Ok, so I'm embarking on a quest to make a somewhat all-encompassing mix of anything that showcases a violin. Nothing is off-limits.
So far I've got something from:
Bela Fleck's tales from the acoustic planet vol II. (prog bluegrass)
Mahavishnu Orchestra (jazz fusion)
Estradasphere (Gypsy Jazz/Thrash)
Whiskey Blanket (classically trained violinist+rap)
Stephan Grappelli (1930s French hot club swing)
Something off of Mark O'Connor's new retrospective album
Ideas? No holds barred, if I didn't get that across.

Cruxshadows - Cassandra. It's got synths and violins and stupid hair what more could you want.
-
Look up a band called Talkdemonic. They like to call themselves "Folktronica."
-
Dirty Three.
This pretty much all you need.
-
Check out the band Raxhel's. They use mostly classical instruments, including a lot of violin. Also, Lux Aeterna from the Requiem for a Dream OST and pretty much anything off The Fountain OST will have lots of nice violin work.

+ the violinist is hottttttt and played Francesca in the Decemberists video for O Valencia
-
Death By Blonde - DeVotchKa.
(the end!)
-
Scrap the mix idea, and just put both of Final Fantasy's albums on one CD.
-
Subway to Sally?
(Never understood why a German folk metal band has and indie pop name)
-
Keep 'em coming, feel free to host the tracks you have in mind.
-
final fantasy - this is the dream of win & regine
and some more, everyone should listen to him... forever
it should be perfect for a violin mix, as every sound except his voice is made with his violin (there is a little bit of keyboard on some tracks, but not this one) it's damn impressive live too.
and some andrew bird... i'd say nervous tick motion of the head to the left, as it's my favourite.
actually, that's not so violinny, try heretics or scythian empires
-
"Hummingbird," by Wilco.

Open with this piece (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Threnody_to_the_Victims_of_Hiroshima).
-
Oh man. Maybe save that for last dude.
-
I think this might kill any indie cred I tried to pin onto my messenger bag way back in the eigth grade, but I feel like Patrick Wolf would be an interesting addition to the mix. The man loves his strings.

OK so I'm a little bit confused by how this could be attempting to be an all-encompassing mix and nobody has mentioned any of Corelli's twelve sonatas or any of Bach's violin concerti or for fuck's sake Beethoven's violin concerto or FOR FUCK'S SAKE BEETHOVEN'S STRING QUARTETS.
I am calm, what are you talking about? I'm pretty sure caps was warranted there considering, you know, it's the best music ever produced by the human race. No, sorry that's unfair. The greatest single work of art created by the human race. That's better.
Anyway, to fix this, I suggest all of those. If you don't want the mix to blow out to being several days long, I recommend either the 12th or 7th Corelli sonata, either the A minor a E major of Bach's concerti (if you only want one movement, choose the third from the A minor cos really everyone should have realised that there was no point continuing to write violin music after that), the third movement from Beethoven's concerto, the 'Heilige dankgesang' (the third movement) from the op 132 quartet and the finale of the op 131.
Also you probably want some of the warhorses like Mendelssohn's E minor concerto (the third movement is pretty much the happiest thing ever), Brahms's concerto (if you have time use the first movement, otherwise don't use it at all), and the finale from Bruch's.
That's the 'standard' repertoire right there. If you want all-encompassing it's best not to ignore the first three hundred years of the instrument's history.

On the frontpage this thread's title is cut off after "I am making a violin". That would have been pretty great.
So yeah, Dirty Three.

Hah, yeah. You have a point, but this mix is actually for a girl who is a spectacular classical violinist who burned out on it. The idea is to show her all the other stuff the violin can do, so standard classical repertoire would be kind of pointless. I play fiddle/jazz and other stuff on the violin and I'm trying to widen her horizons.
P.S. The last classical thing I played on the violin was one of the bach unaccompanied sonatas and partitas. It's kickass stuff, I'm not arguing with that.
-
Ooooooh. Right
Perhaps specify this at the start next time? 8-)

Yeah, my bad. Nice list all the same.

Dirty Three, Dirty Three, Dirty Three.
Dirty Three.
-
For excellent violin work, I think the presto movement of Summer from Vivaldi's Four Seasons is pretty excellent.

ok, ok! I didn't read all the posts. I'm sorry! Surely it's not *that* bad a thing.
-
No, but it deserved to be emphasised in big ugly letters so that from now on nobody could possibly skim past it.
Also, casull: Alison Krauss.
Also also, you're going to need at least three Dirty Three tunes on this mix: one to show off Warren Ellis's pizzicato playing, one to show off his slow playing, and one to show off his feedback freak-out playing.
-
"Hummingbird," by Wilco.
And if for some ridiculous reason this doesn't catch your fancy, there's always "Jesus, Etc."

Mmm, yeah, good idea. I have that live 2-disc album she did a few years back somewhere, I'll have to dig it out and rip it.

CODA (http://www.codaplanet.com/)- An Australian band, line up is: Violin, Viola, Vibes and drums, along with some samples. Very good.
Taraf de Haidouks for Romanian Gypsy stuff.
Gogol Bordello- kind of punky/gypsy/rocky stuff.
Also, if you're going to have Stefan Grapelli, make sure it's with Django.
You could also try some of the Shakti albums, the indian/fusion band John McLaughlin did after Mahavishnu. They have Lakshminarayana Shankar on violin, he's a motherfucker*.
*Technical term for a very good musician.

THERE IS ONLY ONE BAND YOU COULD POSSIBLY NEED (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlo7F1Zd-x0)
I'd recommend one of their original tracks, they showcase all the members much better. Maybe Polkageist!, Spinning Jenny, Great Blow For a Day Job, The Sinful Ensemble, Fainting By Numbers or The Womb of the Worm. I can upload a selection if you want, Skyclad can be pretty hard to find, even illegally.
-
I was going to suggest Still Spinning Shrapnel, personally.
-
My favourite slow playing dirty three track is everything's fucked- use that.
-
There was that Eels live with strings album from a couple of years ago. I'd go with Bus Stop Boxer for atmospheric dreariness.
-
One More Cup of Coffee / Valley Below is a good choice too.
I am basing this off of the performance of this song on the Rolling Thunder Review Tour (Bootleg Series Vol. 5).
Warren Zevon's Genius and TMBG's S-E-X-X-Y are funk/soul-ish songs with violin factoring in kinda' heavily, though the former is more representative, the latter only uses it for riffs, really.
Chieftans is good, Great Big Sea is good, Dave Matthews Band might be OK too.
BUT WHY HAS NOBODY MENTIONED KRONOS QUARTET?
-
There are lots of songs by the Penguin Cafe Orchestra that fit your bill: Music for a Found Harmonium would be a good one.
-
Scrap the mix idea, and just put both of Final Fantasy's albums on one CD.

Elle Osborne (her first name, for some reason, is pronounced "Ellie") is a really good English folk singer and fiddle player. Sometimes both at once. She released an album a few years ago that was almost entirely singing and/or fiddle playing. Unfortunately neither of the songs from the album available on her website feature her fiddle playing, but she's worth checking out all the same. Apparently she's also teamed up with someone else to form the band Lindsey Woolsey, who have a last.fm (http://www.last.fm/music/Lindsey+Woolsey) page, though I haven't listened to them so I don't know how much of Osborne's fiddle features in their music..
-
Holy SHIT, that thin lizzy cover is good, khar. I have given both the original and mastodon's cover a lot of plays recently. If you want to toss up an album or two, I'd love it. There's some in the sendspace thread, but I think it's probably expired by now.
-
If you could squeeze a Final Fantasy live show on there as well, do that.
-
You might like Emilie Autumn. I think she calls her particular music style "victoriandistrual". Granted, her songs are a mix of violin and viola, with the viola taking the limelight, but still! That counts. Right?
(Not purely viola/in. It's a bit technoish. Her early stuff is much more viola/in heavy. Her newer stuff has plenty, but much more of the other instruments.)
-
Korpi-fucking-klaani.
-
maybe someday- isb
-
Sweet! As a violin performance major in college, I wish you luck with this.
I'd like to suggest a personal favorite jazz violinist - Stuff Smith. He has several cd's out there from a while ago, just an amazing jazz musician. Very Miles Davis'esque
Maybe take a look at Tracy Silverman's stuff too - he used to be a member of the Turtle Island String Quartet if you've heard of it, it used (and still does) play very progressive modern/jazz influenced pieces. I actually got to see Tracy live at a summer camp, where he even gave a masterclass to the people interested. Plays and has written several songs which are totally solo by himself, just using a looping pedal.
Another amazing electric violinist, Ed Alleyne-Johnson. One of the most awesome pieces I've ever heard is by him, check it out from the youtube vid - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUO6kYLb6As
And then of course my own band back home.. I play an electric, we don't have anything recorded on the net though :p
There are a ton of others I could probably suggest, just lemme know if you still need :)
By the way, if you don't mind, let me know when it's done and maybe hook me up with some, I'd love a good violin mix myself :-D
-
I HIGHLY recommend Skeleton Breath.
Also, the song "The Ballad of Jody Frosty" by Masters of Reality.
