Title: Audacity vs Soundbooth

I've been using Audacity for audio editing for years, but an upcoming voice-based project has me doubting if Audacity is up to the task. Can anyone who's used both Audacity and Adobe Soundbooth comment on differences or advantages? I have the opportunity to get Soundbooth for free, but I'm not sure if it's worth my time.

Soundbooth is better only really in the number and quality of filters and whatnot you get. It may also support surround sound mixing, I can't remember. The interface is also maybe slightly more efficient, if you're used to it. Audacity, when paired with a decent sound-card and maybe an external four-track, if that's your thing, is probably up to most tasks, and if you've got experience with it, I say stick to it.

What exactly are you planning?

I have no real experience with Soundbooth but a lot of people have complaints about Adobe's software in general; personally I'm okay with it when I get it with other stuff and there isn't like a decent freeware alternative. For example, I'm not going to switch from Photoshop to a freeware program.

So if it's something like other Adobe programs you might have to worry about bloated software and relatively high load times.

Without more specifics though I might suggest you stick with Audacity. If you could explain your project a little better I could probably evaluate how effective Audacity would be.

Mostly I'll be taking audio clips (from a soundproof room, big boom mic) and removing any latent noise (I know Audacity handles it well enough), then boosting and replotting it if necessary; some of the voices might have to altered significantly (ie. custom EQ masks, et al). From what you guys have said, I might be best off sticking with Audacity and some of the filter packs I've found wandering around the interwebs, I didn't realize they were so evenly-matched. Thanks!

Audacity is insanely powerful for a freeware program. I really can't think of anything else quite on its level.
