Title: Can anyone recommend any good australian music that I might like?
Post by: Tom on 13 Nov 2007, 20:24
Yeah so that's pretty much it.

I listen to, Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, Spoon. Sunset Rubdown, the Good Life, Rilo Kiley (speak of the devil the radio's playing Silver Lining), Sunset Rubdown, The Fiery Furnaces, the Who, Talking Heads, Andrew Bird, Beck, The Beatles, The Shins, Bright Eyes, Tokyo Police Club and The New Pornographers.

I have always found Silverchair to be really annoying and don't recommend Operator Please or I while track you down and kill you.

Um, operater please? perhaps?

Why do we need a new thread for this? What's wrong with the Ozmusic month one? Anyway I was just about to reccomend the dirty threewhen i saw that post. Midnight jugernauts are really good. If you're willing to give electro a go, Cut Copy is pretty good fun.

Midnight Juggernaughts I know of and are remarkably less annoying than Cut Copy but thanks for playing.
I'll check out the Dirty Three when I get a chance.

There is a film of sorts that is coming out that documents the current indie scene in Melbourne, Australia.  It's called The Super8 Diaries, and it's coming out January 20th, 2008.  Several bands are interviewed, including some of my favorites Baseball, Witch Hats, and My Disco.  The bands all have one song filmed on a super8 camera featured in the documentary.  Here is Witch Hats' song. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNXs02zLwWY)

This band reeks of Sonic Youth and The Jesus Lizard.

Off the top of my head:

Gauche, CODA, anything on Elefant Traks- especially Hermitude, King Tide, Jumbledat, the Imaginaries, the Captain's Package, Snowman, Cuthbert and the Nightwalkers, Elana Stone, Leanne Paris, Rica Tetas, Mr. Bamboo, Richard In Your Mind, Katalyst, the Phonies, the Bird (I like most of Ben Walsh/Bobby Singh's side projects too... check out Dha, Circle of Rhythm, Crusty Suitcase et al.), Cleptoclectics, Bluejuice, Rastawookie, Juke Baritone and the Swamp Dogs, the Avalanches (but only El Producto, everything else is average IMO), the Crooked Fiddle Band, Sub Bass Snarl, and uh...I've run out for the moment. Maybe more later.

Just listen to TripleJ during the day* some time this month. There is really too much great music out there right now.

Also, maybe you just hate fun? I dunno... you seem to put down everyone's suggestions without giving them a second thought.

*I say during the day because Robbie Buck shits me, Rosie Beaton shits me, Jay and the Doctor shit me and the entire TripleJ-listening-and-calling-in-audience shit me.

Well I can't go without getting at least one Perth band in there. Karnivool. They're a hometown favourite generally. There are other bands, rock and the such, but I don't know enough about them to recommend. And it doesn't sound like you're into metal, so I'll leave that as well. Ah well, Give Karnivool a look in, they're... um... different.

His cameo on Scrubs was the only good bit of this season, so far (aside from a drawn-out Dr. Beardface scene).

When I was in high school, the girl who had a locker next to me got me into an Aussie band called Kisschasy. Are they still around?

Hey dude, in the hope of not completely hijacking this thread, what are some of the bands that you'd recommend in the go of Metal. I see you're from Sydney, I just wondered what NSW had to offer, I try to keep track of the bands that are involved in the Perth metal scene, but it's nigh impossible.

In the way of Perth metal bands I'd offer the likes of various styles, including the likes of Pathogen (melodic metal), Malignant Monster (cross between melodic and some kinda black metal/death metal), Voyager (epic metal), Arterial Hemorrhage (grindcore at it's finest and most self depreciating), Blowtorch Abortion (similar to AH, but with more brutal themes, rather than such things like Quad Damage, it's more like Bashing Faggots witha 2x4, all in jest of course), Chaos Divine (a band that tends to support a lot of international supports in this town and gets good reviews), Grotesque (death metal, some fucking awesome stuff here, a definate for Perth DM), there are others, such as Noctis (black metal) but yeah, I'd be here all night.

It upsets me that indie kids don't accept Wolfmother. They're a pretty decent band, but they broke quickly and got tons of mainstream radio play and a song in GHII so they're immediately shit.

Also they do not have many good songs.   I would say that "Joker and the Thief" probably almost deserved most of the airplay it got (well I don't know what it was like overseas but here for a couple of weeks it was usually playing on at least one radio station, much like "Chasing CaaaAAARGHAARHAGHSHUTUPALREADYAAARGHAars" was two months before that), but none of the other songs are really worth listening to.

While note explicitly about D&D, when I was at the album launch he mentioned it, and it makes a lot of reference to dice, and stuff like "I could have been a fighter or I could have been a thief"

Basically a song about the back story to a character he plays as.
It''s called "The Ballad of Osiris Stark" if you want to look into it.

I've lost count of how many times I've recommended them on this forum, but seriously: check out Martin Martini & the Bonepalace Orchestra. They're playing in Sydney on the 23rd, if anyone wants to catch them (and if you don't want to then you probably just don't like live music).

Also, for something completely different: Darren Hanlon is the best songwriter in Australia. Seriously.

Lastly, I saw a really good country-soul band here in Melbourne last night called Dog With Wheels. Totally awesome gig.

Yeah, it's going to be called "Birth Control" and the image is going to be a Duke Nukem style picture of a man punching a baby back into a woman. Pretty brutal. I'm mates with the drummer, he's a funny bastard, they all are really. You just have to remember that none of it is done in all sincerity, it's just brutal music for the sake of being brutal.

Well, if you are at all a fan of vulgargrad or gogol bordello, or even robert johnson and djiango reinhardt, then I urge you to investigate mojo juju and the snake oil merchants. they hail from newcastle, and the songstress is quite an interesting lady.

the seabellies won a chance to play at the V festival in sydney last year alongside beck, the pixies and jarvis cocker and they are very much delving into the heady depths of elaborate glitchy pop music much in the vein of arcade fire or broken social scene.

there are some great bands getting around sydney even though people tend to deify live music in melbourne, including okkervil river, cuthbert and the nightwalkers, the devoted few ( surprisingly not an emo band, as i imagined them to be), dappled cities fly and matt tonks and jack ladder are great songwriters.

love outside andromeda from melbs, holly throsby, plastic palace alice, gotye and the band he drums in called the basics, dan kelly who is paul kelly(iconic aussie country songwriter)'s nephew, because of ghosts, old man river, mercy arms had a bit of a morissey vibe going on last time i checked, the morning birds,

gelbison flew under the radar despite some wonderful songwriting, the sleepy jackson album 'lovers' is a personal fave and aleks and the ramps are one of the best live bands i've seen in a long time. the book of ships are up and coming, they're either going to be big or not, but there's some absolutely stellar music going on under that name anyway. the firekites and the instant are also from newcastle,

dardanelles, ground components, art of fighting, decoder ring, fourplay are quite an ingenius string quartet- if you can, check out their covers of killing in the name of or 2+2=5, and if you manage to get your hands on grand salvo's 'the temporal wheel' i heartily suggest you do. its a winner.

if that isn't enough fodder i must be doing something wrong, but trust me!

The Lovetones are a great rock group from Austrailia. Borrowing elements of 60's psychedelia and 90's underground pop, they create a wonderful sound that sounds like a mix of solo-John Lennon and Matthew Sweet. You should check em out sometime, startin with their debut Be What You Want.

goodness...3rd post in a row...
vulgrargrad are incredible, no?! i must admit i've seen them about 8 times so far, though alot of them were around the east coast. i only moved to melbourne at the start of the year, i saw them play at the toff in town and also at the old bar, and if i remember correctly the empress in fitzroy which is (was?) a great venue! i'm so glad someone else has heard of them! mojo juju has supported them, also she played with martin martini at the evelyn last time i saw her in melbs. too good.

for sure, they seem so comfortable there. i was actually at the great escape festival in sydney (set in an old armory) earlier this year doing some sideshow stuff and they played in the cabaret bunker- that was a terrific gig! so hot and sweaty, and was packed with festival goers and what i assume were costumed/masked members of a theatre troupe. i heard they got in trouble with security when they hassled the bartender but we shared bottles of tequila and vodka outside the equipment storage! good weekend. that singer just has the most amazing charisma (and that's as far from the miss universe sense of the term as possible). perhaps we should continue the conversation outside this particular topic? i'd prefer it if my face weren't 'chewed' by over-aggressive contributors...i've heard stories!

I think AC/DC had a lot of good work in the 70's with Bon Scott. Sure, it's not very mature or truly emotional music, but that's not they aim for. They just make hard rockin' music, and they had made it pretty fun and original during that time period. Rather formulaic after a while though, which is why after the 80's they want to Hell.

I don't think anyone has mentioned them yet, so I'm going to put in a plug for The Grates for three reasons:

1. Patience's vocals are the prettiest/sexiest/most "bitchin'" display of pipes I've heard in quite some time.
2. I bought Gravity Won't Get You High immediately after seeing the video for "Rock Boys" and, to my pleasant surprise, the whole album was very, very good.
3. ... I like them a lot?

In all due seriousness, they are one catchy little band.  Not necessarily a band that sounds anything like some of the other things suggested (i.e. Arcade Fire or Alchemist) but worth a listen, I think.

Angus & Julia Stone (although Angus also does some solo work - also worth a listen)
The Audreys
The Avalanches
Bob Evans
brillig
Clare Bowditch
Dallas Crane
Gerling
Gotye
The Go-Betweens
Magic Dirt
The Sleepy Jackson
The Whitlams

*shrugs* Just a few suggestions.

My personal favorite Australian band is The Living End, a band that fuses psychobilly with punk, resulting in some very good stuff.  Check out their album "Modern Artillery," it's their best in my opinion.

(Woo finally found a reason to post)

The Living End are great. The Aussie band I have to offer is Vanishing Point. Prog-metal, and damn good at it. I saw them front for Dragonforce when they toured in May. In all honestly they were better than Dragonforce were. Of course the fact that DFs set sounds like the same song played in slightly different ways doesn't help =p.

AUSTRALIAN BANDS PEOPLE HAVE TO LISTEN TO THAT HAVE NOT YET BEEN LISTED:

1. Machine Gun Fellatio
Good Aussie rock/techno/wtf band.  They do strange music and really don't have a definable genre aside from "alternative".  Youtube the song "Unsent Letter" if you have any doubts.

2. The Veils
Not really an Aussie band, but close enough: New Zealanders.  The lead singer, Finn Andrews, is the son of some guy who was in the band XTC (I think, not sure).  Finn Andrews is also a ridiculously pretty man.  Think young David Bowie with Angelina Jolie lips. They sing indie stuff, really light and airy.

You also HAVE to watch THIS (http://youtube.com/watch?v=KDlDQ0YkvK0) video.  Probably one of my favorite songs ever, and an excellent video that reminds me a lot of Kevin Drew's video for "Backed out on the..."  A lot of energy in the Veils.  I would pick up their album--or Soulseek it--The Runaway Found.

3. The Whitlams
They're alright.  They did a song called "No Aphrodisiac" which is really all by them I've heard.

4. The Go-Betweens
Aussie indie stuff.  They sing folk rock and had a spell of new wave.  Get their 'best of' album if you want a good taste, "Bellevue" something or other.

Of course, The Avalanches (think UNKLE but a lot prettier) is probably the best and most well known alternative band to come out of Australia, ever.  I just fucking die whenever I hear Since I Left You.  Rad video, too.

There is so much more to The Whitlams than "No Aphrodisiac". They actually did happy songs as well, y'know. I agree with the suggestion of Fourplay, but I reccommend them to everyone, as well as TZU and True Live (both are Aussie hip hop acts, True Live using strings as a major part of their music). I am in love with Claire Bowditch and The Feeding Set's latest album (The Moon Looked On), so you should check that out. Sarah Blasko is the same kind of sound as Claire Bowditch, so check her out too.

Gogogogo!

There's a decided lack of Australian experimental music in this thread. For the open-minded listener, check out Justice Yeldham (http://www.dualplover.com/justice.htm). Without a doubt one of the most extreme musicians/performance artists around. He takes the stage barefoot, straps on a belt festooned with effects pedals (making him look somewhat like a suicide bomber), and picks up a sheet of plate glass which has a contact mic attached to it.

He then proceeds to play the piece of glass with his mouth, buzzing and bending it, creating a vicious cacophany of noise with a decidely organic basis to the sound. The set progressively increases in intensity and volume, as he gradually crescendoes in a bloody mess, biting, breaking, and shattering the glass over his face, dancing around pulling shards of glass out of his feet and slapping at effects units. Also bleeding a fair bit.

The crowd pretty much reacts with a mixture of horror, disgust, fascination and desire to call an ambulance.

Australia is the only country where (even local) knowledge of the music scene is exceedingly limited, lending itself to being viewed as 'narrow' or 'sparse'.

I would suggest anyone interested in Britpop/indie/folk music to check out the following:

Mid-State Orange
theSmallgoods
Summer Cats
Anthonty Atkinson & the Running Mates
The Zebras
Julian Nation

And if anyone mentions The Living End again, I will disembowel them. Slowly.

Sorry. Re-read the sentence and I've typed quicker than my brain's thought; the result being an incomprehensible, grammatically incorrect jumble.

What I meant to say was that very few people (even locals) know much about the Australian music scene. Everyone knows international acts like The Living End, etc, but knowledge about local bands is fairly marginal. The stuff that's actually worth a listen remains undiscovered.
Title: Re: Can anyone recommend any good australian music that I might like?
Post by: McTaggart on 11 Dec 2007, 07:14
I'm not sure it's actually that different from anywere else really. I actually thought it was a bit better considering we have a pretty mainstream radio station with a large focus on australian music, especially little kinda maybe big for a local band bands. And I'm sure each city has it's RTRFM with a lot of talking up and advertising for local acts and events. The reason I know about what I do is through a conscious decision to listen to RTR more so that I can find out more about what's happening here in Perth. I think you just have to look for it a little if you want to find it.

I don't think the vast majority of people really want to find local music.
Title: Re: Can anyone recommend any good australian music that I might like?

I really do but gigs tend to be for adults and FBi is near unbearable to listen to because the play an excessive amount pf electronica and hip-hop which does not appeal to me in any way. It's funny, usually when some indie band band on the east coast gets some notice they are branded as the next best thing but they're music is quite shite.
Examples include Operator Please, Wolfmother, Jet, The Sick Puppies, The Scare, Silverchair and some hard rock trio from Sydney Grammar.
On a side not Sydney Grammar has produced some rotten bands, rich boys with a lot of time on their hands as well as the aforementioned band with a name i forget and Midnight Oil. Dappled Cities Fly are at least halfway decent.

As the thread seems to have moved into random genres at this point... I figured I'd plug a few decent local bands that come immediately to mind. Some of these have been mentioned in other threads, but I don't think they've been listed here yet. Links are all to either youtube or myspace for examples of the music.
Random:
Laura (http://www.myspace.com/lauranoise) (how has this not been mentioned in this thread yet?) - Pretty Post Rock
Six Ft Hick (http://www.myspace.com/sixfthick) - Rock. One of the most fun live bands in Australia.
The Necks (http://www.abc.net.au/tv/set/1.htm) - Hour long beautiful, if slow, improv jazz pieces.  (link is to ABC tv site, with a streamable set of theirs.)
Yves Klein Blue (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=74706253) - Really not my style, but I'll get slapped by some friends if I don't include them. Kind of perky... ummm rock/pop?

Metal:
Astriaal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jD5AFuNgSSw), Five Star Prison Cell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0y8sB_NatRQ), Dead Letter Opener (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=30873003)

Experimental:
Ben Frost (http://www.myspace.com/theghostofbenfrost) (admittedly he lives overseas now, but still...), Ai Yamamoto (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=77371385), Lawrence English/IO (*grumble* appears he doesn't have any viable linkable music) so www.room40.org is his label, as a compromise, Chris Abrahams (pianist from The Necks), Pimmon

I'll second Martin Martini and The Veils by the way (although The Veils kind of count as a UK band at this point imo). I'm sure I'm missing a ton, but meh.

Dukka gets hugs for pretty much every band they mentioned. Especially DLO who are by far the best of the "Dead Letter Somethings" that seem to be everywhere in the last couple of years. Certified Nerdcore is an EP I recommend anyone here look into if they like music that is loud.

So loud

I have to admit to being really underwhelmed every time I've listened to the Necks. While the idea is great (long pieces that are made up and collectively improvised on the spot, never to be repeated) I find the execution incredibly limited and rather dull. Why, in an hour long piece, does Chris Abrahams seem incapable of moving beyond a couple of octaves in the middle of the piano? As a some-time piano player the refusal of most jazz and rock pianists to utilise the full range of their instrument frustrates me no end.
Title: Re: Can anyone recommend any good australian music that I might like?
Post by: dukkha on 11 Dec 2007, 18:22
The Necks tend to be a bit hit and miss in my experience. One time I'll see them and be amazed, the next time it seems no one can really get going and they're limited to a tiny range (and whilst minimalism is 'almost' a valid excuse...). Along that line, I've always been more impressed by their live output than their recorded work (despite it being effectively the same thing). May just be a mood/setting issue.

Speaking of jazzish things, I really meant to mention Misinterprotato (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=57986146) in that last post. Brisbane based Jazz band that does mostly originals and is generally pretty outstanding.

A couple of solid Melbourne outfits:
The Knives of Neptune - A mix between At The Drive-In, Trail Of Dead and maybe a bit of Mogwai.  Absolutely killer live, though recorded the production is a little thin, definitely worth giving a listen.

A Friend Of Mine - Radiohead, Mogwai, Neutral Milk Hotel, Nine Inch Nails and My Bloody Valentine rolled into one.  Doing some really impressive and pretty moving stuff but still not afraid to lug a toilet on stage.

Shooting At Unarmed Men - The main songwriter of these guys is one of the two dudes who did the writing in McLusky and these guys basically sound like McLusky.  Great Welsh/Australian rock.

While AC/DC arent the most diverse band out there, thier work with Bon Scott was truly classic (I liked Back in Black, but, but Bon was well...Bon).  They've said they're a thru and thru rock n' roll band, so I can't see them doing 15 minute synthesized prog pieces anytime soon.

also; the drummer's other band is called sui zhen (myspace.com/suizhenmusic (http://myspace.com/suizhenmusic)) and they are very good, very different to crooked fiddle but they are playing at the annandale hotel next thursday with jezebel and sherlock's daughter for anyone who's interested. crooked fiddle band are playing with my band ergo b bag (myspace.com/ergobbag (http://myspace.com/ergobbag)) the next night, so its a busy little weekend on paramatta road.

Oh man, I saw these guys last year at a backyard show and it was the best fun ever (also thanks to Actor/Model who played right after them). They gave the audience percussion to play along and had a massive singalong song.
