Title: Music for an ex-girlfriend whose cat just got run over...
Post by: C Patrick Carolan on 15 Sep 2007, 01:58
I'm making a mix CD and I need your help. My ex-girlfriend's cat was killed this week, and seeing as she's been bugging me for a CD for a while now, I figure I'd try to make her one that's the sort of thing you can put on when you're sad that might bring a smile without being annoyingly happy, if that makes any sense. Happiness is a sad song, y'know?

So far I've got a few songs selected:

The Beta Band - Dry the Rain
Death Cab for Cutie - Your Heart is an Empty Room
Yo La Tengo - Black Flowers
Sister Vanilla - Can't Stop the Rock
Feist - So Sorry (or maybe One Two Three Four... haven't decided yet)

And I know I'm going to put at least one Belle and Sebastian song on here, but I don't know which track yet.

Anyway, I was hoping some of you kids here might be able to suggest a song or two...?

Pixies - Get The Fuck Over It It Was Just a Cat

A lesser known b-side of theirs...

Or perhaps Pogues - Pick Up Another Stray, They're All Over the Place

But on the serious side, why would you help someone wallow in depression ?  I'd feel like if I felt that way, I would want someone to cheer me up, not make things darker.

I would want them to cheer me up with hugs and kisses. You should make a mix about making out and having sex.

Cat Scratch Fever - Ted Nugent

Cat Power - Empty Shell

Cat Stevens - I Love My Dog.

When I'm in a shitty mood, I tend to want to listen to music that makes me feel worse. *shrug*

'Here Come the Martian Martians' by Jonathan Richmond and the Modern Lovers is a great, funny song that's pretty hard not to smile to. It's not really happy but it's kinda goofy.

And that my friend, is where emos come from!

Although, normally the music fabricates the crap mood in the case of emos...but you know what I'm getting at.

The Cat Empire - All That Talking

Aaron Copland - I Bought Me A Cat

Leroy Anderson - The Waltzing Cat

The Coasters (or maybe The Beatles; even better, The Basics) - Three Cool Cats

Rossini - Duet for Two Cats

Biber - The Cat

Duke Ellington - Scattin' at the Kit Kat

Wynton Marsalis - The Cat in the Hat is Back

This is fun!

Really, I don't think putting cat in the title of every song is going to help get over a dead cat.

I say just put Marvin Gaye- Sexual Healing on repeat for an hour.

my suggestion would be, don't make mix cd's for ex-gf's, but that's just me.

If your ex buried the cat under a tree I would suggest 'Sonata Arctica - Under Your tree'

If you're girlfriend likes wallowing in self pity (as I know I sometimes do) I would give her Daniel Johnston or The Weakerthans (John K. Samson is an unfairly good lyricist when it comes to the melancholy).
