EDIT: Looky here at what i found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hijokaidan apparently they've been aiming for a wall of white noise.

OOIOO is amazing. and of course I 43rd the Shonen Knife. I just re-found 712 on CD after my cassette of it broke 10 years ago... their ode to Redd Kross is boss... and so is White Flag.

WHY HAS NO ONE MENTIONED BORIS YET.

Also, for excellent delay pedal rapeage, I'd totally suggest Galax, in fact buy their CD because it owns really hard. Also, Keiji Hanjo, and definitiely Fushitsusha.

You will probably hate all these bands but if so it's because you suck, Galax and Fushitsusha in particular are AMAZING.

Don't listen to bad music. Listen to all the amazing music Japan has to offer. Here are some good ones that haven't been mentioned yet:

Corrupted - evil sludge
Swarrrm - quality grind
Slight Slappers - ridiculous fast
Gauze - motherfucking Gauze
Pear of The West - triple awesome pop-punk
And of one of the greatest bands of all time, Melt-Banana

I got a feeling that this thread was supposed to be about Engrish bands, not Japanese bands, which is an awful shame.
Fortunately, a lot of the great bands mentioned are going to get checked out, so in the respect, everybody wins!

I gotta say to anybody who's gonna check them out...
Be patient. It'll grow on you, I swear. Might not be what you wanted, but stick with it! I very much doubt you'll regret it!

Japanese ska bands, with the notable exception of the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra.  They are good.  And not retarded.

Good Japanese music: Eastern Youth, Number Girl, bloodthirsty butchers.  The holy triumvirate.

Also, there's a list of what basically amount to Japanese orgcore bands here (http://www.x1984x.com/j-punk/).  I can vouch for neither their quality nor their retardation, however.

Post by: a pack of wolves on 17 Nov 2007, 07:20
There is no such thing as orgcore. Seriously, can people stop inventing genres and sticking core on the end? It's very silly. The bands mentioned on that site seem to be mostly pop-punk and a lot of them are on Snuffy Smile, definitely the best Japanese pop-punk label. The Urchin, Screaming Fat Rat, Spraypaint, Minority Blues Band and the aforementioned Pear of The West are all worth a look. I recommend the compilation Pig Dog records put out a few years back as a starting point, 'The Best Punk Rock In Japan Tomodachi' compiled by Yoichi Eimori (the guy that runs Snuffy Smile). Then again I don't know if Pig Dog still exists, it was run by Russell Remains and might have died around the same time as the Fracture zine did... Anyway, yeah, Snuffy Smile are great. I'll try and remember to put some Pear of The West or something in the sendspace thread.

Edit: Pig Dog seems to have indeed died a long time ago so I bet 'The Best Punk Rock In Japan Tomodachi' will be really hard to find, I should rip it for the sendspace thread since it's really excellent and has the amazing My Winter Jane on it, and I'm pretty sure all their records are oop too..

I can't believe I forgot Barbaros. Excellent metal, and yes, completely retarded.

Sample lyrics (from the excellent album 'rocking metal motherfucker', this is the title track):

We're rocking metal motherfucker
We don't like change underwear
We don't like to wash our hair
Waiting to go out on tour

We're rocking metal motherfucker
We don't give a fuck

I never have to work
We're playing sexual metal
I stay at home and masturbate
I fucking need a porno mag

and another track (the approriately titled 'Hot Sex')

My girlfriend with other guy
He said it was amazing
She is fucking fat
But sex is fucking hot

She pulled up her skirt
I wanna fuck with you

Hot sex and fuck or die

Don't be suprised
She is a perfect body
Those great big tits
I really think so

Oh, this is the lyric I've been looking for, this is amazing.

From 'Dick is Fucking Big'

Dick is fucking big
Pussy is fucking tight
Anal fuck is waiting
Big dick's might

Dick is fucking big
Fuck off shaving pussy

Put it in bitch mouth
It will makes you to ill
Sexual metal holocaust will
Crush poser gay!

Dick is fucking big
Fuck off shaving pussy

I will please entry anus
Oh my god! Give me spicy pussy
Pussy is good smell
Shit is bad smell

Dick is fucking big
Fuck off shaving pussy

I should at that despite the terrible lyrics, this band is really entertaining.

I saw Mono and World's End Girlfriend live a couple of months ago. They were pretty fucking good.

Also, you could check out some of the bands signed to Tzadik's (http://www.tzadik.com/) Japanese section, I remember some of that shit being pretty damn good.

Actually, just check out all of Tzadik. That label is the cat's pyjamas.

L'Arc~en~Squiggle L'Arc~en~Ciel
(Stupid name. Equally stupid and mindless poprock songs.)

ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION

Listen to Mono

Usually that would be fantastic advice but, based upon first post, I doubt this is what the OP is looking for (even if Mono, or, more correctly, MONO, are one of the best "post-rock" bands out there).

Pierrot, Angelo and Cali=Gari are all pretty good (in my opinion)
This website: http://jrock-music.mylog.pl/ has heaps of full j-rock album downloads.
Also, King Brothers (another j-rock band) are apparently coming in a couple of months to melbourne. Does anyone know if it's worth checking out?

Why are people recommending good bands like Boris, Envy, the Boredoms, Guitar Wolf, Shonen Knife, Afrirampo, etc.  (And if you're going to mention good bands, for God's sake, Acid Mothers Temple are the most amazing live band of all time, ever, for real).

The OP is probably looking for stuff more in the vein of this:

Also, Flagitious Idiosyncracy In The Dilapidation. Really good grindcore.

Mono.

Did anyone catch them on the most recent tour, where they were the second-to-last band to play and the other three bands were fairly bad but popular hardcore/metal?  I would think they'd have gotten ice thrown at them more than once.

I doubt it. In the UK they were touring with Jesu, and the two fan bases are, well, basically the exact same people. In the US it was Pelican wasn't it? The same goes for their fans. And for the record, Jesu are a pretty sweet band.

No, not at all.  Jesu and Pelican are great choices.  The tour they just did was with High On Fire and Coliseum and some other band.  The High On Fire/Coliseum fanbase, at least that I know of, are all rabid hardcore metal fans and could possibly be convinced to listen to an Isis album if their girlfriend insisted, and think that Boris are "pretty gay".

I'm serious.
Title: Re: japanese bands
Post by: a pack of wolves on 24 Nov 2007, 11:11
Damn. Things are a little different round my way, all those bands are listened to by the exact same people so a High On Fire / Coliseum / Mono bill would get most people frothing at the mouth in excitement but they would be hideously torn if Boris were on the same day.

I'll forgive this since it's your first post.  You should add some context when you say things like that.  Those bands are of a specialized j-rock subgenre and are "really good" if you like sort of light glam-horror-pop-metal.  Bands that niche I wouldn't recommend to everyone as a blanket statement, just as I wouldn't recommend, say, The Pipettes to everybody.
