Title: Is there a cheap alternative to drums?
Post by: StaedlerMars on 09 Sep 2007, 12:36: I want to play the drums but at the moment getting a drumset is a bit above my budget.

Are there any cheap alternatives that let you practice except for going into a music store every saturday?

Not bad. Shame it's not midi and only works with the software included but nevertheless, £130 is still far less than even a crap drum kit. Failing that, the pots and pans aren't as silly an idea as you might think. A friend of mine took drum lessons while she saved up to get her first kit, so in order to practice between lessons she set up various things in the right positions. Apparently it worked pretty well.

Post by: Freezey on 10 Sep 2007, 17:26: if you're just looking to get drum sounds - percussion for recording and whatnot - you can use a lamp shade for a good bass drum sound. But uh, as for an actual kit to practice on, try some of the stuff thats been listed already I guess. Or you could go the aforementioned Big Black route and pick up the roland, which is like instant cool points.

There are also these...drum-pad things that percussionists in my high school band used to practice with, but I'm not really sure what they're called. They're just like these discs w/ a surface that you beat on. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Post by: Spinless on 11 Sep 2007, 15:52: As great as drum pants are, I imagine there is no better makeshift drum set than a toilet seat lid. I would see a band that used toilets as a percussion instrument. Try to imagine what you'd have to do the change the sound of the instrument...

Add them to the pots and pans and you could get something really interesting going.
