Seriously. How can you listen to music and not listen to Public Enemy? If you have any love for modern hip-hop in any of its forms then you owe a great debt to yourself to listen to Public Enemy. Their frenetic energy, powerful sloganeering and overwhelming personalities can be found in any amount you please in the music and performance of virtually any rapper or hip-hop group you care to name.
Start with Yo! Bum Rush The Show, their first record, and work your way forward. The following two records are their masterworks but Yo! is a good enough record that it just makes sense to move forward chronologically.

People who cannot recite the lyrics to at least three songs off Fear Of A Black Planet don't get invited to Johnny's birthday party, where there will be not one but two clowns. Get cracking people.
-
Coincidentally, I was just asking Public Enemy in Gabbly - I am actually listening to them for the first time right now. (Well, apart from the track that was on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2.)
Already, I like it. This is something I would not have contemplated saying about any rap until quite recently.

Bludgeon my person
Departing, departing, departed
Forsooth, I did telephone the emergency service department a fortnight ago
Verily, doth thou visualize the magnitude in which they respond?
Only doth they issue forth when they hath reason
Hark, fetch the coroner, prepareth the funeral ceremony for the departed
For they doth receive payment despite the actions they hath taken
Thou doth receive impeccable education the ruffians cannot be led astray

The emergency services are quite laughable.
Their lack of haste leads me to humorously induct them into royalty.

I had a look at them on youtube recently and to be honest it did not stir me. The song they did with Anthrax was interesting, but only really because it pointed out a way to rap/metal collaboration that isn't nu metal. The other videos I watched left me pretty cold. The music was just...boring.
-
Chuck D also collaborated with Thurston Moore on at least one occasion.
-
Who's Thurston Moore?
-
Vocals/guitar in Sonic Youth. He likes noise. A lot.
-
When I saw Subtitle open for the Islands, he told the crowd that Thurston Moore was his favourite rapper.
-
When I saw Sonic Youth they introduced Mark Ibold (bassist for Pavement, but you already know that, right??) as a British rapper.
-
yes this band was surely essential to my childhood. nothing like a poor ass white girl in a 1990 civic blasting public enemy
-
I was part of an Amnesty chapter in high school, and the only worthwhile thing we ever did was "celebrate" Black History month by having the lily white lot of us exchange music made by black performers. I contributed some Prince and Ink Spots, and got Fear of a Black Planet back. What a great album.

I love Public Enemy. You've got to love the total insanity of Flava Flav.
-
i got myself FOABP last night, and whilst enjoying the beats was dismayed to realise that they'ed put the wrong song with the wrong title! I was mightily disgruntled.

Full version of the Fight the Power (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jym-RtHHG0s) video.
So great.
Oh yes, still the best thing Spike Lee's ever done. It's just so damn angry and militant, hard to believe it isn't a real demo.

Never heard of Public Enemy, are they one of those hair metal bands? I don't like hair metal bands
-
Okay I'm gonna level with you guys, I have no Public Enemy and I don't think I've ever heard any album of theirs in full. Also I'm really broke right now. I guess what I'm saying is could someone help me out here?
(thankyou)

Everytime I hear PE (despite the fact that I own none of their albums) I get really into the rhythmic dynamics that are created between the actual beat and vocals of Chuck D. It sounds like angular rap to me sometimes. Just an opinion, I think it's a pretty great idea though.

Is that a joke, or not? I can't tell. If it isn't, remedy this immediately.

It is. Consider also that about half of their tunes unfold over a furious sample selection that's equal part beat and white noise.
-
Only ever heard Yo! Bum Rush the Show.
Not usually into Rap/Hip-hop, but the album is quite good considering.
Don't have as much to say as anyone else, but yeah.... Interesting music.

Yes it was a joke, Who would think that Public Enemy is a hair metal band.
I just heard Louder Than a Bomb and Bring the Noise (The PE version and the Anthrax with PE version)
They are great, it's the only thing I can say, great

So great.
I don't own any Public Enemy, guys! I feel bad about this, especially after watching that video.
