I just got back from Shoot 'em Up, and it is easily one of the best and funniest action flicks I have ever seen. It's a parody of the type of film that the others mentioned in the poll are and so well done that it manages to be over the top without being cheesy. Plus Monica Belluci gets naked.
-
I say Crank but I really want to see Shoot 'Em Up, so my opinion may change after I see it
-
The answer is clearly Shoot 'Em Up.
In a similar vein my new answer for "Best Lethal Weapon" film is now Hot Fuzz.
-
Crank had Dennis from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia in it.
On the other hand, in Transporter 1, he saves the day by pouring oil over himself, which is pretty nice. I'm torn...
-
If you answer anything but Shoot 'Em Up, you're wrong.
The answer is clearly Shoot 'Em Up.
I finally got around to seeing Hot Fuzz last night, it was fantastic.
-
I loved the hell out of Hot Fuzz. One of the first things I'm going to do when I move out is find out whether I should get the fullscreen or widescreen version of the DVD.
-
Widescreen for sure. It's such a good-looking movie.
-
Well, it'll depend on what kind of TV we have.
-
Unless the answer is "tiny" just go for widescreen dude.
-
Why would you ever get fullscreen?
-
Widescreen is always worth it. This way you can watch the whole movie.
-
I want to know what the deal is with the fuckin' carrots. Plus I am gay for Clive.
-
I wanted to love this movie and ended up hating it. If it only it had the wit of Hot Fuzz or the over-the-top choreography of Kung Fu Hustle. Instead, I saw a lazy, preachy mess. Half the time the director seemed to want Sin City's Clive Owen, and the other half he seemed to want to make a parody. If the fighting is repetitive and uninspired, calling it a parody doesn't make it work for me. And the carrot schtick -- three times?? We get the point.
This movie had all the sophistication of Scary Movie IV. It might be worth a 2:00am viewing on HBO but paying $11 for it made me feel ripped off.
EDIT: My answer to the poll is (5) These movies were all full of wasted promise and I'm going to rewatch Croupier now.
-

QFT.
Especially if you like movies. The pan and scans are just... painful in some full-screen versions.
-
I have only seen one of these movies, but I saw the words 'monica belluci' and 'naked' so I am voting for that one.
-

Actually that's a rule of comedy. Three times is the golden number for a funny bit.
-
I'll vote when I see any of those films.
I saw Hot Fuzz though. I wanted to love it, I really did but it only got a few good chuckles and only one really big laugh out of me.

Not only does she get naked, but Clive Owen has a gun fight and kills a bunch of dudes while simultaneously sticking it in her.

It's funny you should say that, because I've had and read quite a bit of discussion on that. There is a principle that if you repeat something three times it becomes funny but always when the third time is with a twist. So for instance, you put a bucket of water on top of an open door, I walk in, it falls on my head. Second time, bucket hits me on the head again. Third time, I open the door without entering, no bucket, I walk in confidently and step on a rake that smacks me in the face. That's basic physical comedy.
The problem with the carrot as a comedy bit is that it was essentially the same thing each time. Carrot in the eye, carrot in the mouth, carrot in the gun. For it to be comedic, it would have had to be (1) impales the guy with the carrot; (2) impales another guy with a carrot; (3) tries to impale the guy with the carrot but instead the guy eats the carrot so he just shoots him. Of course comedy theory is bullshit, you either find something funny or you don't and then you find reasons to explain your reaction. Sort of like music.
I've heard of another theory called the "Rule of 3 and 7", that when something is strictly repeated, it's funny for the first three times, and then again as of the seventh repetition. Family Guy does this a lot. After seven repetitions, you've entered a sort of metahumor region where you're thinking "there's no way they can possibly keep doing this" and they defy your expectations. But I don't really find this funny, personally :)
