Title: Suggesting Rap.
Post by: StaedlerMars on 23 Sep 2007, 02:27
Inspired by the modern hip-hop and rap sucks thread;

I'm making a playlist with good rap. This doesn't have to be modern, this doesn't have to be non-pop.

It just needs to not be about how much money they have or how hard core they are. I started this little project, and then got stumped with the fact that my knowledge in this area is seriously lacking. I added some Jurassic 5, some Beastie Boys, a song of the Streets here and there, Cypress Hill, Rock the House by the Gorillaz, but then I didn't know what to do.

So any suggestions?

Eh, well, have some of this (http://www.buck65.com/secrethouse/audio/dirtywork/05_DirtyWork.mp3), same as the other thread, see if you like it.

Check out anything on Anticon, or Def Jux, De La Soul, Spank Rock, Too $hort, Wu-Tang and its various solo satellites, just go out and look for stuff, you'll find things you like if you keep an open mind about it.

In fact, there was a couple of hip hop records put up in the Sendspace thread recently, you should check and see if they haven't expired, because from what I remember they were all excellent.

Officially superior to The Chronic (although that's still a good record).

I would recommend MF Doom (Madvillain especially). So good. I posted in the other thread a link to download it.

Also, Eric B. And Rakim, Public Enemy, Ghostface Killah, Wu-Tang Clan, Run-DMC, A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, NWA, Madvillain, Nas, Raekwon, Genius/GZA, and The Roots.
And what he said.

Captain Dan and the Scurvy Crew and Futuristic Sex Robotz are fun, there's nothing wrong with some silly rap.

More seriously, I've enjoyed some Common and Lupe Fiasco tracks.  Jay-z has some decent stuff as well.  I'd say Lupe Fiasco's "Food and Liquor" and Mos Def's "The New Danger" are both great if you're looking for rap gateway albums.  Also, Kanye West has actually been putting out some decent stuff, despite his huge ego.

Edit: I downloaded an Aesop Rock album a few years ago because I liked their name.  I heard a song off their new(?) album and it was good.  I'll second that suggestion.

Non Phixion
Aesop Rock***
Andre Nickatina
Blackalicious
Deltron 3030 (I don't like his 'homosapien' stuff for some reason)
Immortal Technique
KRS-One
MC 900 ft. Jesus
MC Chris
Tech N9ne has a good song or two.

Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and of course Blackstar is all really good stuff. There's a few really good rap artists from the Minneapolis area as well, including Atmosphere, Heiruspecs, and P.O.S. that I recommend people check out as well.

On Elefant Traks-

The Herd
Astronomy Class
Unkle Ho
Ozi Battla
The Tongue
Hermitude
Urthboy

And some other things...

Curse ov Dialect
The Avalanches (but ONLY El Producto. Nothing else.)

I also have a shitload of French hip-hop somewhere. Once I find it, I'll list some of the good ones.

Hell yes, Witness (1 Hope) is an amazing track. Not that he hasn't done a lot of other great stuff but still, that track's pretty much perfect, and the video's brilliant. Also, let's not forget:

Yes, but it is for riding the snarling bad-ass giant doberman on his left.  In other words, it is a BAD-ASS jockey's helmet.

I don't know if anybody's heard of Saul Williams or his spoken-word stuff, but he's releasing his next album In Rainbows style (http://niggytardust.com/saulwilliams/download), 192 kbps free and 320 kbps or FLAC in exchange for a $5 paypal donation, on November 1. No idea whether it's good or not, but it's worth a look, at least.
