Now I'm not an enormous fan of Boris but I do think they're pretty cool. They're playing a free show in the chapel here at Bard on the 27th and I'm wondering two things:
1. Should I go? and 2. What should I expect from them live?
Anyone have good/bad/ok experiences with them live or in general?
-
Go, and I'd expect them to be god awfully LOUD.
GO!
(I think Bard is kinda near where I am? Maybe I could go if I had a ride)
-
Get earplugs. And backup earplugs.
-
When I've seen them they've not actually been all that devastatingly loud. I was pretty near the speakers and despite my aversion to excessive volume I was feeling fine.
Boris are a hard band to predict. Sometimes they'll deliver monstrous drone and feedback, at other gigs they'll be out to rock as hard as humanly possibly and sometimes they'll give you a mix of the two. It's all good though, you should definitely go. I predict a good time, the same as I do for when I see them at ATP this winter.
Oh, and if they have any vinyl for sale buy it. Then you can flog it on Ebay and fleece the fanboys, I think my Boris picture discs are worth several times what I paid for them now which is always a comfort in times of economical strife.
-
Definitely go. Particularly as it's free!
I saw them back in May with Sunn O))) and thought it was pretty damn awesome. Their drummer is totally insane.

See, this is what youre doing wrong.
-
When did this band get so popular? I have admittedly never listened to them, but I have watched their meteoric rise over the last six months from like "no one knows" to "hipsters love" and I don't see when it happened, really.
-
I threw one of their albums onto the sendspace thread today if you want to check it out, Kieffer.
-
Free service was exceeded. I still don't get why people use sendspace when mediafire is so much faster and more reliable.
-
I say go. Since it's free and you (I assume) have no other plans, what's there to lose? The show might not be great, but it's not like you had to pay for it. And if it's completely horrid you can just leave in the middle.

Have they? Among fans of the heavy stuff Boris have been very much the in thing for years, and I don't really pay attention to the music press so I didn't realise they'd gained widespread popularity.

American release of Pink, I think.
-
I remember the New York Times had an article on them..
Now I heard about this show too, is it Bard students only? I want to see them and the Bowery Suck my Ballsroom is not all ages.
-
Bard is such a shitty school.
-
Why does Bard suck cock?
(I'm curious because I have no idea where I want to go, and places not to go are welcome, with advice.)
-
Even if I didn't go here, I'd argue that Bard is pretty great school. It's often ranked among the best liberal arts schools in the country and it has an acceptance rate of around 25% which, it seems to me, makes it not overly shitty. The fact that I do go here and know what it's like makes me a much more reliable source and I can say from experience that it's pretty awesome. Even if the school was shitty, we get tons of good bands here. Gowns played last night and it was fucking phenomenal. Anyway, I believe the show is for students only, but I couldn't guarantee it.
-
Go.
Expect pure rock action. Boris are not to be missed, they are a phenomenal live act.

It's in the ass-end middle of nowhere(you don't realize how far 3 hours from the city by train is until the first time you want to travel it), they have great academics but like every east cost liberal arts school there is such a drug culture it's depressing, and most of the population maintains a level of hipster douchebaggieness even I find stunning.
-
What Kieffer really means is that he didn't get into Bard and is kinda sad about it.
-
Nope. I did get into Bard, and decided I didn't want to go, because I really disliked the school and the way I felt when I was there!
Nice try though!
-
Cheers!
Anyway, to hop back on topic, I've been getting really into Boris over the past week or two.

Well it is kinda in the middle of no where but, since you didn't go, you really can't comment on the drug culture which, in actuality, is far lower than Bard's reputation suggests. I know some people who do drugs, I know plenty who don't. I don't know anyone who does hard drugs. Similarly, I know very few 'hipsters.' Sure, you see some around but, again, it's reputation does not accurately represent the real student population. Please don't base your arguments on hearsay and reputation, Kieffer, simply because you'll often be wrong (as is the case here).
Anyway, I too have been listening to a lot more Boris. I've downloaded several albums I didn't have and I like them more every time I listen. This is a very good thing. These guys (and girl) are fucking intense. I can't wait for the show now.
