So I saw this movie for the first time tonight and the entire time I was thinking to myself "Since when did Willem Dafoe play Jesus? How did I miss this?" That coupled with Harvey Keitel as Judas and it made what was already a pretty artistic piece of modern film one of the strangest things I've seen since, well, last semester when I saw an early Jim Henson avant garde short but since that was the strangest thing I've ever seen this movie ranks up there.
Anybody feel like ressurecting the 80's and talking about this with me? I'm not really sure as to the format of this forum since I don't post in here a lot but someone else has gotta have some sort of viewpoint, especially with this movie, which has got all sorts of (now very old news) controversy in it like the women at the Last Supper and that whole section at the end where Jesus lives out his life as a normal man.

I think it's one of the most (if not THE most) interesting Jesus movie that's been made. It's a really thoughtful exploration of the human side of Christ, something I haven't seen done in any of the movies before. The big stink about "oh, he gets off the cross there!" is unwarranted if you see the very end.

It makes you wonder if when it came out Churches were renting out movie theatres for "services" when it came out, like a certain snuff film that I know of.

that's how the Passion was described to me, though now that I look back that is a poor choice of words. though in Last Temptation Willem DeJesus totally gets it on with Magdelene.

Anywho, I think a lot of churches were more interested in their unwarranted protests of the movie than they were in actually seeing it.

My church (http://www.saddleback.com) had about twenty theaters reserved for two nights to see that movie.
It wasn't to protest it.

The Passion Of The Christ isn't a bad film in and of itself. If Mel Gibson had been able to keep his anti-Semetic mouth shut for a while or possibly even just died a short while after its release it wouldn't have the nasty cloud of self-righteousness that inevitably hangs over the movie.

Eh, I don't know, not being religious myself yet seeing the values in the teachings of "Jesus"(from whatever viewpoint you stand at) watching his death just doesn't seem like it gets across the point of his life. Though once again this is from the point of view of someone who hasn't seen it and should probably keep the mouth shut.

I found Passion to be exceptionally boring; given all the controversy surrounding it, I at least expected it to hold my interest for the time it was on. All I remember is like, the first half of it being nothing but dialog and then the second half being nothing but pointless brutality. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm a complete gore-hound; I love gory movies with a passion. But Passion of the Christ's violence in the second half just didn't work for me.
In my personal opinion, it was one of those movies that is so boring, I don't even consider it entertainment.

If you're watching it for violence you're kinda missing the point?

Well, I wasn't; it's just that given all the controversy surrounding it, I was expecting to be shocked to some extent.
Not only was I not shocked, but I was flat-out bored.
