Title: So, you want to listen to music with balls?
Post by: Caspian on 04 Oct 2007, 01:21
There seems to be something wrong with this forum. People actually mention 'Sufjan Stevens' without adding 'lol' afterwards. There isn't a thread every day about how much Page France sucks. No one uses 'Conor Oberst' as an insult. Whilst I can't change the way people speak, (and I can't be bothered starting a Page France hate thread every day), I can try my best to educate people on the glories of music that aren't just a physical manifestation of oestrogen. So! Read on, download these albums, and before you know it you might actually grow some facial hair, and you'll be swapping those cardigans and crappy glasses for a huge man-goatee hair and, i dunno, some sort of stereotypical man-clothes.

First, Grand Magus' Kingslayer.

A pretty huge riff fest. Kind of like Black Sabbath with bigger balls and a much better vocalist. Pretty sweet lyrics, actually, but you don't care about that. To put it simply: Huge riffs, great vocals. Very manly, but still pretty accessible for all those who might be frightened by the presence of testosterone.

Link: http://rapidshare.com/files/31086829/Wolfs_Return_by_Wiseman.rar

Next, Unleashed- Where no Life Dwells. Excellent old school metal, more huge riffs, melodic without that whole Gothenburg stench attached to it (pretty sure this precedes that), and just a rather excellent CD all round. Plenty of variety and plenty of manliness.

Link: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SIWC9CFK

Now we're up to The Eye of Every Storm by Neurosis. There are going to be a lot of people (read: pussies) who will go 'Caspian, this is too heavy for me. I can't take this stuff'. Well, this is my compromise for this thread. Yes, this is really manly. It's effectively a group of big, burly men agonising over stuff. It's also totally fantastic, quite pretty but still with big testicles. Imagine Sigur Ros' () album, but with big riffs and a large muscly American dude singing instead of a strange androgynous elf.

Link: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AUAKFBZB

Two albums to go! This one is quite an excellent beast. This is Death is the Communion by High on Fire. I guess you could say it's a bit like a heavier Grand Magus. Huge gruff vocals, epic riffs, and a strange sort of exoticism (is that even a word?) that pervades throughout the whole album. You haven't heard 'huge riffs' until you've heard this album.

Link: http://www.zshare.net/download/35449325e3b5ba/

And finally, the epitome of excellent manly music: Dark Angel- Darkness Descends. This is flat out, brutal raw thrash stuff that will just blow your mind (and possibly make you blow your load?). Really fast, probably a lot heavier then anything else in this thread so don't listen to it first. First up this will probably just sound like a downtuned vacuum cleaner with pretty fast drums overdubbed, but more listens reveal that this is just insanely fast thrash with hundreds and hundreds of really excellent riffs. Excellent stuff. If you don't like this, then you are a metrosexual. Kill yourself.

I hope you all enjoyed this little sample of excellent music. I did this for the good of the board!

Edit - The High on Fire and Neurosis albums are great. Next time maybe just use the Sendspace thread?

I just though it'd be a good sort of thread? I dunno, there's plenty of other 'threads about a genre' going, why not do one about hugely awesome metal tunes?

lol talented songwriter.  :|

lol pretentious prick?

Anyway, I thought I'd add a few more albums to this whole 'big manly music' sort of thread. A man can't listen to metal all the time- he has to occasionally sit back, perhaps with a good quality beer in hand, and have some sort of rest and repose for whatever challenges lay ahead. With this in mind, I've uploaded some sort of variations on the folk genre for you all. None of that Sufjan crap here, just powerful, honest, and manly folk for those introspective times.

This one is Lashing the Rye by Harvestman It's made by a guy from Neurosis,  and it's excellent, so I thought I'd throw it in. Basically, this is some really nice folky drone stuff with plenty of studio trickery- a challenging but enjoyable and relaxing listen. Something for those times when you just want to sit around and stroke your beard.

Link: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZCFQOSP8

..And now for some manly-as Neofolk. This is The Hill of Crosses by Sol Invictus. There's plenty of good folky instrumentation, and some old and wise guy with a really thick english accent intones down words of wisdom for all of us mere mortals. According to the last.fm wiki, this guy left Death in June "To further pursue his magical studies", and when listening to this one can only conclude that this dude is now a super wise magician. Admittedly, his accent is pretty annoying, but whatever, it's sweet, no nonsense stuff that will make you more intelligent.

..It should be noted that the High on Fire and Dark Angel in those first few links weren't mine, but it's were I got them from, so I don't think they have any viruses. This Sol Invictus isn't mine either- although I've also had this on my comp with no bad side effects for some time.

If we're talking good folk here, Ulver's Kveldssanger needs a mention. A landmark release for the band and for folk in general. Often instrumental, but there are vocals they're quite amazing. The vocal layering (almost) puts the Beach Boys to shame, as a huge amount of multi-tracked Garms come out to sooth your heart and stuff. Excellent late night listening, a great album all round really.

http://rapidshare.com/files/38957685/Ulver_Kveldssanger.rar.html

If I get a positive response from what I've posted thus far, then I'll be back in a day or two with some more solid tunes that fit this theme. I'll probably go back to metal, though.

Quote
There's nowt wrong with posting some cool music, it's just phrased in a way that excludes our sisters.

That's valid, and of course people in the gentler gender are very much allowed to peruse these albums at their discretion. I'm sure they'll find something they'll like here. However, as with threads with a certain genre theme, these CDs have a certain gender theme. Perhaps girls will dislike this stuff, perhaps not- I don't really mind either way, but I'm aiming this at dudes who need some manlier music- I don't think that's a bad thing.

Pssst that's because he puts on a bad Irish accent in order to sound more folky. Also he was forced to leave DI6 because he was a member of the BNP at the time, something he has since described as 'probably the worst decision of my life' (http://www.tursa.com/message.html). Oh yes, Death in June, the same Death in June with albums banned in Germany, kicked someone out for being too right wing. Also, The Hill of Crosses itself is an anti-totalitarian song. THE MOAR YOU KNOW.

There are many obvious things that we are missing here, in this thread. We need old school metal of the type exemplified by Judas Priest, Saxon, Motorhead, Running Wild, Iron Maiden, Mercyful Fate et al, music so dripping with testosterone that it has been known to cause women in the front row to grow beards. We have mentioned Unleashed without mentioning Grave (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUkgUaKD188), Decapitated (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfRT5FZYI10), Entombed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jY6sqiA8gj0), Behemoth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2PDNyD9G0M) or countless other awesome death metal bands. We have gone into relaxed manliness without a breath of Nick Cave, Tom Waits or Johnny Cash, not to mention a few other acts in the neo-folk and post-industrial scene, where we start finding new definitions of manliness. Coil, for example, is quite plainly gay as hell, queer in a way that makes Boy George look like a young conservative, and yet at the height of their career Jhonny Balance would probably have thought nothing of drinking six litres of vodka and dry humping through a concrete wall to a medley of T-Rex songs. We haven't mentioned Cryptic Wintermoon, Ancient Rites, Finntroll...

Guys I think I need to make you some mixes.

Well, I've never said that this was an exhaustive list, just things that I think are cool and somewhat manly- along with being bands that most people haven't heard of. And stuff like Johnny Cash and Nick Cave? I thought it was obvious, really.

Regardless, I would enjoy some of your mixes! ..Just as long as you keep the amount of finntroll songs restrained.

I've never thought of Neurosis as being that manly myself. Heavy, yes, but not overwhelmingly male. Personally, when I'm thinking of bands where maleness is a key part of their make-up it's these boys that come to mind:

Neurosis's manliness is unquestionable. Lets compare it to a similiar band, say, Isis:

Also, lulz @ limp wrist.

Awesome stoner rock, old school metal, dudes like Nick Cave and Johnny Cash.

There are thousands of bands made up of large people with beards. Not all of them are male. What I was talking about was that Neurosis' music never seems to me to be concerned particularly with ideas of maleness. They're heavy but so what, that's not a specifically male aspect to music. And those two photographs show bands who look very similar. Moody expressions, dark clothing... the main difference seems to be that Isis are younger and have less middle-aged spread. Also, no Noothgrush shirt, which while not being anything to do with manliness is a deeply awesome item of clothing.

I did not bring up Limp Wrist for "lulz". Yeah, they're queer. So what? You think because someone's queer they're not a "real" man? If you think about it, queer bands (and by that I mean bands who make their sexuality an intrinsic part of their music) are more likely to be concerned with concepts of gender. Khar already mentioned Coil, an excellent example in my opinion. There's something extremely male about Coil's music. It's the same with Limp Wrist. "Brotherhood, brotherhood, we're all about that brotherhood." After all, they're a straight edge band. With straight edge, women are conspicuous by their absence. Traditionally songs which if written by, say, a metal band would have been about male/female relationships become about very intense relationships between men. Constant talk of being betrayed, stabbed in the back or brothers for life. Straight edge hardcore bands discuss male friendship (and in the case of Limp Wrist, Knifed et al, love) with an intensity and importance I have never come across elsewhere in music.

Another personal gay icon of mine I think deserves to be bought into this discussion:

Not to mention that, whilst being some of the most utterly balls to the wall shit ever written (peaking on the Painkiller album), Judas Priests music is riven with fantastically homoerotic themes. Hell, Judas Priest have written some of the best gay love songs ever. And when you start viewing the rest of metal through the lense of songs like 'Starbreaker' and 'Exciter', you can easily believe the view that there's a LOT of repressed homosexuality thrumming about in metal. I think it's literally just starting to get proper visibility in the metal community. I've met a few openly gay, les or bi metalheads, and they're almost all of my age or less, with a few noble exceptions. This is almost certainly related to the recent trends within the scene as a whole to being more left wing, more political and more intellectual (not of course saying that there weren't always big, influential bands that were political, intelligent and left wing: see Napalm Death, Carcass, Sabbat...) Just that these trends are moving across the board, even into black metal: though I'm dissapointed to say that the 'GLBT fans of black metal' group me and a friend started on last.fm folded due to lack of members, rainbow inverted cross and all.

Anyway, what were we talking about? Oh yeah, music that rocks rather than music that sucks! You know, driving on from this whole whatchamacallit, I don't really think hard-rocking music is about masculinity at all, but rather broader themes that are stereotypically associated with masculinity, like power and domination, combat and honour, etc. There's also a broadly masculine aesthetic to it in the sense of which artists are venerated: guitar HEROES, remember. It kinda sucks that in this day and age you still get that tired screed about female vocalists being little more than instruments, rather than full creative partners, something I've seen said about pretty much every single one of metals leading ladies. ANYWAY, I am working on a mix of music that is basically dripping with testosterone. I would try and fuck things up by making one with only bands that have female members, but I don't have enough of my music collection here at my student digs to make that concept good. Actually, I don't even really have all the male fronted tracks I need, but I'll manage.

That's probably a good summary of what this thread is about.

I should probably also point out that this isn't meant to be a homophobic thread or anything close to it. I don't care were you want to stick your dick, just don't be a wuss, know what I'm sayin'?

I guess I would also concede this. Admittedly, I'm quite ignorant of the whole straight edge scene and the values therein- hardcore really isn't my thing. Still, a band with a name like 'limp wrist' with a pink cover doesn't seem all that masculine. I guess don't judge a band by it's album cover etc..

Anyway, I am now going to upload some more.

This one is Doomriders- Black Thunder. I think it's a side project of a few guys from Converge, not sure. Anyway, a friend of mine described it as 'Muscle Car Rock' and that's a good description. All Music also nails it: 'Thin Lizzy mixed with Entombed'. This rocks hard, really quite aggressive and to borrow a phrase from Khar, it's 'dripping with testosterone'. Enjoy!

And this one is Earth's HEX: Or Printing in The Infernal Method. When I think Manliness, I think those cowboys in the old western movies- those dudes that have just lived it tough, out on the land for many years. This is basically a drone soundtrack to one of those movies- a very evocative album that brings up images of those desolate parts of the old west. It's very much an album of solitude. It's a real patience tester, but those of us who love the slo 'n' lo (like me) will totally dig this.

This isn't a dig at anyone but, maybe it is because i like dudes, and i like metal, but was this not blindingly obvious to everyone since ever?

I tend to disagree with this view, but I can see where you guys are coming from. Just because something is very masculine doesn't mean it's gay.

"We've got some horse tranquilizer for later. We've also got a horse, tranquilized for later. That's the nice thing about a chalet, you can sneak a tranquilized horse in there... Got a bit of Diazepam up my bum."

I think Jhonn would've found his death to be humorous, what with his name being "Balance" and all.

Guys I think I need to make you some mixes.
You really ought to.

I can't remember who it is in the Metal: A Headbangers Journey, possibly Dee Snider or Ronny James Dio, who claims they know personally of at least eight more big heavy metal musicians apart from Halford that are gay.

It was apparently filmed in a club in Bangkok, and has a cast of about forty almost certainly underage mostly naked dancing boys and male prostitutes.)

Fuck I do love Industrial music.

Worst thread ever.

I would tell you to 'go home and listen to Sufjan', but that would be a bit too harsh. No one should ever have to listen to Sufjan.

Anyway, In an attempt to stop my thread becoming a discussion of the homoerotic tendencies in industrial music, I've got a few more albums for you all.

This is something a little bit different, but it's still excellent. This is Forefather's 'Deep into Time', an excellent piece of 'anglo-saxon metal' (read: Black Metal with English themes) that's very much about battle, honor, and a return to manlier times. Don't let the black metal description turn you off- this is quite well produced, and even quite melodic, although it's still quite primal and fierce nonetheless. An excellent album all round, really.

Link: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=5PGHDAZ7

This one here is Hellyeah's s/t. None more manly!!

Heh, or perhaps not. Khar's mentioned Judas Priest before in this thread and posting some is always a good idea. I think their best is British Steel, but it seems that lots of people disagree with that. I don't have Painkiller on this computer so I guess Screaming for Vengeance will do. This is quite an excellent album. Halford's in great form as per usual, and while it's not as consistent imo as British Steel, tunes like Electric Eye and You've Got Another Thing.. are excellent tunes indeed, though (Take these) Chains stinks real bad. Anyway, a pretty good album, and owning a Judas Priest album is compulsory for anyone who has a penis (and for those without. everyone needs some Judas Priest.)

Maybe. Speaking of some Manowar, here's Sign of the Hammer - meant to add this to my last post but forgot. Most people find it hard to get past Manowar's posing and general ridiculousness- but at the same time that's why I love them, and that's why I've uploaded them. The thing I love about these guys is that there isn't a hint of irony about Manowar- from what I can tell they've never said that they did it 'for the lulz' or anything. Irony is for pussies, and Manowar are anything but. And while people may laugh at them, I bet no one's actually said it to their faces..

Anyway, Manowar would just be a long running joke if they didn't have some excellent songs. And luckily, they do  have some excellent songs. It's all really quite epic and rousing (arousing?), hell, I think that even the ballads are pretty good. Plus, these guys seem like a great bunch that really care about their fans.

To sum up: A ridiculous but nonetheless awesome image, and some great songs.

Eh, NDH/"Tanz-Metall" is metal, maybe too mainstream to be Metal to some purists, but they are a silly bunch to begin with (of course I take personal offense at metalcore/nu-metal being called metal...).  Fitting description, though.

Dude, their industrial rock. Compare with a real industrial metal band, like The CNK, or Aborym, or even popular examples like Ministry or early Fear Factory, and then compare them with bands like KMFDM, Oomph!, Hanzel Und Gretyl etc. and you'll see what I mean. Rammstein have some metal influences, in some songs, on some albums, but that don't make them metal, anymore than having folk influences makes Finntroll a folk band.

Jeez.

You'd probably love the masculine intensity of Codeine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaRrVFzIS5Y) as well then.
Or the sheer adrenaline of Low (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvufaL5B_iM).

Why is all the music I love so utterly tedious?

Nothing wrong with tedious music. I quite enjoyed the new Low, and I'm a huge drone doom fan, which is the definition of tedious-ness.

Post by: KharBevNor on 07 Oct 2007, 17:23
Yeah, they don't put a decent solo in all their songs, which is a shame, and the solos they do have are nothing special. It's the bands major failing. I'd rather introduce people to them with a track like Wykydtron or Axes of Evil, which probably has one of the best opening lines of a ridiculous metal song: "HARK! Our scout has reached the gate/bringing news of war...", if that distinction hadn't been taken already by the first track from the 'Advance and Vanquish' album, Fear on the Bridge (Upon the Boiling Sea Part 1), which begins with the immortal lines: "TORMENTS! From the pits of HELL! In the seas where pirates dwell!". Though I must say, Axes of Evil gains lots of bonus points for containing other lyrical gems like:

"NO! You must not seek the blades!
It's said that they are cursed!
Possess you if your found,
To the Dread Lord they are bound!
Cutting flesh for him to eat,
Bloody raw lucifer meat.
Peril awaits you in the fjords,
We cannot lose you to the...
AXES OF EVIL!
STRONG NOT FEEBLE!
AXES OF EVIL!
COME ON!"

Hey look, I found a load of those things on Youtube where they take a song and just put it over a still image or video game footage or something:

Axes of Evil (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pogSMTonwIQ)

Fear on the Bridge (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-gkTac17hg)

It's not really about being an arsehole. Obviously most of the posts I've been making in this thread aren't entirely serious, but going "Ok so maybe you want some hard rocking music, maybe not it's your choice really" just isn't a good way to do a thread. In basically every other thread (excepting that Conor Oberst one) I've been a pretty reasonable chap methinks. Nothing wrong with being passionate about what you like and dislike.

Also, I fail to see what's wrong with elitism. I have pretty eclectic tastes (post-rock to metal to to jazz and whatever) but that doesn't mean I can't be discriminating. And considering that most people here (not all, but Most)  seem to be of the whole "JUST LISTEN TO IT WITH AN OPEN MIND KTHX" persuasion, someone's got to balance it out.
