from Rabbit Fur Coat. Although The Moneymaker" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtyhWo8qngk) video is still pretty amusing.
I should say though that this is exactly the kind of repetitive uninspired songwriting that gets constant radio play and makes Billboard To 10.
-
Agreed,
Rabbit Fur Coat was great, because it wasnt under the Rilo Kiley name. It was under Lewis' name so we could expect something completely different.
-
This album is pretty awful. It really saddens me, because Rilo Kiley was the first band that really got me into music that wasn't on the radio.
-
same here chamberk

I haven't heard the album, but I just read an article that said it was going funkier and poppier. That didn't turn me off until I heard that one of the guys who helped produce albums for Gwen Stefani helped them. Now I'm frightened.
-
I haven't heard it yet, but it's always good to see a band doing something different. Rilo Kiley were starting to get boring. I have a feeling this one will suck though.
-
I pretty much adore Jenny Lewis, but Rilo Kiley bore me to shit.
-
I like it. Part of it is that I absolutely hate country music, so I couldn't handle More Adventurous or Rabbit Fur Coat. I don't think Rilo Kiley will ever match The Execution of All Things again.
Basically, Jenny Lewis has an awesome voice, and Under the Blacklight is a nice pop album. End of story.
-
I too am disapointed because I loved Rabit Fur Coat and More Adventurous...but this is so different. I think as a bid for radio mainstream success it still might be better than lots of stuff out there. I've only really listened to the Moneymaker single, and all I can say is, I know its Jenny Lewis, and Rilo Kiley but it just doesn't sound like them. Sigh....
-
Your complaining is like white noise to me while I listen to the fun sounds this album delivers. There are one or two tracks I am not super fond of but on one listen I am enjoying this more than any of the other Rilo Kiley albums I have heard.
-
Smoke Detector is the best song on the c.d...
The lyrics are SO Rilo Kiley
-
I love Jenny Lewis. She can do the frug.
Album is okay.
-
she cant do the frug... She can do the smurf though!
comic about how I feel about under the blacklight... tommorow

This is a wonderful pop album and the NPR review had it down. This is Jenny Lewis exploring her sexuality and pop sensibilities. If this gets them more fans, then screw elitism. Rilo Kiley deserves a bigger audience, and Jenny's voice and talent should help bring em in if people would just hear them.
