I know this leaked awhile ago, but I didn't download it until today--and anyway, it's not officially out until September 11th.
In terms of how it sounds or compares to previous albums...the best way I can think of to summarize it is as being everything you either like or don't about Animal Collective, only more. It's more electronic sounding than even Feels, though not in a techno-y sort of way. It uses loops and noise in the same way that Panda Bear's Person Pitch did, but is not as hypnotic. There is a pinch more noise and screaming than before, though it's not their experimental or noise record, so don't fret.
The biggest difference is that the vocals aren't as Brian Wilson-y as Person Pitch or as reverb drenched/druggy/hypnotic as on Feels or Sung Tongs. I would almost describe it as their pop record because of this, but it's too weird to ever be popular.
After a few spins, I'd say it definitely ranks below their last two. It's still worth picking up if you like Animal Collective, but it doesn't have the same perfection and balance between weirdness and catchiness that Feels and Sung Tongs do.

You are wrong and this album is amazing
-
i have never heard Animal Collective. upload it to my internets and i will contribute my thoughts on the matter for you all to enjoy.
-
So, let me get this straight.
The new Go! Team album comes out on the 10th of September.
The new Animal Collective album comes out on the 11th of September.
Best fucking birthday ever.
-
The 10th or 11th?
-
You've gotta spread a birthday over the course of at least a week to make it worthwhile.
-
11th I think was said. Think was said was. This album is great. IT IS GREAT. I'll upload it to the sendspace thread tomorrow with some live stuff.
-
i'm downloadin it now. VERY EXCITED.
-
Dude, I like the album. I just think that Feels and Sung Tongs are better.
-
Yeah but this album doesn't have any boring songs.
Feels has many boring songs.
-
All true. I personally liked the drugged/hypnotic quality of their previous albums, but to me Strawberry Jam feels like it's more together than the Sung Tongs or Feels.
Although this could just be due to the fact that I downloaded Jam as a whole, as opposed to their others which I limewired individually by song.
I think as an album it's great, but as simply some Animal Collective songs it's nothing special. If that makes any sense.
-
I oprewfer blackcurrant jam

Yeah but this album doesn't have any boring songs.
Feels has many boring songs.
You say "many boring songs" like there's 20 songs on the thing. Ah well.
-
I need this album. But maybe, just maybe, for once, I'll wait until it comes out and buy it.
-
I pretty much listened to this record 4 hours straight yesterday.
It was the shit.
-
Feels has many boring songs.
I skip tracks 5 to 8 all the time.
-
Hey, I like tracks 5-8. Yes, even Bees. And Banshee Beat is amazing. I guess it doesn't help that the slower songs on the album are all grouped together. They're all great though.
Now, Sung Tongs, there's an album comprised of mostly boring songs. As in, all the ones that aren't Leaf House, Who Could Win A Rabbit, and We Tigers.
Haven't heard SJ yet, but I love Peacebone. From just that song, I would agree with the original poster. This could be an excellent pop song if it wasn't incredibly fucking weird. And for that I love it. Animal Collective seems to be progressively moving in a Unicorns-type direction, which is a wonderful thing.
-
I like tracks 5-8. I do. I just tend to skip them, as I listen to Animal Collective when I'm in a certain loopy, weird, upbeat mood.
-
Guys the Peacebone video probably scarred me for life
watch it! (http://youtube.com/watch?v=fxvGHQHiY70)
-
I can't get into it. But maybe it'll grow on me.
-
I don't skip a single song on any Animal Collective album. Whatever.

I don't skip a single song on any Animal Collective album. Whatever.
YES.
-
The Peacebone EP has a Pantha Du Prince remix that's super stellar. If you like Kompakt stuff, that is.
A total dream come true for me...
-
They are playing in Hollywood. I think I am going?
-
You should go. I hear their live show is cool, despite what people on here will tell you. Certainly live footage of them that was posted recently on Pitchfork was cool--seeing them construct 'Leaf House' live is neat-o.
