Title: Duke Nukem forever: New Trailer = end of the world?
Post by: Manix on 19 Dec 2007, 14:17
Sp 3D Realms just released a Teaser trailer for a game called Duke Nukem forever, it looks great, I can hardly wait for it to come out!!

Okay, Sarcasm mode off!

http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/50464

I just gotta wander, is this a sign of the end of the world.

Listen up all you fashionable Aetheists, it might be time to start repenting.

Fashionable? Last I checked we're the less trusted by the American public than George Bush.

It's that bad.

DN3D is still one of my all time faves.

All i know, is that I've been waiting for this goddamn game for 10 years, and it feels damn good to see something new.

Besides, we needs someone to save the babes.

What engine are they using now?

Why do the graphics look so shit?

The parts that aren't Duke awkwardly lifting and dropping weights don't look bad. The later parts are in dire need of a physics engine.

I don't know why people don't just use Havok, honestly.

Looks like it's using a modified UE3 (as if there was any other sort), though certainly not near the caliber of Mass Effect or even Bioshock. Given that, what little of the physics I saw actually looked pretty decent. In most UE3 games objects, though incredibly bulky, feel like they have very little mass when tossed around. Anybody who played Gears of War can attest to this.

But the engine isn't everything, though it might be in this case, given the fact that this game will most likely be a straight-ahead shooter. A game like STALKER can come out with a pretty ugly engine and acquit itself.

I guess what it comes down to is how much they'll be relying on people's nostalgia to make this game work. With the legendary delays, I don't know how far that will take them.

If it plays at least as good as the old trailers for the original engines look, and damn they look good, it'll likely be a huge amount of fun.

Time to make tracks.

The original games were absurd and kind of stupid.

I loved them so much when I was 8 or 9.

I'm actually looking forward to this. I miss absurd FPSes a bit.

There are plenty of big dumb action games that take themselves seriously (Halo and GoW, mostly) so I suppose it'll be nice to have one that doesn't. All the same, I expect taking time to throw money at strippers to not be nearly as fun as it used to be.

Say, did anyone play the Azn version of Duke Nukem 3D? Shadow Warrior, I think it was called. They ought to bring that back.

I actually remember Duke 3D, outside of being ridiculous fun and campy, was also a much better FPS than anything else that had come out at the time.

Mainly though, it's the idea that we might have an epic cheese ball comedy of an FPS again.

I miss shooting pig cops with the freezer and watching them drop out the sky and shatter on the ground.
And shrinking my enemies and then stepping on them.
And making them expand until they explode.

Jetpack dogfights! Using toilets! Eating snickety snacks!
I wonder if you still have to shoot the babes to save them?

Oh, I forgot LotB, that thing sucked.

I still own Manhattan Project. It was really good I thought, and I'd be happy to have more in the same vein, but it was really just a cock tease.

Why are people talking like this trailer means the game will be released? Err. Released soon? They've been pulling this stuff for the last 10 years, if you haven't learned by now that a teaser doesn't mean the game is gold you really don't know Duke Nukem well.
Title: Re: Duke Nukem forever: New Trailer = end of the world?
Post by: ackblom12 on 26 Dec 2007, 18:37
I don't recall anyone actually saying the game has gone gold at all actually.

You do have to recall that this has been a couple of years where supposed vapor ware has started showing up in force. Prey, STALKER and TF2 are the ones I'm mainly thinking of.

Now the chances of the game actually being released are still slim, but the stars seem to be aligning in some way.
Title: Re: Duke Nukem forever: New Trailer = end of the world?
Post by: Ozymandias on 27 Dec 2007, 00:21
This is the first trailer that's surfaced in 6 years.

It's a pretty major event and signifies that they're still serious about making this game. Besides, I think the time is right to release it in the next couple of years. It's pretty much gone beyond joke status and I think its infamy will get most people to play it just to see if it could have possibly turned out good.
Title: Re: Duke Nukem forever: New Trailer = end of the world?
Post by: Melodic on 27 Dec 2007, 01:05
Right, but almost the same thing could be said for 2001. It's long-awaited new footage that looks complete, or close to it. I suppose the teaser really IS here to grab people's attention, but I think it's too small a tidbit to get hopes up yet.

Man, you're really taking a leap of faith there, man. A game that's been in development for over a decade might turn out shitty? Who would have thought?
Title: Re: Duke Nukem forever: New Trailer = end of the world?
Post by: KvP on 27 Dec 2007, 14:56
STALKER was in the can for what, 6 years, and it turned out alright. But it had an ambitious design philosophy going for it, something that I doubt DNF will sport. 3DRealms is like Id, they're 90's shooter designers out of their element these days.
Title: Re: Duke Nukem forever: New Trailer = end of the world?
Post by: Melodic on 27 Dec 2007, 20:14
You can hardly call STALKER a visionary success: the originally-slated game was so ridiculously ambitious compared to the finished product that it's ironic the game wasn't scrapped altogether. The first STALKER build was like GTA meets Silent Hill meets Deus Ex. What we got instead is a still-enjoyable semi-linear game with intriguing but half-finished elements.

At any rate, it's an ill comparison. Duke Nukem should have more success simply because it isn't striving to redefine a genre. I still argue that the teaser is no indication of an even remotely finished product.
Title: Re: Duke Nukem forever: New Trailer = end of the world?
Post by: KvP on 27 Dec 2007, 23:48
I don't think anybody really expects that, it's barely a tech demo. And I think you're giving STALKER short shrift. For one, it's enough evidence to disprove any sort of "the greater the development time, the worse the product" principle. It wasn't groin-grabbingly good by any means, but it was better than a lot of games that are released in short order. And I think STALKER is to be credited for having the best "living gameworld" to be put into a game of that scale. The AI was generally great.
Title: Re: Duke Nukem forever: New Trailer = end of the world?
Post by: Melodic on 28 Dec 2007, 02:00
But STALKER could have been made in literally half the time if the ideas were of that scale to begin with. Instead, they brainstormed what on paper was one of the most original and detailed games ever penned, and then gradually (over the course of 6 years) scaled back until they ended up with a game hardly worthy of the time spent. Don't get me wrong because I loved STALKER (I even modded for it (http://z4.invisionfree.com/STALKERRE) [/spam]), but the finished product certainly wasn't worth a 6-year wait.

That being said, I doubt it will come to that with Duke Nukem because, honestly, the game couldn't be revolutionary if it tried. I think we'll have a fun, top-quality shooter, eventually.

seriously tho, this trailer means nothing.  I mean Full Throttle 2 made it this far.  if this game comes out, my guess is that it's gonna be a blast to play, but nothing too memorable

I don't really care if this game ever comes out, but seriously, if you crap on the original Duke 3d, I'll fight you. The original Duke 3d used the Build engine and was therefore (along with Dark Forces) one of the first FPS games that actually made appreciable use of a Y-axis and had big, clever enviroments. We literally went from Doom's you-don't-really-need-a-mouse-but-it-can't-hurt gameplay to me going up the elevator, dropping off a ledge and then getting shot by buddy who had a jetpack with Duke 3d. It'd soon be overshadowed by Quake, which basically put the age of manipulating sprites to approximate 3d to bed, but even then Duke 3d lived on for quite some time due to the strength of its level design and unique weapons. The game is really only silly and underwhelming in hindsight, at the time no FPS gamer could really dismiss it with "So what if it has tits?" without being REALLY smarmy and disingenuous.

The last video came out in 2001. there has been 2 and a half development cycles since the last teaser came out for this game.

God bless Duke.

THIS (http://duke.a-13.net/?080907) is quite a fun page. A list of everything that's happened during DN:Forever's development, and things that have taken less time.

Come on...something that's taken longer to develop than the atomic bomb must be good right?

well I'm not sure about that, I mean the FPS has been done to death in every way imaginable by now.  I'm not expecting anything really groundbreaking.
Title: Re: Duke Nukem forever: New Trailer = end of the world?

Duke Nukem isn't SUPPOSED to be groundbreaking. If you "don't expect anything" to be unique or genre-bending about a new Nukem game, it means you value that as a quality in the game, which is most definitely the wrong attitude. This is about killing aliens and blowing shit up, not making the next revolutionary PC game.

Yeah, but the repeated attempts at re-developing it would seem rather silly if the end product was just another shoot'em up.  I realize what the game is going to be like, I just wish it could be more.  That's just my elitist side speaking though,  I'll still play it and enjoy it as much as the next guy.

Duke Nukem is to video games what Rambo and Die Hards 2, 3 and 4 are to action flicks.

Has anybody here played Serious Sam? At first it looked like a right Duke knockoff, but I hear they're really fun in their own right.

I like serious sam. Any comments on the relatively simplistic graphics will be summarily dismissed, since the game is pretty old now AND the graphics were purposely kept simple for the express purpose of filling the screen with more opponents and incoming fire than you will otherwise see in any game short of Ikaruga. Seriously, cross Duke Nukem with the good ol' 80s arcade theme of facing down wave after wave of incoming enemies and you'll have a good idea of what the Serious Sam experience is all about, and the game ran smooth as butter even when it came out.

Actually, the implication was that the sequels were less good than the original. They weren't bad, they were just had more in common with movies like Rambo. Especially Live Free or Die Hard. The original isn't a "one man army" sort of action movie. John McClane is a fly in the ointment, and he gets messed up real bad. That's what makes it so good.
