So, I was looking at the Flaming Lips on Wikipedia, and noticed they were classified as space rock (great definition for a genre by the way). Early Pink Floyd is apparently also a part of this genre, which leaves me the question:
Do any of you have any space rock suggestions?
I've just heard two Hawkwind songs, and I'm loving it.
-
Get more Hawkwind.
You also want to acquire this:

Get the two disc version, there's a Hawkwind medley with Dave Brock on vocals on the second disk.
Basically, what we're talking about is Hawkwind, and lots of it.
-
Failure - "Fantastic Planet"
Hum - "You'd Prefer an Astronaut" and "Downward is Heavenward"
-
Stare One are cool..but they're not space rock
i mean, the lyrics are all about space, fantasy, universe and stuff, but the Music has IMO very few in common with Space Rock
my favourite bands in that genre are the Ozric Tentacles (early Pink floyd are totally awesome too, of course)
and of course early Porcupine tree (Up The Downstair, Voyage 34 and The Sky moves sideways are some of the most beautiful pieces of music ever)
there's also a lot of very good bands sounding very similar to the ozric tentacles, including Quantum Fantay, Südstern 44, Hydiria Spacefolk and more

/thread.
Also, I would say Pink Floyd's first two albums are pretty space rock-ish.

best space rock there is
-
Seconding Hawkwind and early Porcupine Tree.
Star One isn't really 'space rock', but it's awesome so you should listen to it anyway.
-
No of course Star One isn't space rock. Unless metal is not rock now.
-
Hawkwind and Parliament win the thread. But you might also check out some SikTh. But then they have elements of everything, it's just the easiest way to describe them is basically 'Space Metal.'
-

Oh god yes.
-
go out and buy a book called dave gormans googlewhack adventure. theres a chapter all about someone who obsessed over the stuff and it mentions a load of supposedly good bands (never listened to it so idk) and i would tell you what they are, but i wanna spread the magic of dave gorman, so yeah.
if you have a group of people called gorman, they are gormen
-
I second Hum, they're excellent.
-
Spacemen 3 - The Perfect Prescription
Also, get Sound Of Confusion by the same band. They are both amazing records.
I know someone will bitch me out because they are too derivative of The Jesus and Mary Chain but check out Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. They're garage-infused space rock. Great shit.
-
Captain Beyond?
And to a lesser extent, some of the psychedelic/drone/stoner-rock stuff like Mammatus is probably up your alley.
-
guys, THE CHURCH.
i always thought they were classic space rock.
under the milky way, metropolis, etc.
i mean, don't get me wrong, but i'm pretty sure having space on your album cover or in your band name or album/song title does not automatically make your band space rock. i thought it had to do with delay pedals and theremin and stuff.
-
Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space, while having Space in the title, is pretty much definitely a space rock album. It is excellent Italian space-rocking.
Same goes for Spacemen 3 which is pretty much the same band anyway but not really
-
Being space rock has nothing to do with theremins and delay pedals, and everything to do with being Hawkwind.

Italian? Aren't they all British?
-
I sort of took that Shellac album (Excellent Italian Greyhound) and just apply it to various things in day to day life because I am totally a loser/awesome like that.
-
Oh man, that is so win.
I can't believe I didn't get the reference.
-
Hawkwind and Parliament win the thread. But you might also check out some SikTh. But then they have elements of everything, it's just the easiest way to describe them is basically 'Space Metal.'
No, not a good idea. I'm going to refrain from going into detail on exactly how bad a band they are, but regardless of that Sikth are definitely not anywhere close to space rock. Spacemen 3 and Hawkwind are definitely where to start, it's amazing how fresh and undated Hawkwind still sound.
-
Yeah I'm really struggling to see how SikTh are space rock.
The way they don't have any songs about space, for instance.
-
I don't think that's a necessity to be a space rock band, I've always thought of it as a sonic thing rather than to do with lyrical preoccupation. But they don't really sound much like Hawkwind, to put it mildly.
-
Well, what Space Rock bands would you name that have never, in lyrics, artwork, album titles or otherwise, made any reference to outer space?
-
I guess if you count the word "Druganaut" then Black Mountain are disqualified but other than that they pretty much fit the bill.
Khar, I don't like how my last three posts have been contrarian to yours. STOP HAVING OPINIONS
-
Can we derail this thread into a discussion of how the new Ayreon album is out in two months and how I am totally stoked about that?
-
How has this thread gone on for this long without any mention of Acid Mothers Temple? They're the best you can find. And they've put out at least as many records as Hawkwind, so between the two you should be good for quite a long time.

the problem about amt is that it's impossible to get an overview about their huge and totally messy discography, containing about 500 albums (tons of sideprojects included)
I still think of the Ozrics as the best space rock band
-
i know they're not really space rock, but some times i can imagine Muse playing a concert on some intergalactic cruise ship or something.
it's probably just me being crazy though.

That's because they have a crazy light show.
Well, what Space Rock bands would you name that have never, in lyrics, artwork, album titles or otherwise, made any reference to outer space?
Yes, but there are plenty of bands that do have outer space references in their titles and aren't space rock, so classifying them by that doesn't really seem appropriate? (I'm trying to think of an example, but can't really come up with one).
I've gotten some Porcupine Tree(Tarquin's Seaweed Farm), and the album has been playing on repeat. It's amazing. Does sound a lot like the old Pink Floyd here and there.

They probably are a terrible recommendation for this poster, yes - I just recommend them anyway because they entertain me. I'm going to choose to pass over your 'how bad a band they are' comment, but they have elements of space rock. They have spacey middle sections, the improvisational passages (although I think they have them mostly nailed down by the time they record) the prog, the druggy haze.
-
Jefferson Starship Hur Hur.......
-
Cyann and Ben = Fantastic space rock.
-
I guess if you count the word "Druganaut" then Black Mountain are disqualified but other than that they pretty much fit the bill.
I was fortunate enough to catch them at one of their rare live shows a month back, and it was incredible to say the least. Great stage presence, completely captivating, and heavy, rocking music. The concert can be streamed on the CBC Radio 3 website. (http://radio3.cbc.ca/) Definitely a band of this genre well worth looking into.
Really excited for their new album as well.

Aww damnit, I was going to use that one.
I have the inside scoop on that album, from the mouth of Arjwen Anthony Lucasson himself.
The entire album is about various sci-fi movies Arjwen enjoys.
EG, The Eye of Ra is about Stargate (confirmed by Arjwen), and upon my own listenings, Perfect Survivor is about Alien, Master of Darkness is about Star Wars.
The rest I havn't figured out yet/I forget which is which. Point is.. it's nifty.
-
* High Moon - Outland
* Songs of the Ocean - Star Trek IV
* Master of Darkness - Star Wars, but more specifically Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
* The Eye of Ra - Stargate
* Sandrider - Dune
* Perfect Survivor - Alien
* Intergalactic Space Crusaders - Blake's 7
* Starchild - 2001: A Space Odyssey, and 2010: The Year We Make Contact
On CD 2:
* Spaced Out - Dark Star
* Inseparable Enemies - Enemy Mine
It's all there in the Wikipedia article. That I wrote.
-
Nifty. I must check out them movies I didn't know...... and then listen to the songs.
Point is.. good album.
-
* Starchild - 2001: A Space Odyssey, and 2010: The Year We Make Contact
Not really on topic, but I thought that movie was vastly overrated.
But I might give the songs a proper listen now.
-
Muse are often refered to as sci-fi rock.
Listen to Space Dementia off their Origin of Symmetry album and you'll understand why.
It rocks :-)
-
He's not really rock by any stretch of the imagination, but every time I bring up John McLaughlin around my mom she calls to him a "space guitarist" and it's started to rub off on me. I definitely dig it.
-
Speaking of Hawkwind:
It's really hard to get a hold of, but if you can, Nik Turner's live 1995 re-imagining of Space Ritual, featuring Genesis P-Orridge on one track, is insanely good.
-
Rush's album 2112 is a really good space rock album, blends in quite a bit of progressive rock in there as well. If you haven't listened to it yet, you should. Early Pink Floyd is cool too (though I far prefer their material from 71-79), their songs "Interstellar Overdrive" and "Astronomy Domine" are pretty much the best examples of space rock there are.
-
Guys, 35007. Also, Pharaoh Overlord.
For real.
-
guys, THE CHURCH.
i always thought they were classic space rock.
under the milky way, metropolis, etc.
They were always influenced by space rock, but I wouldn't say those two songs were good examples of that influence.
Their 2004 album Forget Yourself however, is basically space rock.
Also, The Church are my favourite band by far.
-
Guys, yun cannotm be fucking space rock unless you arew wirting songs about space. If you think a bands is space rock and they are not wrtiting songs about spavce then chances are they have just been taking ttooooo many fucking drugs. Yeah sure somethjijmes when you taken a drug youy may feel like myou nare m,aybe journeying through the cosmos or viewing the structure of the ether or something but ewhat the fuck ever that is nhot space rock that is just nbeing a hippy 30 fucking ears too late
-
Defining a genre by lyrical content is almost inevitably ridiculous.
-
Can purely instrumental rock be space rock?
-
30 fucking ears too late
-
except johnny my dear sir we arw not debating in terms of lyrical content wea re debating in terms of the author/text/reader debate. Basically, what you are saying is that as a reader you can define space rock. Well you know explosions in the sky might sound pretty spacey to me. I mean, who can seperate the sky from space? Scientits? They have no dress sense and are orobably mostly furries. Hey I think Burzum are spoacey. BUT THEY ARE NOT SPACE ROCK. Basiccally you arte a fuck person.
-
Something tells me this isn't a drunk post, yet I feel like it should be.
Also, when did we get dinosaurs? :-D
-
Basiccally you arte a fuck person.
hello sigquote

noooooooooooooooooo
space rock needs no lyrics
so you can't classify a band as space-rock just because of their lyrics
THE OZRICS HAVE NO LYRICS
and they're the spaciest space-rock band ever
space is not supposed to have lyrics, it should be a druggy weird bubbly ether-ish weedy bunch of spacey tunes, with lots of colours
and this is in fact the definiton of space-rock
-
Yawning Man, Nebula, and Hawkwind are the only space rock bands I know off the top of my head.
-
I'd call Spacemen 3 "drone rock" more than "space rock", but if you like them, you should check out The Telescopes.
