What do people think of this? I thought The Gulag Orkestar was really awesome, but I've only listened to this about 2 times and I'm already liking it a ton! It doesn't hurt that Owen Pallett is doing the strings also.
-

I feel like taking a picture to prove that I'm shedding actual tears right now.

There was a thread about the owen/zach collaboration ally, pay attention to the stuff that matters!. Dling now, can't wait!

I knew that they played shows together but I don't really read the music forum often. Can you or someone else sendspace this or link a sendspace? I'm having trouble downloading it (I suck).

There. Sendspace'd.

I don't know what to think of the album yet. I was pretty much crapping myself thinking about it before it leaked, as well as shedding a few happy tears of my own (seriously, I know it's sad, but I love everything that Owen Pallett touches, as well as loving Beirut). It's pretty good, I guess, and I'm glad that there's artistic growth happening, but I really did LIKE that whole pseudo-Balkan sound dominating. Did I just wreck the surprise, by implying that he's not always using the same style anymore? Oh well. Listen for yourself.

I'm listenin to it now and it doesn't sound to removed from the whole Balkan thing to me. To be honest, I found that a little tiresome in Gulag Orchestar and found it drowned and some potentially really great songs. That being said, I do love that album, and judging from the five songs I've just listened to this is at least as good.

Well I love it more
Anyways I'm really digging this! More than Gulag Orkestar I think. This album feels really fresh to me.
-
I believe Zach's exact words were that anyone who called this Balkan "didn't know what the fuck they were talking about" or "had vicious psychedelic hornets in their ears" or something of the sort. Expect Pitchfork to called it "uber-Balkan", the filthy iconoclasts.

Nope. Not possible.
So yesterday I had finally listened to a bunch of new albums PROPERLY, all the way through (Cameron Bird in Architecture in Helsinki radically changed his singing style! the New Pornographers did an album of slow songs? The Weakerthans sounding sort of weary...) and then Beirut went and and changed his stuff up too, so I was basically in new music overload....because seriously, old favourite bands can't do that en masse, even though it's their prerogative....my head will explode. Each of the albums is at least pretty good, upon relistening after some sleep (almost none though, hey early morning construction folk, thanks for doing that right outside my window) but I didn't like them much upon a first impression.
This is my favourite of the morning though. And I take what I said back. It's really isn't THAT far removed from Gulag Orkestar, stylistically, but the major overtones have been stripped....leaving behind some very sweet ditties (and so much strings!!!!!) If I may make a terrible analogy, it's like if Gulag Orkestar was a big, strong boy, then this is his pretty little sister who's got a decent amount of punch herself.
Anyways, I ramble. I am gonna try and sleep again. The Flying Club Cup is really good. I just fear the new instinctively.

I like that analogy, and yes sometimes I hate when bands change but most of the time? It's for the good.
I forgot Ally is saving her heart for Owen.

THIS THREAD NEEDS MORE ZACH:

You can tell that he's thinking "Ol' Ludwig Van ain't got shit on me!" Also, I heard that after Own and Zach finalized the string arrangements they spooned for hours.

If he found a pocket trumpet (in regards to the picture above) that actually doesn'tsuck completely, I will have to send many, many emails to find out what model and make it is. Seriously those things are terrible.
I listened to this with a friend, and while it was background music I liked it all right. However, when I listened by myself, I thought it was really droning. The second and third track (nantes and second smile) practically bleed together as far as I could tell, and the fourth was a bit too much of a Yann Tiersen rip for me. I dunno, I know I'll give it more chances, but on first listen I just moved on after five tracks.
