Title: My Favourite Song Ever...
Post by: Demonic_Duck on 22 Nov 2007, 14:33
Is Barbie Girl by Aqua.

Nah just kidding, it's probably Way Out Of Here by Porcupine Tree. Or Bungle in the Jungle by Jethro Tull. idunno.

Anyone here like either of those bands?

Jethro Tull is pretty sweet I guess.
I only have Aqualung and Thick as a Brick though, I require more.

I don't think I have ever actually heard a Jethro Tull song.

To be honest? Probably over time the longest running would have to be

Give me a kiss to build a dream on ~ Louis Armstrong

It never gets old to me, but currently my favorite song is Lost in the Wilderness from Children of Eden, sung by the original Cain.

Oh.. and Caliber ~ wintersleep

The only JT I have is FuturesexLoveSounds.

I never got Justified, but I hear it's pretty great.

Me neither, but Cry Me A River was a good single. JT is one damn sinister bastard though, he seems to be on a one man mission to make the creepy ex-boyfriend who might bundle you into the boot of his car a sexy look (and let's face it he's pretty successful).

I think the best song mentioned in this thread so far is Barbie Girl though. Now that's even more sinister than JT, although not as dark as Lene's solo album Play With Me. There's something so wonderfully wrong about it, like Barbie Girl it seems to be constantly hinting at a subtext of very uncomfortable power relations.

On topic and not just derailing this into a pop discussion, Songs From The Wood is pretty great and it has Solstice Bells on it (admit it, it's a good song!).

That is seriously a great song and one of my all-time favourites too.

Personally I couldn't narrow it down a single song though, I am too flighty.

Although I have a hard time deciding, I find myself coming back to "Untitled 8" off of () by Sigur Ros time and time again. I guess that means it's my pick.

Justified is a masterpiece, man. It shits all over almost anything on FutureSex. I genuinely believe that 'Cry Me A River' is one of the very best songs to come out of 21st Century pop.

I like Jethro Tull. He's really good on flute, and a pretty good singer.
I like and listen to lots of stuff, but my favourite song...

It would be a toss up between 'See Who I Am' by 'Within Temptation' and
The 'night santa went crazy', by 'weird al' Yankovic'

Two totally different songs. Testiment to my strangeness

"Ladies and Gentlement We Are Floating In Space" is probably the single best song I can think of.  I've heard it thousands of times over the past 10 years and it never fails to give me goosebumps.

You appear to be labouring under a misapprehension, madam. Jethro Tull, the musical act, is a band, not a person. Jethro Tull was a real person, but he died some time ago (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jethro_Tull_%28agriculturist%29).

Annoyingly enough, I have STILL never managed to hear the original version of "Ladies and Gentlemen..." with the Elvis sample.

Sendspace anyone?

Holy crap, the Elvis version of "Ladies and Gentlemen..." is even BETTER.  Damn.  I'd been led to believe the only difference was that it used an actual Elvis sample instead of using his lyrics.  And the gospel choir, just wow.  No idea why J took the choir our instead of just changing what they were singing.

So let me get this straight, Lisa Marie or whoever actually objected to having Elvis' work attached to something this good?  God, how ridiculous.

i think it officially was 'the elvis estate', but who knows?
When i first got the original version i loved it more, I even put it in a mix for a girl which was made with basically all my heart; but lately i think i've gone back to enjoying the official version more. What i find most interesting is that the meaning of the song is pretty much completely different depending on th the version. The first is much more just 'in love' while the other is so much sadder.

To me, both versions are incredibly sad, and sound like someone writing a heartfelt love letter that he knows will be unrequited.

"I will love you til I die and I will love you all the time, so please put your sweet hand in mine..."

Though the Elvis version does sound more "hopeful" and the "official" version sounds more desperate.  The latter has a lot more prominent use of the "I will love you til I die" line, which he manages to deliver in a really macabre way.
