Title: The Great Final Fantasy III Debacle
Post by: Dissy on 18 Dec 2007, 13:29
So, I picked up Final Fantasy III for the DS the other day.

A little bit about me:  The only Final Fantasy games I've ever played were one and two way back when.  I enjoyed Kingdom Hearts and have played through probably half of KH2.  I have a tendecy to get OCD on RPG games, ie get all 493 Pokemon, Get all the weapons and dalmations for KH, etc.

Now the question:

What should I do with the game?  Keep it or give it away?

I think the question here is why don't you play it, see if you like it, and make a decision?  I'm confused.

The FF4 remake for the DS looks ridiculously amazing.

Plus IV is a much better game. If they make VI in that style, I'll probably buy it even though I bought the GBA port just a year ago and play through it for the... fourth time, I think?

The FFIII for the DS moved so slowly, that it put me to sleep.  I don't know if it was load times or animations or what, but it felt so sluggish that I put maybe 15 minutes into it before I decided that I don't like oldschool JRPGs very much.

That also may have been because I was tackling Tales of the Abyss for the PS2 around the same time, which is one of the most fast-paced and simply fun RPG games ever made.

I thought III was fairly boring. I suppose I have gotten used to more developed stories. I still played it for quite a while. Then I encountered the dreaded submarine bug. My save file is me trapped on an island. I really had no desire to replay twenty hours (or whatever it was) and sent it back (GameFly).

So, yeah. Boring/Not engaging. Bugs.

The most fun part of the DS FFIII is going through and trying all the different jobs.  Before you sell/trade/give it away, at least unlock as many jobs as you can and try a decent few of them out.  GEOMANCERS!

And yes, FFIV DS looks awesome.  Especially with all the new plot elements that were intended for the original but cut out for space.  I hope they remake I, II, V, and VI in this style as well.  If not all of those, at least I and VI.  I because it's the original and would be cool in 3D, and VI because it rocked, end of story.

FFIII is currently the best 'traditional' RPG for the DS. It's nowhere near the best game in the series, and the Job system is more advanced and refined in FFV and FFT, but it's not a bad game by any means. I enjoyed it greatly. Just keep in mind that all the Job classes aren't equal, and sometimes you're better off staying in some of the early ones because your job level will be so high you become as powerful as your other characters who are using later ones. For instance, one of my characters was a Thief for most of the game, and she did as much damage as my Dragoon and Dark Knight/Paladin.
