Less than three days!
Reviews are in and they're very positive. Many are likening it to Super Mario 64, saying that's it's nearly that good. If you can be "nearly as good" as Sm64, then you're pretty much a lock for being an AWESOME game.
Anyone had a chance to play a demo at all?
-
Do they have demos? Maybe I'll check out my EB.
-
I have my copy preordered online with two-day shipping, so I should get it by Wednesday. I'm gonna have to split time between it and Fire Emblem, but aside from Mass Effect this has been my most anticipated game all year.
-
Same here. With Galaxy gettign to the house Tuesday, and Mass Effect coming in the week after, I'm not going to be getting anything at all done for weeks.
-
there goes any hope of me passing this semester
-
I preordered this on Amazon. I wonder when it is coming? Hopefully Thursday because I have to give Lincoln's Second Inaugural speech on Thursday and I will memorize JACKSHIT when this comes out.
-
I'm going to get it in fifteen minutes, I hope.
-
I called my Gamestop where I have it reserved and they're not getting it until tomorrow, so I'm stuck with GHIII until then.
-
Reading some of the reviews for this game, I am absolutely convinced that this game was the number one reason for the delay of Smash Bros. Brawl. I was looking forward to Galaxy enough, thinking it looked like a fun little distraction to kill time when I got bored of Smash. I'm finding that this is a common viewpoint, people just didn't really care all that much because it was overshadowed by Smash Bros. Now that SSBB is off into February and people can really look at Galaxy without thinking about Brawl, it really shows through to how big this title is.
Sure, it gives them extra time to fine-tune Brawl, but with Galaxy not having to fight its own studio for sales this winter, this game's press and sales potential seem to have skyrocketed. Personally, I planned on asking someone to pick it up for me for Christmas, but I really don't think I'm going to make it through the week now.

I was just at my EB and the game doesn't get released in Canada for an additional two days. What the fuck? The release party in NYC was last night.
Thanks, Nintendo! I sure don't feel like a complete dumbass.

I think you're being paranoid. I'm sure Brawl's delay was completely independent of Galaxy, because with all the stuff they're cramming into the game (including online play, which on the Wii is relatively rare), there must be a ton of testing and stuff that they need to do. I'm pretty sure Nintendo wasn't thinking, "Oh man, I'm worried this Mario game isn't going to sell enough."
-
I think paranoid is a strong word. I've always considered paranoia to be more of a negative feeling. I genuinely do think the proximity of the two titles had more than a little bit to do with the delay. I don't think it's a bad thing, though. If that was any part of Nintendo's strategy, it was both smart financially (As the two would've done little more than cannibalize each other, being in direct competition for sales) and for the consumer overall (Most people planning to buy either are likely buying both, I sure as Hell was not really keen on the idea of buying both so close to each other and was likely to sacrifice Galaxy for the sake of owning Brawl). With all the recent announcements as well of the insane hype Galaxy is suddenly receiving, when was the last time you genuinely heard someone complain about the Brawl delay (And Kotaku users don't count, Bryan, they'll bitch about anything)?
-
Personally, I was equally excited for both titles, but I think a lot of people were disappointed by the Brawl delay. I wasn't, but that's because I play games all the time. If you're somebody who only buys games every once and a while and therefore a crowded holiday season doesn't matter to you, if Smash Brothers was one of your favorite titles then the delay would probably suck.
But I mean, Smash Brothers sells really well and all, but Mario is still Mario and it's the best selling game franchise on the planet. I suppose if Grand Theft Auto or Halo (or even Super Smash Brothers) keep going for another 15 years they might catch up, but until that happens there's not a whole lot quite as monumental as a new non-spinoff Mario game.
-
Seriously, why am I not playing this game?
The more I think about it the angrier I get.
-
You and me both. I should be hopping around Airships to a loud bass drum right now.
-
TWO DAYS HAUGAHALAGHAL
Although, it is not that bad for me because I am playing Fire Emblem like a man obsessed. Seriously, I got the game on Thursday morning and I already have 25 hours on my save file.
-
I've got to wait until the weekend. I really can't afford to buy it yet.
-
damn, got off the phone with the local EB Games manager and he tells me it will be in tomorrow around 12:30
I guess it comes with some sort of special coin
-
TWO DAYS HAUGAHALAGHAL
Although, it is not that bad for me because I am playing Fire Emblem like a man obsessed.
Plus, at least it got released in your country on the right date. God.
-
I want to go buy this but I just got VF5 and Zack & Wiki.
Daaaangit!
-
Apparently Amazon ran out so mine will be here on the 20th. I wanted to cancel the order and buy it in a shop but my dad thought that this was silly so I gave up. I'm sort of angry, I ordered a long time ago. I feel like I deserve some sort of compensation?
EDIT: The site claims that they are in stock and that you can get it by Thursday if you order now. I call bullshit and I am going to investigate.
EDIT2: Ever faithful Kotaku tells me that I got fucked (http://kotaku.com/gaming/ouch/amazon-delaying-super-mario-galaxy-pre+orders-322112.php).
-
Amazon did the same thing to me when I ordered Metroid Prime 3.
It's pretty much bull.
-
I just got the same message and I pre-ordered the first week they had a entry for it up back when they didn't have a picture yet. Annoys the hell out of me. But then again, last time this happened I still got it within 24 hours after my original Expected Delivery date.
-
I'm certainly doing something about it. I'm in the worst possible place right now, with the paper coming out next week, December SATs fast approaching, ski team beginning to rear its ugly head, and a ridiculous workload as well... all I want is to sit back with my wii for some quality Mario entertainment.
-
I've only gotten 4 stars so far (the training galaxy, and the first subsequent one). Um. It's money well spent. I would pay six times as much as I did for twice the level design I've gotten so far. That's how awesome it is. There's a little section where you collect music notes that go out on a path, and they play the Mario Underground theme as you hit them. Get them all, and a 1-up mushroom appears. I did it multiple times because I loved to hear the song. It's unfortunate that I, like Ally, am also totally bogged down with homework. I definitely won't be beating this until next year, it's that bad.
-
I get my copy tomorrow morning! I am super excited.
-
Fucking hell, my girlfriend ordered this on next day shipping (15 dollars) from amazon for my birthday, and its not goign to be here till literally a week from tomorrow. Now were going to play it over thanksgiving break. Stilly really sucks.
-
WHY THE FUCK DOES CANADA HAVE TO WAIT ANOTHER DAY
JESUS CHRIST IT'S NOT LIKE WE'VE BEEN DICKS TO YOU NINTENDO
IF I LIVED CLOSE TO YOU RIGHT NOW I WOULD JSUSTA BOTTLE THE SHIT OUT OF YOUR BULIDING YOU COCKSUCKERS
GIVE ME MY ITALIAN PLUMBER ALREADY YOU BASTARDS
-
I'm too poor, I must wait until Christmas in hope..
If I don't end up with it then, I'll rob a bank, and buy it. :|
-
The game is AMAZING.
Basically it goes like this.
Super Mario Galaxy:Super Mario 64 :: Super Mario Brothers 3:Super Mario Brothers
It's so good. Design is wonderful, production values are through the roof. They wanted this game to be good, and it is. It's slightly disorienting at first with some of the sphere worlds, but you get used to it quick. And the normal platforming levels are top-notch so far. Amazing game indeed.

0bsessions: Bad news for (Insert girl here)
valley_parade: Yeah?
0bsessions: Mario Galaxy is out
valley_parade:Oh god
I saw a commerical for that.
0bsessions: She's not gonna get laid again until I get done with it
-
oh my god it's so much fun
-
I am so cracking open my copy as soon as I finish this logic homework. I think my desperation has created an epiphany where I suddenly understand how indirect proofs work. Seriously, I was looking at it last night and it might as well have been in Greek (well, completely in Greek). I get my delivery a few hours ago and suddenly it's all making sense.
-
and who says video games aren't educational?
god, i wish i had a Wii so i could be smart like you. also, i really want this game.
edit: i just noticed that i capitalized "Wii" and not "God". Priorities, I guess?
-
THOU SHALT HOLD NO FALSE IDOLS BEFORE PEACH
-
This game is pretty fun IMO.
-
this game makes me glad that I bought a Wii
-
This game is far too much fucking fun for my own good.
-
Fuck all ya'll that already have this game with a broken broomstick.
-
if it makes you feel any better it is really fun :(
-
I just got Star #20 and I am having a blast. It's really a ton of fun.
-
I have to wait until the 20somethingth when it gets released in Australia. I WANT IT NOW.
-
I am on star 13-14 or so, but I went back to Fire Emblem.
-
The reasons to get a Wii are really starting to stack up.
problem:
Watching the add for the Wii metroid game
Me: "I must admit a Wii does look pretty cool"
Mum: "You can have one.....if you want to live somewhere else."
It proves how tempting it is when I actually considered this option.
-
My friends and I played Galaxy last night. We quickly ran into the problem of it being too awesome and all three of us wanting to play. The Co-Star option is ridiculously and unexpectedly fun and useful, but that still left one person out.
So we split the first player into two people. One person with the nunchuk, one with the remote.
It was frantic, crazy, and forced all three of us to work together as an awesome single Mario force. It was incredibly fun.
-
grumblegrumble
-
between play this game and going to work, not enough hours in the day.
the game its like all kinds of awesome, its one the best mario games ever.
-
Man. It really is.
It's like...I feel like things should be less awesome by this point in the game (fourth observatory). That I should've seen everything by now and everything else should be more difficult variations on the same theme. But it's not! Every new galaxy is just...NEW! There's always more stuff to find!
Also, the references to previous Mario games are waaaay more awesome in this one than usual, like Bowser's Airship Armada from SMB3 (complete with remixed version of the same music) or just tiny things like the pumpkin Goombas in the Ghost House galaxy, a throwback to Super Mario World after you beat the Special area.
So much love.
-
Johnny, Nagash, Squawk, Bryan, Oz and Rodger can all kiss my pale, hairy, Mario Galaxyless until tomorrow evening ass.
-
You are just jealous.
-
ouch, left out of someone elses hate
still, the game is awesome, cept I really hate the sand level
-
BK, I didn't notice you'd procured it.
I will destroy you and everything that you have ever loved.
Man. If Superboy Prime were here, he could punch the walls of my room until a copy of Super Mario Galaxy just continuity errored its way into my hands...
-
So this is better than Super Mario Sunshine I gather.
GIVE ME A WII.
Please...
-
I am currently playing with my fiance. Life is good again.
Obsessions, should I go into great detail about how ridiculously fun this game is? Cause it's fun. Awesome fun.
-
BK, I didn't notice you'd procured it.
I will destroy you and everything that you have ever loved.
oh you big softy, I love you too
I really hate the fourth worlds boss level, stupid gravity puzzles
-
I preordered my copy on Friday. It comes out in Australia on the 29th! EEEEEEEEEEEEE
-
It came yesterday, I have about 25 stars so far. AHHH ADDICTING
-
44 Stars bitches. And yea, this game is soo much fun. The spherical worlds force you to think in creative ways, and the gameplay is just a blast. Much better than Sunshine.
-
I'm at 50 stars.
I have to take a break this week, though, I'm busy as hell.
-
I'm at 80, but I'm taking a break myself. I probably won't complete this game before I fly home on Wednesday where my sweet, sweet copy of Mass Effect awaits me. Still, whenever I need a break from shooting aliens I will go back for some fun Mario times.
-
I'm considering buying a Wii just so I can play this game. I have $550 sitting in my drawer right now... Unfortunately I don't think my flat is big enough for the amount of movement I've found the Wii requires and I was planning on spending that money on a new tattoo... DILEMMA!
Edited for awful 2am spelling.
-
I'm telling everyone I want a Wii for Christmas just so I can play this damn game.

How do you guys afford all these games? I'm looking at you Johnny and Storm Rider... you're both students are you not? I dunno how much they cost in the states but games here are about $99 NZD which is about $65 USD... My rent is $140 a week, about $90USD, HOW DO YOU BUY SO MANY GAMES AND AFFORD TO LIVE?
Tell me your secrets.
-
Well, I worked part-time for 3 years in high school and saved up a lot of money. Also, I really don't spend money on much else. I wasn't like everyone else in my high school who spent money on alcohol and pot. Plus, I live on campus so I don't have rent. Well, I do, but it's all included in my housing fees, which I don't pay myself.
-
Gaming in various forms is my main hobby (probably to the point it might be considered a lifestyle) and I don't spend my money on much else other than bills and rent.
Basically, you have to be "that" kid that got the shit kicked out of him in grade/middle/high school because you played video games before it was cool. It's glamorous I know.
-
I live at home.
-
Ah. Fine then. Have perfectly sensible logical reasons....
-
(Pssst. They're full of shit. They're both war profiteers)
-
Jon, didn't your mother ever tell you anything about sticking to your promises?
Hopefully she already did, anyway, because she doesn't articulate well when she's been set on fire.
-
The unfortunate thing is that in this situation Bryan is the "good cop."
-
Obsessions, I am jealous. That has just totally knocked my 50" plasma out of the league.
-
grumblegrumble
.....crap, I forgot to buy the damned leg of beef. *LoZ Referance*
To maintain topic. I wish for a wii now, but wouldn't you know it. I can't fucking find one.
-
Oh, I love the demand for the Wii. Last night, I practically got off on telling a girl who visited with my friend Cesar why she wasn't going to get a Wii this holiday season.
"I"m buying a Wii in the next couple of weeks."
"Ha! Yeah, sure you are."
"No, really. I've got the money and everything."
"Oh, I don't doubt it. The thing is, the Wii is presently in just as high demand as last Christmas being the top gift two years in a row. Now that it's officially the Holiday shopping period at the end of the week, you're not going to get a Wii without having to camp out and you don't appear to be physically built for a twelve hour stay in front of Toys R' Us in the cold New England winter. But hey! Good luck to you!"
I swear, it was like telling a four year old there's no Santa Clause and then punching them in the stomache.
-
Wow, that was as mean as buying her one yourself and then pissing on it in front of her. Bravo, good sir.
-
Oh, man. I wish I could just throw $250 away like that. I know just the person to do that to...
-
I wish I could play Mario Galaxy on a giant projected screen.
*Is jealous*
-
Standing taaaaaaall
-
I have to wait until Xmas
If its as good as this thread makes it sound I will not be playing anything else for a week, at least, after I get it.
I wish I had moneys so I didn't have to wait.
-
somewhere between 80-85 stars at the moment, god damn is this a fun game. and on that note, man fuck that monkey ball rolling shit. the whole joystick thing just doesnt work well enough when it isnt a real joystick.
-
Played this last night. Way more fun than any previous Mario game as far as I'm concerned. A little frustrating when using spring Mario but otherwise awesome.

JEALOUSY
Anyway, just got around to getting it. I seem to be the only man alive who really liked Sunshine, but I like this game a lot. It's good fun. Consistently great level design, cute characters, the works. I'm going through it relatively slow, just got to that first marble level (the "Green Green Galaxy" or something?) and am going nuts trying to balance on that damned ball.
-
I seem to be the only man alive who really liked Sunshine
Nuh-uh, not true. I liked Sunshine a lot too. Im not sure why everyone was so hard on it.
-
People hated it because it wasn't Mario 64 2.
Nintendo has the unique problem of getting bitched a lot when their core series are changed in any way whatsoever.
-
...really?
Because Sunshine seemed pretty derivative and like it was trying too hard to be Mario 64 2, but ended up so much worse.
-
It had a completely different control scheme with an entirely different way of doing platforming than Mario 64. I'd argue that Galaxy is much more the planned sequel to 64, and ended up outdoing Mario 64 in every way possible.
Sunshine certainly wasn't anywhere near as good as 64 was, but I found it entirely enjoyable.
-
Sunshine was alright, really. If it wasn't a Mario game it would have been praised much higher, but in comparison with other Mario games which are universally stellar, it just sort of fell short.
-
going nuts trying to balance on that damned ball.
Man that does not get any easier. It is frustrating as all kinds of hell.
-
I could never figure out why Mario Sunshine was so awful. I just know that Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy have sucked me in completely, and Mario Sunshine didn't engage me on any level at all. I played it for a couple hours or so, and kept thinking that it was going to get better and that I was going to suddenly 'click' and it would just start being fun, but it just never happened.
This has been my weekend:

going nuts trying to balance on that damned ball.
Man that does not get any easier. It is frustrating as all kinds of hell.
I found that it got better for me if I treated the remote like the joystick it wants to be in that part. I planted the bottom of the remote on my leg and used it like a joystick, not letting the bottom of the remote move.
-
Actually, after I realized that the circumference line around the ball represented the orientation of the wiimote, it got a lot easier, less accidental deaths and such. I just learned to take it slow.
I'm currently banging my head against the wall while trying to get past the ice world.
-
thank god for the video game drought in the first quarter or I may never finish this game. currently stuck on the anti-matter Bowser level
-
I beat that motherfucker Bowser but I'm still only on the eighty-fifth star.
Jesus there is so much game left.
-
I am also at 85 stars but I haven't beaten Bowser yet. I think I'm going to get to 99 and then beat Bowser so that the star I get from him is my 100th.
-
I got to 70 or so and went and beat Boswer and decided to take a break. I've got a lot of games I need to play through (I still haven't beaten Metroid Prime 3) and I've been so sick/busy lately I've got to keep things mixed up.
-
Buckle down, Nancy. Metroid: Corruption gets absurdly easy about midway through the Pirate planet, and you waft through the rest of the game in a couple of hours. It's only annoying if you want the special endings at 75/100 and 100/100 pick-ups.
I've got 112/120 in Galaxy and I couldn't be bothered to get the super secret bonus for 120 as long as I have Mass Effect and Call of Duty 4 to play through. Fabulous game. The Super Monkey Ball levels were particularly awesome although the final Bowser fight was way, way, way too easy.
-
Exactly. My friends had burned through something like 15 or 20 lives getting through the final level, and I jumped it at the Bowser fight and won in one try. It would've been anticlimactic, if I had expected anything other than imaginative level design from this game.
-
I'd just like to offer that I can't think of a single Mario game where Bowser was the hardest part of the game. Most of them, not even close.
