Do the things (books, movies, music etc...) you loved as a kid hold up to the test of time? I've been thinking about this as more and more books I used to love as a kid are made into movie, which really just makes me think about all those things that were my obession back in the day which have been replaced by newer, though maybe not cooler, things to obsess over...like QC
Back in the dayI loved Roald Dahl books, which are still good and Tamora Pierce books, which are not nearly as good 10 years later and Animorphs which were terrible then and now.
Ghostwritter - which is excellent only if you want to see Julia stiles at age 12 being a "hacker", and Power Rangers.
Sometimes I am amazed I made it out of middle school undamaged.
So what did you really dig as a kid, do you still like it?
-
Ghostwritter
YES.
i was obsessed with movies like The Secret Garden, and Anne of Green Gables. shows like Step by Step, Ghostwritter, and Simpsons.
as for music, i got my first copy of Revolver in 1st grade.
and i'm pretty sure i would watch/listen to any of it to this day.
-
There are certain movies that I can't watch, because I'm afraid of how terrible they'll be.
-
Fuck yeah. (http://amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0064401707/theonion-20)

Oh, god. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. How the hell did I read that book without being terrified for weeks on end? I still start worrying a bit when someone's face itches.
Also, I bought the DVD for Pete and Pete: GODDAMNED EXCELLENT SHOW. It doesn't matter how old you are.
I'm curious if Salute Your Shorts holds up.
-
I was always too much of a chicken for scary stories to tell in the dark!
Though I think my first CD was a Bruce Springsteen Bsides CD that I stole from my dad.
-
Series of Unfortunate Events.
I used to read them all the time, and I grew up. And he kept on publishing books, and I read them and was like "Ew.."
-
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe - Yep, still just as awesome.
X-Men animated series (1990s) - Yep, still just as awesome.
Batman: The Animated Series - Possibly more awesome than it was when I was younger.
Thundercats - I'll let you know when I can afford the box sets.
-
Lemme get a checklist going:
Batman: TAS - As Jimmy said, it seriously held up. I watched Mask of the Phantasm again recently and it's better than Batman Begins and I liked Begins.
X-Men - Still fun, but doesn't hold up nearly as well.
Spider-Man - Utter garbage in retrospect.
Gargoyles - Hold up almost as well as Batman.
Exo-Squad - I'm still waiting for a DVD of this. I have no idea how well it holds up.
The Simpsons - Going back and watching episodes from when I was a kid, they're even funnier now that I'm old enough to get everything.
Darkwing Duck - When not taken seriously, this is still surprisingly amusing as a satire.
Boy Meets World - It goes half and half. I can accept the fact it's aimed mostly at children, but there's enough for adults in there that I could picture myself watching it with my kids someday.
Whole tons of Disney Stuff - When I was in my teens, I shit all over this stuff, but as an adult I can see that a lot of this stuff was actually really good. I long for the days when you could actually show violence and death in a kids' movie and portray it as something real that we all have to deal with yet not go overboard.
Indiana Jones - The first and third, yes. I really cannot rationalize Temple of Doom as being a good movie, though.
Star Wars - Fuck yes!
Salute Your Shorts - Always gonna rule.
I've been meaning to check out the Super Mario Bros. Super Show DVD set to see if that holds up. I fucking loved that show. I've seen a couple episodes of the Legend of Zelda and realized it was garbage, so my hopes are not high.
Then there's a long list of utter garbage that doesn't hold up and should be lumped together - Power Rangers, Family Matters and Step By Step.
Contrast this with now, where all I watch regularly on TV are Heroes and Lost. I watched a lot more TV as a kid.
-
Ghostwriter
Oh man, I remember when I used to rave about Ghost Rider when I was a kid and because I used to speak very quickly and kinda mumbley all the other kids would be like "Ghostwriter? That show is shit!"
Gargoyles - Hold up almost as well as Batman.
Agreed. I have the first two seasons on DVD. Awesome fun.
-
When I was younger I loved the "Strange Matters" series of books. Seriously, what was I thinking???
X-men - I still think it holds up, but I was pretty much obsessed with it as a kid, so yeah.
Power Rangers - yikes
My Side of the Mountain - Still awesome. Who wouldn't want to live in the hollowed out trunk of a giant-ass tree??
Fraggle Rock - Somehow, I think it's more awesome now than when I was a kid.
PeeWee Herman - Ditto.

-
Rocko's Modern Life only got better. It ages well like a fine wine.
-
Whereas every other Nicktoon fell to shit. Even Ren and Stimpy and Doug fall short upon reexamination.
-
Dexter's Lab and Invader Zim are still fun as heck
-
I disagree. Dexter's Lab lost its luster by the age of fourteen for me and I only found Invader Zim funny from about the age of seventeen to nineteen. After a year or two I realized it was just senseless forced randomness for the sake of playing upon Generation ADD.
-
I still love Dexter, but I've always hated Invader Zim. It has never been funny.
Ahh! Real Monsters was great.
Courage The Cowardly Dog is alright.
-

I was appaled to find that one of my friends did not know about this show.
Mighty Max and Blues Clues
-
Anyone seen wishbone after the age of 10, is it still good? You know the one with the dog who acts out literature. That show actually lead me to pick up a few books. So I guess PBS works.
-
Guys,
The Angry Beavers.
Greatest show EVER.
-
Ahh! Real Monsters was great.
Ahh! Real Monsters was fantastic, and I suspect it still would be awesome.
-
porn babies will never get old :-D
but superheroes has really lost their glow the past 10 years...nothing can compare to old school marvel..except a few adult comics(preacher and that kinda stuff)
dexter was awsome, but it has really gone bad the last years..cartoon network here in norway really sucks...
but the grim adventures of billy and mandy...maaan,they are really good puttin in jokes for a more grown audience...
"there were hardly any pirates in that movie" - blackbeards booty
-
Ahh! Real Monsters was great.
Ahh! Real Monsters was fantastic, and I suspect it still would be awesome.
When I lived in Cleveland, my roommate and I had the video game for it. That game was awesome. It was hard, but really awesome
-
Oh man this thread makes me happy.
Shows:
Are You Afraid of the Dark? - One of my friends has the entire series on DVD and we watched a bunch one spring break. The newer ones were terrible and the older ones were still kind of cool, but I think the best part was how FUNNY they were.
Ahh! Real Monsters - I loved this show, especially the guy who had to hold his own eyes and had hairy armpits.
Batman (animated) - Still good.
Animaniacs - Still good and I plan on buying it on DVD when I get the chance.
Ghostwriter - It was awesome and I was always mad when I was a kid when they were very irregular with the shows.
Arthur - HEY! (I have no shame in watching this if it's on PBS and I happen to notice.)
Gargoyles - Haven't seen it in a while, but I really want to watch it again to see if it's still cool.
Power Rangers - Only the first season.
My Little Ponies
Popples - No one ever remembers this unless they had a toy.
FRAGGLE ROCK!!!! - I still love this show and I will buy it for my children so they can grow up with its awesomeness.
Books:
Scary Stories - Loved these things.
Jean Craighead George was one of my favorite authors, esp. her book There's a Tarantula in My Purse.
Where the Sidewalk Ends
Dr. Seuss (There's a Wocket in My Pocket, One Fish, Two Fist, Green Eggs and Ham.)
Where's Waldo?
There are others, but it's too much to write down in one post and I can't think of them all right now.

There was a game???? How did I miss this gem?

My room mate acquired the entire series and now my friends and I have weekly meetings of the midnight society (in other words we all gather around sunday nights and watch a choice episode of the show). Spooky times!

Most of the Nicktoons have gotten video games. Off the top of my head there's been games for Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Ahh! Real Monsters, Rocko's Modern Life, Wild Thornberries and Rocket Power. I don't think there's been anything for Doug or Invader Zim, though. Is that all of them?
-
Guys,
The Angry Beavers.
Greatest show EVER.
-
Yeah I guess I should have assumed. I'm pretty sure there has been no Doug video game, and I'm not sure but Invader Zim may have been too short lived to earn its way into gamedom.
-
Guys,
The Angry Beavers.
Greatest show EVER.
Thank you.
-
Off the top of my head there's been games for Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Ahh! Real Monsters, Rocko's Modern Life, Wild Thornberries and Rocket Power.
You missed Spongebob.
That's like being able to name all the islands in the Caribbean and forgetting Jamaica.
-
don't forget fairly odd parents
they even had one where they took various characters from different shows and put them in
and that AH! Real Monsters game was hard as hell.
-
Animaniacs - Oh boy did this show make me laugh.
My Little Pony - I watched it when I was really young.
Popples - Little Bit was the cutest thing ever.
Fraggle Rock - Down in Fraggle Rock *clap clap* Down in Fraggle Rock.
Transformers - I watched the old movie the other day, and I still found myself quite amused at some of the stuff.
As for books, best I can do recall that I found an old Christopher Pike book of mine about a year ago. I didn't read it, but I had fond memories of it. I'm not sure how it actually holds up though.
-

Dude, that game was hella easy. We played it while drunk usually.
Also, best part of Fraggle Rock was their fucking theme song. "Dance your cares away, worries for another day. Let the music play, Down at Fraggle Rock." They just wanted to dance. And fuck, dancing is what it is all about.

Freakazoid (http://youtube.com/watch?v=yGqxb3vLL1A=) never gets old.

To be fair, I was fifteen or sixteen by the time Spongebob came out. It tends to slip my mind as being an actual Nicktoon (I tend to first remember the original line of Doug, Rugrats and Ren and Stimpy). How I remembered Invader Zim being one, but slipped on that and Fairly Odd Parents (Which I actually watch from time to time and enjoy) is beyond me.
-
I have to be honest. Jem and the Holograms isn't quite as good as I thought it was.

SPOOOOOON
-
In a list from best to not quite as best...
1. Angry Beavers... this show was the most amazing thing I have ever had the honor to watch. I still love it to this day.
2. Freakazoid, as this forum already knows the Candlejack episode is amazi...
3. Recess, I don't know about you guys but I loved TJ and the rest of the Recess gang
4. Hysteria, I was at one time a history major so liking this show makes sense.
5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a little corny now that I am older but still damn good.
-end transmission-

I know the Universe hates me simply because Wishbone will never be released to DVD, so that I may have the glory of keeping it on in a room 24 hours a day.
What's the story, Wishbone?
WHAT'S THE STORY??
-
Am I the only person that remembers 'Dino-Riders'? With the alien people guys that rode dinosaurs they had made friends with but the bad guys used computers to control them and the toys were awesome I also remember the street fighter fighter toys by the same company I had a few of them I would make Guile and Ryu fight dinosaurs and then ride them it was awesome.
The TV show<The toys
I think it's the same for most TV shows from the before time. Take Mighty Max for example, best TV show ever. But the toys were even better.

Dude, you don't get to talk about Dino-Riders unless you can remember what the bad guys are actually called (they're the Rulons). I fucking love that show and it turns out it holds up because I was watching it on video at my dads place last time i was there. I'm going to have to see if it is on dvd yet. Krulos, Rasp and Hammerhead are the best villains ever.
-
Things that really haven't held up:
Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang
The Redwall books
The BBC versions of The Chronicles of Narnia
Things that have:
The Adventures of Pete & Pete
Reboot
...eh, and a bunch of others. A lot of them I have never stopped watching or reading.
-
4. Hysteria, I was at one time a history major so liking this show makes sense.
fuck, I totally forgot about that show. I remember walking up way earlier then I should have just to watch this show.
-
Chitty chitty bang bang went from being really cool and awesome when I was young, to vaguely creepy and disturbing. Still worth watching every now and then though.
-
creepy like that kid hunter guy? OH So thats where Micheal Jackson got his inspiration !
on another related topic I remember reading a story of a kid who gets fillings and then was able to pick up radio transmissions if he pretended to chew on his spiral bound notebook. something of spaceships shaped like hamburgers. the title - author escapes me though. seemed cool at the time.
-
Does anyone here remember that crappy soap opera for teens they made in the 90s called "Swan's Crossing" ?
-
....Nope.
4. Hysteria, I was at one time a history major so liking this show makes sense.
fuck, I totally forgot about that show. I remember walking up way earlier then I should have just to watch this show.
I remember that! Special Bob and his "Hiyooooo". The one about the Civil War was always my favorite, because of the one guy basically being turned into a pyromaniac (I forget which general it was).
Pinky and the Brain is technically a part of Animaniacs, but they ended up with their own show and I loved Pinky. Pinky is the awesome.

Best cartoon ever.
-
Two movies I can't believe I didn't list:
and
(http://www.peterbeagle.com/raven/images/14jan2007/LastUnicorn25thAnniv3.jpg)
I wore out my Land Before Time tape and I was really surprised I didn't my Last Unicorn tape, because I watched them both alot. I still have the latter and it still works. (Yes I still watch it occasionally.)
I liked several of Don Bluth (http://imdb.com/name/nm0089940/) films (esp. LBT and Secret of NIHM) and the older Disney movies (Sword in the Stone is my favorite).
-
I used to love Dino-Riders. Seems a quick site turned up a site, interesting. http://www.dinoriders.com/ (http://www.dinoriders.com/)
