Okay bitches. Lets do this again, and see if we can't keep this one going, because y'all know this is a great idea for a thread.
THE RULES ARE SIMPLE. FUCKING READ THEM.
What will happen is this:
1: I will post a link to a SINGLE SONG I have uploaded, or maybe to a myspace page or a youtube video if I were a lazy ass.
2: The next person will download and listen to the song.
3: This person will review the song, and post one of their own.
4: The next person will review that song, and then post one of their own.
The most basic rule that people seem to ignore, possibly through being cretins is that YOU DO NOT POST A TRACK UNLESS YOU REVIEW THE LAST ONE IN THAT SAME POST. You also DO NOT POST A TRACK WHILST THERE IS ANOTHER ONE IN PLAY. The first person to review each track gets to post the next one. That said THIS IS NOT A RACE. This is an exercise to get you to listen to music outside of your normal comfort zone, review it, say what you think about it, and then impose your own tastes upon others. If it works, then we all get to broaden our musical tastes and have fun. Also, YOU MUST POST A LINK. YOU JUST MUST.
SOME THINGS TO AVOID:
1: Try not to just download and review things you like. Don't download and review any track that you actually know, that defeats the whole point of the thread.
2: Do not take criticisms of music to heart. Discussion is allowed, but don't take bad reviews as a personal insult.
3: It helps to structure these little mini-reviews if you give the track a score out of ten.
4: Actually read this post. If somebody is idiotic enough to break the rules, then do not go along with it. Say YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!, maybe post an amusing macro, and then continue with the true course of the thread. The best way to kill this thread is to have two tracks in play at once.
One additional rule: if the link to the previous track expires, then you may re-boot the thread by posting a new track. Otherwise, just follow the rules.

that song was ok, but if all Dying Bride sounds like this then I'm disappointed. The riffs were ok but overall it was pretty dull, the vocals were quite annoying and it just generally left me feeling flat and bored. Loved the faster break near the end, though.

The song is Land of Sherry Wine and Spanish Horses by Crime in Choir. They have two ex-At The Drive In members in it, but this isn't spaztastic like The Mars Volta. They're more of an old-school prog band than anything else. And the unnecessary sax solo in this song is bitchin'.
As a side note, has anyone else heard of !T.O.O.H.! or Lykathea Aflame? They were my other two choices and I wasn't sure how big they were on these forums.

Land of Sherry Wine and Spanish Horses, I listened to it and wasn't sure what to expect as I hadn't heard Crime in Choir or At The Drive In before. That said, I had mixed feelings about it, for me it seemed a bit too repeditive in parts and in others the sounds were actually fairly decent, I'd give it another listen but I think it deserves a rating somewhere around 5.5/6 out of 10.

Never heard Porcupine Tree before, and I was expecting something less punchy than this. It's got momentum. Might a little too rock-y for some tastes, if that even makes sense, and the lyrics don't jump out at me. I like it, but then, I could be a sucker. 7.8 out of 10.

I've been hearing alot of hype about buck 65- which usually makes me sketical, but i actually really enjoyed this. Lyrically it had an old school hip-hop feel (I know virtually nothin bout the genrre so i could be wrong), reminded me a bit of GZA's style in Liquid Swords. the music itself was really interesting and orignal. Deffinitely good enough for me to check more of his stuff out. I'm giving it 7.6.

Damn, I can't believe I had to listen all the way through that Buck 65 when someone else had already posted.
Anyway, back onto the song. I like this song (i've had it for a while now), which means it must be good, as I don't really like any BSS and I just generally find that most Indie bands' attempts at rocking out just end in some really brutal, cringe inducing failure (there's plenty of samples throughout this album). However, this song does actually rock out, which is a nice surprise. One of the rare indie rock songs that actually rocks- it may just be the distorted drum action, though. I dig this a lot. 8/10.
And now for my upload, some strange cure vs shoegaze kind of deal. This is a rather obscure band from Sweden, formed from the ashes of the excellent funeral doom band Thergothon. Not funeral doom though, some rather nice, if slightly heavy shoegaze for y'all. This is "This Empty Flow" and the song is "Snowblind". Enjoy:

Damn, Caspian, that snowblind song is pretty good. Admittedly, the guys voice is kind of annoying but it's a pretty nice song, I love it when the huge guitars break out at the end. 8/10.
OK, now someone else had better freaking reply to this. This is Harvestman's 'Lashing the Rye', some excellent 'folk screwed around with in a studio heaps' kind of deal, really nice although a bit of a patience tester- definitely late night listening.

That's a pretty good song. It's incredibly boring but I think it would be perfect for driving, being stoned, or driving while stoned.
I'm loathe to give it an actual rating since I know I'll like it more or less depending on the situation and my mood etc. It's odd that it bores me when the intro track to Boris' Akuma No Uta doesn't bore me at all. I don't know.

I rather like that. It reminds me of something I would have sang for choir in high school. His falsetto is also pretty impressive, and i do like the fact that his voice isn't totally perfect.

This started well, I enjoyed the plinking sounds. Xylophone I guess? I'm useless with identifying instruments. Anyway, the beginning is good but then the xylophone goes away and the other instruments are, while nicely structured and everything, totally uninspired. There's no character here, nothing to mark this out as any individual band. They're more a homogenous thing really. Then the vocal kicks in. I'm not sure how I feel about his voice, whether the fact that he seems to think it's bigger than it actually is works for or against him. That would need more listens than this is going to get, because whoever supplied those lyrics made it a moot point. Like the music they're empty, almost wilfully negating anything that would create something individual from this. Basically, this song doesn't exist. It's a composite and can be created by splicing bits of any slow paced American indie rock bands of the past ten years who wear checked shirts a lot and probably have beards.

This is flawed but overall good. I love the clashing, claning instrumentation, the raw production. Not a big fan of the vocals, though. I mean, I know this kind of music needs these kind of shouted/talked vocals but it still annoyed me intensely. A good song though. 7/10

I can't do it either, since it's my favourite Manowar song it would defeat the whole point of this thread. Somebody does need to review this and have it determine whether they are a wimp or a poseur and whether or not they will be required to leave the hall soon though.

Whoa. What a fucking kick ass song. And I really wasn't expecting to love this, not a metal man myself- but this song rapes. I love the soaring build at the start. Really pumps you up- can hear a massive influence on Tenacious D in his voice and lyrics. Just a shit load of 80's hardcore fun. 9/10.

I really liked this song. The buildup from the keyboards and drum beat the climax with the whole band and then the saxophone bringing it all back down low again was great. I didn't catch all the lyrics but the vocals sounded genuine and emotional, with little bit of Thom Yorke influence. The song sounded kinda Pink Floyd-ish too. Anyway, I give it an 8/10.
Anyway, I'm not really in that obscure music at all, so I apologize in advance if the track I post gets a "who hasn't heard that?" response.

Sorry man, but that totally sucked. It didn't really go anywhere, the guitar playing was extremely boring and the vocals were ill fitting and just really annoying. Admittedly it isn't the kind of music I'd like anyway, but yeah, it sucked. May be ok when played on acoustic when really drunk, but that's about it. Sorry. 1/10.

Ok, I don't like the way it starts, it seems a bit out of place, but I like how it builds up. Some bits of instrumentation strike me as odd when you focus on them (some guitar runs and the like, for example), but if you listen to the song as a whole, they fit in well. Overall, however, it's too samey for me to love it, I want more swelling and falling, but I definitely quite like it. 7.8/10

Ok, from the title I figured it'd be something techno like, I started listening, was waiting for it to do something interesting, then the vocals came in, it sounded like it had potential, but then it just sort of missed the mark for me. It had some good ideas there, and then there were the odd computer based beats that were running through the parts without vocals, but then it just started to drive my nerves after a while. Especially the vocals that sounded like they were screamed through a loudspeaker, through a walkie talkie and then recorded on 8-track. I'm going to have to give this one 3/10
Fair to Midland are a band that I've only recently gotten into, but I just can't seem to get enough of their stuff. Give it a listen:

My first thought was "this sounds a lot like System of a Down", and surprise, it's on Serj Tankian's vanity label. I'm not a fan of SOAD. And I wasn't mad at it at first, but then it really started to sound like SOAD. So I'm just going to have to give it 3.5/10.
This one is a track my buddy (who's much more into the whole indie scene than I am, which probably ain't saying much) sent me via e-mail a few months back. I think I like it, even if it is a bit monotonous.

I don't want to get pigeonholed in this forum as being "the dude that's negative about everyone else's music", but damn, that SUCKED. Drums are incredibly annoying (I think that's possibly the most annoying drumbeat ever, which is no small feat), vocals make me want to poke my eardrums out with a rusty skewer (we're going back, and forth, back, and forth!!! ARRRRRGHHHH) and the guitars are faggier then a gay porno featuring Connor Oberst and Sufjan Stevens (nothing against gay dudes, but I think that explains my point pretty well).

A really good song, I liked it. They seem to know what they were doing, because even with the noise, it is still possible to hear melodies. I really enjoyed the first part but the 30 second slow part starting at 2:30 or around there almost ruined it. The tone of the guitar for the one part was dreadful. Otherwise it rocked pretty hard.

Wow, so when I pulled up the page, it automatically went to "Eyes to Form Shadows" and I didnt realise my mistake until I looked back at this thread, but that one was good too.
So I went back and listened to the proper song.
"Paragraphs Relentless" was even better than "Eyes...". I am very picky about what rap I do like, so I was wary going in, but the beats are dark, and the lyrical flow was most impressive. I guess they are going for a more techno / electronica feel with some of the samples/beats, I can understand the reasoning, but some of the long breaks in vocals just didnt seem to go anywhere, just 30 seconds of the same beat thats been going on for the last two minutes.
All in all, quite good, 8/10

I liked it, thanks. The (synthesized, I assume) folk instruments blend well with the music, and I liked how they used different ones throughout the song, rather than say, having a violin playing over and over like some bands do. The keyboards remind me of power metal at times, but they're used pretty well here, complementing the metal guitar riffs rather than drowning them. The singer's voice reminded me of the singer from Inkubus Sukkubus, when she was singing. Her scream was ok, I suppose, she's not Angela Glassow.

I don't know enough about metal genres to say anything intelligent about that, but I will say that even with my extremely minimal amount of familiarity with metal this song didn't feel new at all. That said, it was alright. I liked the Eastern sound it had. Basically, it was pleasant. 6/10 (I feel like most people forget about proportions when it comes to rating things. To me, 5 is middle-of-the-road; 6, slightly better.)

Anyway, the failure song. I did not mind it, in fact I quite enjoyed it. It reminds me (vaguely) of a Jesu song, or like the new Pelican album but a lot better. Like the guitar work and the vocals, and everything else is pretty solid. The more I listen to this the more I like it, I'll definitely check them out. 9/10

METALLICA- HELPLESS.
I really like this song, and while Metallica are pretty much hated by everyone on this board, no one can deny that everything pre-Black was pretty solid. (I personally like everything except Black and St.Anger, but that's just me I guess). Lots of riffs and energy, and the rawness of the production gives the whole thing a great feel. Maybe not one of the best covers ever, but still really enjoyable.

This is fun :), even though I'm pretty rubbish at writing reviews I'll try again.
I usually don't like Metallica (except for Unforgiven) because the singer (Dave Mustaine I think) tends to just yell in a really jarring way throughout the entire song (ie. the song Master of Puppets), but this was actually pretty good, if a bit repetitive instrumentally. I like the chorus part, especially. Kind of overlong, though imo.

I really like this- I am not a black metal purist, and I really like when bands are ok with clean and harsh vocals together. The girl on keys was a bit disconcerting- when they focused on her she seemed to be trying to be seductive instead of grim or whatnot, and her hair kind of clashed with the muted color tones. I also wasn't a big fan of the synthy slow break about 2/3 of the way through. The track really seemed to fit with the outdoor setting until that distinctly electronic tone came though. Whatever, I'm quibbling about the video more than the audio. That was very enjoyable, 9/10.

oh my. this was a surprise from the start. i actually find myself bemusedly enjoying this. The weird distorted voice around the middle was weird, and the operatic singer is....different?
nonetheless, the mix of rock and swing is pretty cool. something you might find on the soundtrack to a zombie-themed video game. 7/10

pretty good song, even if it doesn't bring anything too unique to the table. my only real complaint is the singer. he doesn't seem to have the skill to be singing that particular type of music, although i think he could do great in another genre. overall, pretty solid song. i espescially like it when the drums first kick in; good stuff.

As soon as I saw that the genre was "acoustic/punk/bliues" I was expecting to hate this with a passion. Turns out it's not that bad. It sounds quite 'authentic', I guess, the vocalist isn't great but the melodies are, and all in all it's quite a catchy tune. 7/10.
Here's mine, some pretty nice mellow, spacey, folky kinda stuff from one of the rare good Christian bands around. There's not any sort of preaching so don't let the whole christian thing put you off. This is Frail by Jars of Clay.

It was alright. It had a light touch, which was nice. I can see why the FCA always bought tickets to Jars of Clay shows at the end of the year. Christian music for people who aren't really interested in broadcasting the faith (or maybe just people who are interested in broadcasting it more deftly than usual) I'll give it a 6/10.

Maybe since I stopped using drugs, I havent really enjoyed super-repetative looping stuff. The beat was rather monotonous, and frankly, the +30dB jump (rough exaggeration, it got louder, I dont know exactly how much) was rather grating. Lyrically, it was OK, kind of eh, some of the rhyming was VERY forced, but whatever, I can't really hold that against him. But yeah, really reptative.

Having heard some Therion before and thinking that it was pretty pretentious and fairly shite I wasn't really expecting too much. While this still isn't the best stuff ever, it's not so bad, I don't mind the string intro, I just wish the rest of it was a bit meatier, I guess. The strings and ridiculously overdubbed vocals completely drown out the guitars and stuff. Not terrible, but it's definitely confirmed to me that this band isn't really worth looking into. 4/10.

This is pretty fun stuff. I am in the most general sense a fan of tempo/rhythm/volume changes and this really delivers. With all the electronics in the mix it sounds more synthetic (no pun intended) than i really like my metal, but still pretty enjoyable, especially the vocals. This has me convinced that I need to get some ulver sooner or later. 8/10
Anyway, this is a track from nightwish's new album. It would be really great if it sounded about 30% less polished. As it is, I still find it pretty enjoyable.

Having hated old Nightwish (or should I say, the old Nightwish singer) with a deep, undying passion, I was kind of interested with how they'd fair with a new singer. I was still expecting it to blow dogs, though. However, it sounds pretty good. The vocals are pretty well done, the string/synth embellishments aren't too bad, and overall it was a fairly good listen. A Nightwish song that doesn't make me want to stab myself in the ears? A Nightwish song that's TASTEFUL? Krazy! I'll definitely be picking up their newer album after hearing this. 8/10
Anyway, while I would like to keep the metal posting streak up, I thought I'd upload eluvium's Ostinato instead. Amazing ambient.

Very slow, pleasant organ intro, which continues as accompanying strings fill out the song with harmonies. I'm finding it really hard to tell how many instruments are joining in and what they are ... maybe a couple deep horns, something that sounds vaguely like an accordion but which I can't quite place ... in any case, the extended harmonizing makes for a very pleasant and soothing way to spend 6 minutes. It has a very minimalist orchestral feel to it. It's perfect falling-asleep music. I give it a 7.5 out of 10 for being pleasant and aesthetically appealing but overall a bit too low-energy to be really interesting.
My computer found the name of this song untranslatable, but it's by sgt., track 2 of "Perception of Causality."

The beginning starts to remind me of the ghost level music from Super Mario 64 after a while. Then the guitars and strings and stuff kick in and knock that out of the way. We're at 3:18 right now. I didn't know what I was getting into when I clicked this link. My interest is beginning to wane. I can't tell if the tempo's actually slowing down or if my brain's just playing tricks on me. Boy, the guitarist sure loves that one riff he keeps playing. 5:45. String break. This is really pretty right here. More ghost ambience in the background. Whoa, a completely new section. This is my favorite part so far. Faster-paced and more energetic than the first part. Lots of echoey guitars here. 10:21. Less than three minutes left. Home stretch. New thing starting. Basically all the instruments playing the same melody over and over again. Hm. Now the strings are doing like a solo thing, with some guitar noodling going on on the side. This last part is pretty cool. Upper register string melody with the guitars thrumming out some octave chords below. And now a relaxed bass groove with guitar noises. Aaaaaaand done. Parts of this were beautiful and melodically resonant, others were boring. It took the song nearly six minutes to find something that really drew me in. That is not a good thing, I think. 7/10

Mmm. Yes. This is a very strong dance track. A bit repetitive, but that's to be expected of a dance groove (hah) and I think it serves its purpose admirably. Got the booty shakin' and such. Still. Didn't blow me away or anything so it gets an 8/10
I'm curious to see what people think of this, cus for a long time it was my favorite song. I listened to it over and over for an hour once.

Okay, so what we have here is a song that builds up and up for about a minute and a half until it becomes a pleasant little run on a piano, and then returns to what was at the end of the build-up. It goes along like this for quite some time more, this one little musical phrase (I think you'd call it a phrase, I am very bad at terminology so sorry about that), and then some vocals appear to come in, all lost in the feedback and distortion which is an alright effect. Then it drifts off, it's over. I suppose I see what's meant to be going on here, taking something really simple and repetitive and then using very few other elements to make it into a song but the end result is very unsatisfying. If this had been only a couple of minutes long the idea might have held up better but there's too little here for the length. 4/10 because it is a catchy little phrase.

Oh, man, I get another marathon track? Well, so far this is pretty cool. Sounds like the overture to some deeply unsettling film, such as maybe M or No Country for Old Men. And then the guitars came in and cheesed it all up. Their vocalist is certainly... interesting. I'm going to be honest, here at 3:38 I'm not feeling this, so I'm going to skip ahead a bit. Ah, here we are. 4:18. Something slightly different. And back down to just a cello(?) for a second, which is nice, and then boom, back to the roaring hobo, as I've come to refer to him. Skipping ahead again. Ah, back to the ambience of the first movement, without all the power chords and yelping. 7:42. Great, they're back. And that ambient part wasn't even as good as the first one. The vocals sound like the part in Don Hertzfeldt's Intermission in the Third Dimension short when they start tripping out on the 3D glasses, which at least provides some momentary amusement. 10:05. The guitars are beginning to sound like they're saying "Repeat. Repeat." over and over again. Nothing else of note. It's over. Besides the very first part, I wasn't into it. 2/10

Back when American Idiot came out, my dad won free tickets to see Green Day in Denver from a radio station, and he gave them to me. A free show is a free show, and I attended. Jimmy Eat World opened for them. We were pretty far back, but they didn't seem to have much stage presence. Still, I vaguely remember having a record of theirs in high school, and remember them having some kind of cred stretching back to before they struck it sorta-big as a pop rock act.
This sounds a lot like that, which isn't bad. It's fairly straight-ahead rock music, and I like it. I'd give it 6.5 out of 10, that .5 getting removed to the words "ticked off" in the lyrics. I don't know why, exactly, but that annoys me.
Speaking of things I liked when I was younger, how about Ours? It's the baby of Jimmy Gnecco, an overwrought, gothier version of Jeff Buckley from New Jersey. I think he sung for Queen for a little while. He's got good pipes, but all in all, I liked the music a bit more when I was depressed all the fucking time. Still, a guilty pleasure of mine. Their third album is coming out sometime this year, under the probably half-hearted production of Rick Rubin.

The opening drums sounded so promising, and the guitars throughout the song are quite nice, I just can't get past that I think I would have liked the song better if the singer hadn't been there, especially when the howling start around the three minute mark. Goodness. Still, I give it a passing grade, if only just. 5/10.

I recommend a name change. It was rather repetitive, if not catchy. And all the cymbal-crashing towards the end kinda contrasted with the post-electronica type stuff going on earlier in the song. 6/10.

The first time I listened to this, my thoughts were, why are they doing alternate sections of awesome and crap. After that I broke out the better headphones and gave it a couple proper listens, and I have to say it's grown on me. The only quibble I really have is the vocals, I get the felling I would have liked this a lot more if the vocals were a little more death metal, a little less screaming. Overall I liked this, I might even give a listen to the rest of the album, someday, after I've actually listened to the rest of the music in my library. 8/10

This might be the best metal piece I've heard ever. Not that I listen to much metal. Perhaps on repeated listens, what I perceive as novelty/humour (ridiculous lyrics) might grow thin, but the excellent music could save it. The production sounds great, the tones and instrumentation used are refreshing, and the composition is engaging from start to finish (and often hilarious).

Well, that was certainly weird. Loved the guitars, didn't really like the drumbeat and stuff that came afterwards though, thought it kinda killed the enjoyable spaced out mood of the intro. Stereo imaging was good, the annoying lack of coherency.. not so good. Not terrible, though. 5/10.

I dunno, I guess I just don't get it. This doesn't sound like anything to me than a sludgey guitar drone that overpowers nearly every other instrument in its presence, as well as the vocalist. Plus it's ten minutes long. 3/10

A nice bit of music there, has it's slow notes that wind up and down and every now and then an erratic tune thrown in, with a few atmosphere changes. Then it gets to the drums coming in, I like how the strings and piano are kept in the mix, everything being up beat, and then a sinister little bit to then get thrown straight back to up beat. I liked it.

Wow, I can't remember the last time I enjoyed rock of any sort as much as this. :-o I will be getting more stuff from this band in the very near future, for sure. There is nothing that seems really groundbreaking or innovative on this track, but the way everything comes together sounds just awesome. I love the way everything is mixed, the rhythm, melody, vocals, everything feels like it was tweaked to be the best that it could be. 10/10

I really enjoyed that. I loved the atmosphere, and how it breaks through in the loud sections. The 'rock-out' parts didn't sound terribly original, but I liked the contrast. 8/10

I have a love/hate relationship with folk music. Sometimes I really hate it. Sometimes I can sit and listen to it on repeat for hours. I think this would fit comfortably in the latter category. It seems to have a direction to it that I can't find with a lot of folk music. In a word: gentle. 8.5 / 10.
