Title: I have lost my way on my quest for awsome (edited)
Post by: qiZzer on 07 Nov 2007, 16:54
I don't know enough about music, i know a fare bit but  im lost. I love all kinds of indie music but im in the search of weird lesser known tunes. The problem is everyone i know just listen to crappy main stream pop, punk or worse yet rap.  I have found my favorite bands wolf parade,Sunset Rubdown decembrsits, destroyer, polyphonic spree, modest mouse, asylum street spankers (guilty pleasure) and others through automated services such as Pandora/ituens, by chance and sound tracks and now im stuck in a rut. There are three basic things all band I like must have for me to like...

1. there has to be lyrics (i know hate me if you must)
2. song must be under 10 minutes
3. songs have to have structure

Im no newbie but can any of you out there in cyber space help me find my way  with some kick ass recommendations? :?

Speaking of The New Pornographers, you should definitely check them out.  Also, Stars and Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, Broken Social Scene would be a good choice and if you like them you would probably fancy Kevin Drew's work.  I'm not saying you'll like them all, or any of them, but you may.

Why do people even mention Built To Spill without recommending Jets To Brazil?
Title: Re: I have lost my way on my quest for awsome (edited)

I fail to really connect the two in my mind...  Having said that, Jets to Brazil are better.

You don't have to really recommend JTB to people anymore, just imply it.

They are my favourites as well (more or less ) and I had the same problem until i found the Dears, try No Cities Left or Orchestral Pop Noir Romantique the latter of which is hard to come by. Also try Widow City, which is their most accessible and is the only thing i've been listening to for the past few days, by the Fiery Furnaces and The Execution Of All Things by Rilo Kiley.

I like how you say one of your favorite bands is The Decemberists, but then under one of your music requirements, you say the song must be under 10 minutes.

well, I know so little about music I will be laughed off this board for sure, but...

The Smiths
The Builders and The Butchers
Muse
Beirut
Gogol Bordello

Most of it probably doesn't even count as indie... oh well.

The Decemberists are my favorite band, too!

most wasnt indie i know

muse is really good
erm...
the smiths and stone roses obviously
Aztec Camera
Orange juice are good
Pavement
avoid dinosaur jr unless you're 11
i like soundgarden
erm jesus lizard are ok
June of '44
obv Mogwai

i dunno if thats ok with you

you need an education.  Allow me to correct you.

Muse sucks
Stone Roses are not a band I listen to, and neither are the Smiths, but there are people here who like them, so I have no opinion
Aztec Camera sucks
never heard Orange Juice (are you just searching randomly through genres?)
Pavement are good, I agree
Dinosaur Jr are great, and your statement about them is ignorant and retarded and stupid
I don't really like Soundgarden, Abba are better
Jesus Lizard are great
June of '44 (see about Orange Juice)
obv Mogwai.  obv Mogwai.  obv Mogwai. OBV MOGWAI

Your selection is disturbingly random

He mentioned Prince at least.  Prince used to be pretty great.  And Pink Floyd put out some pretty wonderful albums.

Arvo Part

Is this the same Arvo Pärt as the minimalist composer who creates pieces which do not suit what was being asked for in any way at all?

They're kinda not exactly the same style as what you listen to.
But that doesn't mean they're not awesome
