Title: Looking for critique
Post by: pentaen on 27 Aug 2007, 10:21
Hey i am starting up a very small local record label and was wondering if you think that this band could sell. To me they sound a little too sufjan-ish, but idk what do you think

I agree that it's quite poppy.  I wasn't impressed.  It seemed a lot like all that acoustic indie pop bullshit that's clogging the airwaves.  They'll sell but as art they miss the mark in my book.

yea that was my concern. Im really looking for something unique, even if it isn't necessarily a chart topper. There has to be some new sound out there that has yet to be discovered...

would you rather a band that sounds like this or something more 90's Indie Rock sounding like sebadoh?

If you could find a band that would make me smile and say "Oh, man, these guys love Sebadoh and it shows," that would be awesome.

Both of those criteria have to be fulfilled though. If I say that without smiling there is a problem.

Can I not suggest that if you think it'll sell, you'd do well to at least have a band or two on your label that sell records even if they suck ass? Brotha's gotta eat.

I dunno, the market is ripe for a satire of Sufjan Stevens, and these guys seem to be able to bring the goods.  They clearly have a banjo.

Though a brotha does indeed gotta eat, a brotha also has gotta look to spread good music.

Yes, but if history has taught as anything, it's that a lot of the time, good music - although I'm not sure whether I'd define either this, or what it's ripping off, as good music - doesn't necessarily sell any records. And if you sell two copies of the most original album ever made, then your label will go bust.

These guys are certainly not terrible. I think they have talent but should just try a different direction with their music. If this direction was a Sebadoh direction I would applaud you sir for signing them.

That wasn't terrible.
Well I disliked it about the same amount I dislike Sufjan
It could sell pretty well
I hear Band of Horses amish style
Other than that I don't know what to say, it could be big or it could do nothing  probably depending if Pitchfork is in a good mood or not when they listen to the demo
