I want to play the drums but at the moment getting a drumset is a bit above my budget.
Are there any cheap alternatives that let you practice except for going into a music store every saturday?

I don't know how long you could practice on that USB drumkit before getting bored of not having a real drumkit to beat the living shit out of, but I guess I just enjoy hitting things.
-
There is actually a USB drum kit here (http://www.firebox.com/index.html?dir=firebox&action=product&pid=1573¤cy_conversion=1).
Looks pretty amazing.
Not bad. Shame it's not midi and only works with the software included but nevertheless, £130 is still far less than even a crap drum kit. Failing that, the pots and pans aren't as silly an idea as you might think. A friend of mine took drum lessons while she saved up to get her first kit, so in order to practice between lessons she set up various things in the right positions. Apparently it worked pretty well.

You don't have to be alone, Joe. Hang with me, Joe!

i realized last night that an ashtray played on with a spoon makes a really cool sound...
but acctually its just your imagination that limits what you can use as a drum...

if you're just looking to get drum sounds - percussion for recording and whatnot - you can use a lamp shade for a good bass drum sound. But uh, as for an actual kit to practice on, try some of the stuff thats been listed already I guess. Or you could go the aforementioned Big Black route and pick up the roland, which is like instant cool points.
-
You could always look in your local paper or something for a used kit. There are also these...drum-pad things that percussionists in my high school band used to practice with, but I'm not really sure what they're called. They're just like these discs w/ a surface that you beat on. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
-
Electric drum pads will do short term, everything's in the right place that way.

The slow club play with a wooden chair and empty bottles.

Drum Pants! (http://www.freshcreation.nl/comments.php?id=1278_0_1_0_C)
-
As great as drum pants are, I imagine there is no better makeshift drum set than a toilet seat lid. I would see a band that used toilets as a percussion instrument. Try to imagine what you'd have to do the change the sound of the instrument...
-
Use a couple of old 55 gallon steel drums. It's what I play.
-
THOSE ARE NOT TOILETS ARE THEY? IF THEY ARE NOT TOILETS THEN I AM NOT INTERESTED IN YOUR SUB PAR BANG KIT.
-
You could try pvc pipe etc ala Blue Man Group (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Man_Group).
Add them to the pots and pans and you could get something really interesting going.
-
I think you should be able to get some great acoustics out of a toilet bowl.
Hang a seat from a rope and it's the new triangle.
It'll probably be pots and pans for now. toilet seat included.
-
Don't forget trashcans. (Prefferably the metal kind.)
Or you could do what Blue Man Group does and whack on a bunch of PVC piping
EDIT: Oh somebody already mentioned that, I missed it.
