Title: I got tickets for Modest Mouse.
Post by: C Patrick Carolan on 22 Sep 2007, 12:40
They're playing Calgary on November second and I managed to get tickets this morning! w00t, as the kids say.

I missed them last time they played here... hell, I didn't even hear about the show until the day of, and by then it was too late.

So.. who here has seen them live? I don't think I've ever even heard about one of their live shows from any of my friends, so I figured I'd put it out there and see what the general though is. I seem to be in the minority in that I loved We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank... anyone seen them on this tour? At $30 a ticket, this better be good.

i just saw them a few months ago and front row too. AMAZING, no matter what you have to do, you must make it to the front row, no matter who you have to blow or kill along the way

They suck now and their new material is boring live and they won't touch any of their classics, Isaac Brock has no energey, there's no real interplay between the musicians, they don't look like they're having fun, and they take an assholely long time to come out for an encore.

I hope you didn't pay too much for the ticket.

Either that or I hope you are stupid and like the new stuff better, cuz at least that way you won't be disappointed.

God fucking damn you.

Within the past year, I've had three opportunities to see them live, and all three times something else has gotten in the way.  :x

Well, think of it this way... this is the first time they've been to my city in three years, and you've had three chances to see them in the past year. How fair is that?

I know. I need to move to a city with a bettr "scene"

Keiffer, mayhaps last time you saw them live they weren't on their game, but when I saw them last March they weren't bad at all.  Isaac Brock had a ton of energy, a great stage presence, and put on a really solid show.  They played a few new songs, which seemed to please most of the crowd that was there, who only seemed to know material from the past two albums, especially the hits.  However, most of their set was of older songs, and the interplay between Johnny Marr and Brock on these songs was really awesome to see.

Now, the crowd was pretty awful.  Very little respect was shown by most members for anyone around them, there were a lot of people drunk to the point of stupidity, and they were just generally rude.  The show was good, but it was the worst crowd I've ever been a part of.

I saw them and did not have a good time at all. The crowd was obnoxious and only into "Dashboard" and "Float On" and Isaac Brock didn't even acknowledge the crowd once. They were boring and I would have rather stayed at home listening to their records. On the plus side, my friend bought my ticket so I didn't have to pay to go and Man Man opened which was fun. I'm pretty sure i have mentioned all of this in another thread somewhere on the forum.

I was really sad Man Man weren't opening when I saw them.  The openers I saw were really boring, and the songs seemed rather similar.

Man Man? I'm there, if they're coming around CO.

Might stick around for Marr, but Modest Mouse has never really appealed to me. Can't really say why.

I saw them in January and it was one of the worst concert experiences of my life. Which isn't to say it was entirely the Mouse's fault - the gig was at a festival, which was a 6 hour drive away, the rest of the lineup was absolute crap, it was a disgustingly hot day etc. MM were scheduled to play at 3PM but there was a fuckup with their gear at the airport 6 hours away in the city, so they were rescheduled for 11 PM. The band that was on before them played for way too long, and MM got on stage at 11:30. The few songs they managed to play were pretty good, they played some older stuff as well; but the audience was shit, screaming for Smiths songs and Float on. Then the band was asked to exit the stage at 12, and just walked off without another word. Disappointing.

Buuut if you're not seeing them at some crappy festival I bet it will be awesome.

I saw Modest Mouse right when Float On was at the height of it's popularity, and I went for Camper Van Beethoven, who were opening. I was bored and went back into the bar during MM's set. The crowd was full of people who don't normally go to shows, so it was a lot of being squeezed by the people around me and it was obvious that Modest Mouse were bored with what they were playing, as it was towards the end of the tour.

I would pay the $30 just for Man Man though no matter what the crowd was like.

I saw them this summer, and it was pure beauty. "Paper thin walls" followed by "Little motel" and so on. I love the modest mouse-sound, it´s an atmosphere.

Man Man puts on one hell of a show.  I just saw them a couple weeks ago at a small venue.  Dance party.  The last MM show I went to had a bnunch of teeny boppers moshing (I use that term loosely).  They played some older stuff-  Doin the Cockroach, Trailer Trash....  I wanted them to play Never Ending Math Equation, but no dice.

I saw them with the Pixies right before Good News came out and it was alot of fun even though it was at a huge outdoor arena-type event thing. The Pixies were the real treat though.

I saw them maybe a little under a year ago for some radio station show, and pretty much all the other bands had more stage presence. I mean if you like really like their music you'll have fun, but like others have said, it really looks like they're up there to do a job and get done. The concert was Silver Sun Pickups, The Shins, The Raconteurs, Modest Mouse and The Killers, and every other band looked like they were enjoying themselves a hell of a lot more the Modest Mouse.

How did this get revived a month later? Oh well... the concert is now this Friday, so I guess I'll find out for myself then.

For some reason I can't stop going back to the video for Dashboard on youtube. Maybe it is due to disbelief or the reason you can't take your eyes off of a horrible accident.

Well... that was the worst crowd I've ever been part of at a concert. When did Modest Mouse attract a 98% asshole fanbase?

How does crowd surfing during 'Float On' seem even remotley appropriate? Fucking fuck.

The band played a great set. Too bad there were so many asstwats around I didn't get to enjoy a minute of it.

If any thing the new material sounds a little commercial, i wonder if the record label is exercising a degree of control of Brock?

I seen MM play in my native city of Glasgow a few months back!

What a gig they played for us few thousand folk.

at the end of the gig one of the drummers threw the sticks out to the crowd. One landed on the wrong side of the front barrier and everyone groaned....so I scrambled over the barrier and claimed it....then recieved a big lecture that basically entailed my asse being ejected from the place if I EVER do that again.

Still have the stick though.

definetly worth it.

More likely the band themselves just enjoy the idea of success after so many years.

Saw them at the Joint here in Vegas two months ago. Brock was energetic, the show was great, didn't see a whole lot of band interaction. I do remember chuckling when I read the Asshole Rock strip, because I heard people bitching that Brock had been seen around the casino and had been less than friendly. Not that getting mobbed by fans makes one friendly. I would recommend the show, but I won't likely see them again because of the dick factor, I know that excludes a lot of bands, but oh-well.

Guys, Modest Mouse are huge sell-outs.

I don't really hate their new material, but I just don't like how mainstream and Ferdinand-y they've become. I would still go see them if they came around here, but that's just because lack of good gigs where I'm at.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is;Modest Mouse doesn't really excite me that much anymore. If there was good locals, or if Krug decided he was gonna play in these parts sometime, I would so hit that shit up before MM. The annoying teenage girls that frequently watch The OC know about Modest Mouse for Christ's sake... I mean, I hate to sound elitist, because I'm really not, but things like that just turn-me off of a band.

Modern Modest Mouse=Franz Ferdinand=WTFSELLOUT

MODIFICATION:. So to speak, Modest Mouse is to Indie-Rock as Blink182 is to Punk Rock.

When did Modest Mouse attract a 98% asshole fanbase?

I saw Modest Mouse right when Float On was at the height of it's popularity, and I went for Camper Van Beethoven, who were opening.

Camper Van Beethoven opened for Modest Mouse.  Camper Van Beethoven reunited and opened for Modest Mouse.

Camper... Van... Beethoven... opened... for... Modest... Mouse...

That... dear God.

That's like... Talking Heads reuniting and opening for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

It is exactly like that.

That is so depressing.

PS - I fail to see how it is not hilarious and awesome that people at a MM show were yelling for Smiths songs.  That's what I'd be doing!

I actualled liked Good News..., but We Were Dead... dissapointed me. To me, the latter record is their true "sellout" record. (If you even wanna call it that, I think the term's stupid anyway.) It seems like Modest Mouse were trying to advance  the sound of GNFPWLBN while still making it  more commercial, but instead it was just rather formulaic of their older material. Johnny Marr's playing on the album helps a bit, but I still think he and the rest of the band feel restrained. It's not that i's a BAD record; it's just not a good one either, in my opinion.

It seems to me like Modest Mouse has been steadily trying to remove the few redeeming qualities their music had in 1997 for the past 10 years and succeeding admirably.

When can they leave Epic?

Sony BMG, quite literally, ruin anything that they get their dirty mits on. WWDBTSES has to be their worst album, although it does have its moments.

Could someone please upload King Rat for me?

After the Moon and Antartica's unexpected 'hit' single, the label requested that they start writing singles. The intended singles on the 2004 album are obvious enough, take out the tracks that didn't have banjo in them.

At least the new album had that song 'Spitting Venom'.

Hmm rock bands seem to be using alot more brass, Issac make us Single, Fast!

In terms of the latest album I do like spitting venom, fly trapped in a jar, people as places as people and invisible.

I know this thread is pretty dead.... but.  I saw them lastnight.   I hate alot of the crowd.  To many frat boys.  Other than that it was a decent show.  You could tell they are pretty burnt out on some of the songs but they all really got in to some of them.  Johnny Mar is awesome.  This was the second time I have seen them.  The first time was at an outdoor festival thingy and they played all of the songs basicly as they are on the albums and didnt play alot of older stuff.  Lastnight they played a few older songs and then took some of the songs and turned them in to really long noisy self indulgent jams.  It was fucking awesome.   Tiny Cities Made of Ashes was like around 12 minuites long and sooooo awesome.    That is all.
