I know this should be in the comics forum, but fuck that furry-fested place. I want to talk about cornelius' new tattoo, and how he is suffering. I really like the portrayal of his suffering.
We really need to be talking about achewood regularly.
-
Like, how it's apparently Time's best graphic novel of 2007?
Is that the kind of thing to talk about?
-
You could join the Achewood discussion forum (click on any comic on the Achewood page)...
Although, if we're doin' this: I was really worried about Cornelius losing his impenetrable image of "gigantic badass" in the first comic where he had the tattoo, but then he started trying to pull his chest skin off, and beating it with the most painful part of the loafer. So I think that's safe.
About the TIME thing, I think they explained why they gave it to Achewood quite satisfactorily in the little blurb on the website, and I wish people would just shut the fuck up with the semantics already.
-
I was just bringing it up as a discussion topic. I could care less what Time thinks.
-
I love Cornelius' absolute suffering and despair turning into burning, insane rage at his new tattoo. I fully support this thread.
-
I was just bringing it up as a discussion topic. I could care less what Time thinks.
Even so, if you did, you'd have a lot trouble figuring out what the hell they are thinking. Srsly, Putin, person of the year?
Back on topic, Star Wars :-D.
-
You know person of the year isn't a praise thing? It's simply an estimation of who has been the most essential to the news this year.
I sugfgest that cornelius needs to enter the great outdoor fight so that someones ruips the tattooo off woth their bare hands
-
Achewood as best comic of the year is really awesome!
-
Time is a terrible magazine these days, though. Their number one medical breakthrough of the year is that circumcision decreases your transmission of getting HIV.
That is a terrible breakthrough. Chopping on dicks will not help much!
Wait, hold on.
Cornelius is a man. And a bear. And he will fuck up that damned tattoo. Godspeed, Mr. Bear.
-
I sugfgest that cornelius needs to enter the great outdoor fight so that someones ruips the tattooo off woth their bare hands
I'm waiting for him to do it himself.
I don't know how I feel about the whole Achewood getting mentioned in Time thing. I mean, its super awesome that it's getting the publicity that it deserves and everything, but I don't know.... I don't really like people saying how great it is and everything, while they don't get the jokes.
-
How do you know whether or not they get the jokes? Are you some sort of joke queen?
-
I think if you can tolerate reading Achewood at all, you're getting the jokes.
In my experience, anyone who doesn't get it seems to have a seething hatred of Achewood.
-
that's because those who don't get it secretly know the rest of us are better than them.
-
How do you know whether or not they get the jokes? Are you some sort of joke queen?
No, but my boss, who I tried to get to read Achewood a long time ago, and who then didn't like it, read it again because of the mention in Time, and now he loves it. He is not the first person I encountered that was like that. I mean, I've tried to get plenty of people into it, who just didn't understand it then, and who told me it was ridiculous, or silly, or stupid, and now they are all over it because its "the next big thing".
-
Oh god, is Achewood selling out? Do I have to stop liking it now?
Shit.
-
Achewood isn't the next big thing.
Also, two years ago I would've told you Achewood was shit. Then I actually forced myself to sit down and read it from beginning to end and I love it. I think you have to be in the right kind of state to get it and enjoy it. It doesn't work as a one-off gag strip, but if you don't read it regularly, it just feels like a terrible one.
-
Alls I'm saying is I'm not really sure how I feel about the Time article. I doubt I would really give two shits less if Achewood did sell out, and Ray and Roast Beef started doing commercials for Arby's(because my god, that'd be hilarious.), but I'm not really sure how I feel about people all the sudden loving Achewood because of the article. It's like, it's always been good, why just love it all the sudden?
Anyway, whats everyone's favorite story arcs? I really love the party one.
-
A lot of people probably haven't been exposed to Achewood, seeing as it's a webcomic and all and a lot of people don't read webcomics.
-
Look, I'm sorry I'm such a nerd that my mind is still blown when people don't know about pretty popular webcomics, or webcomics at all.
-
I hear there's one of them funny page strips on the world wide internet about these two young men who play video games.
They say it's quite the berries.
-
My favorite arc is probably the Great Outdoor Fight or the Mexican Magical Realism one. Also Beef, Metrosexual.
-
Beef, Metrosexual is a great one. "Who's fat? Me (I am)" That strip alone always makes me giggle, at least.
Phillipe For America, and Ray's Toilet Party are pretty great too. I really liked the recent Todd one too, but I love Todd.
-
I love the "weezer having a kid with an iMac" one, it never fails to make me laugh. Also the baby onesies strip, Beef's judgment when it comes to tshirt slogans is hilarious.
-
Time is a terrible magazine these days, though. Their number one medical breakthrough of the year is that circumcision decreases your transmission of getting HIV.
Not contributing, I know, and I'm sorry, but just to talk about that for a minute, if all the men in Africa had their penises circumsized and used condoms, it could decrease the transmission of HIV by as much as half, and preventing AIDS from happening anymore is a pretty significant breakthrough, even if we still have no helluva way to cure the disease itself.
-
Cutting off their entire dicks reduces AIDS transmission by as much as 100%.
How about we get the condom part going and the whole education thing working before we start cutting on people?
-
How about we get the condom part going and the whole education thing working before we start cutting on people?
Agreed. I'm not a fan of circumcision at all.
Now, can we talk about Achewood in this thread, and maybe move the circumcision discussion elsewhere?
-
Teodor is not circumsized.
-
Circumcised penises are just much more attractive guys, sorry.
Also I haven't read the Achewood Archive in a long ass time.
-
They are also overall more sanitary in general beyond prevention of AIDS.
I've been reading through Achewood archives slowly over the past week, felt like I need to know what the hell everyone is talking about all the time.
-
Circumcised penises are just much more attractive guys, sorry.
Your opinion is wrong!
I don't know what my favourite arc is, there as so many good ones.
-
Cutting off their entire dicks reduces AIDS transmission by as much as 100%.
How about we get the condom part going and the whole education thing working before we start cutting on people?
Some people do it for religious reasons you know. Just throwing it out there.
Anyways. Achewood is the best thing.
-
If all African dudes become Jewish, I have no problems with dick mutilation.
Though I do have to wonder what the fuck is wrong with God.
-
Back to Achewood.
Talk to me about cornelius.
A friend of mine is concerned it's going to turn out to be temporary. I would be hella disapponted if it was.
-
for Cornelius' sake I wish it were, but for the sake of the storyline I hope it's not. Maybe Ray will pay for laser removal or something, after Cornelius beats his ass for letting him get it in the first place.
-
I thought it may have been temporary as well, but it just seems like such a gigantic cop-out to do that that I fucking hope it's not, no matter what the ramifications for Cornelius are of it being real.
-
Guys, look at this strip from 2004 (http://m.assetbar.com/achewood/uua3q2HTs).
The dude at the front of the line.
-
Yeah Nolan from the Internet has been in it a few times before his appearance at Lyle's coffee stall.
He was also one of the three "intellectuals" who dissect Pat's spiritual good-time folk performance (http://m.assetbar.com/achewood/autaux?b=M%5ea11f09b8576e606bcb5038dfdb92fb821&u=http%3A%2F%2Fachewood.com%2Fcomic.php%3Fdate%3D10062003)
-
My favorite Achewood is this one (http://m.assetbar.com/achewood/uua8SckfR). There's something about Roast Beef saying "My Fiesta Name is Pendejo." that cracks me up every time.
EDIT: I thought I'd just edit this post than going on with a new post: I forgot about this one where Teodor finds a business card taped to Philippe's candy bar (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=11012007). "I HOPE YOU BOIL IN A BUCKET OF GYPSY SHIT!"
:-D hahaha
-
hahaha I love the Fiesta Max ones! This One's (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=10052007) probably my favorite of those. The last 3 frames crack me up every time I read it.
-
Also, two years ago I would've told you Achewood was shit. Then I actually forced myself to sit down and read it from beginning to end and I love it. I think you have to be in the right kind of state to get it and enjoy it. It doesn't work as a one-off gag strip, but if you don't read it regularly, it just feels like a terrible one.
I agree. A friend of mine is big into Achewood and would link me strips all the time. I always read them, and then wondered what on Earth was supposed to be so funny that he felt the need to link it to me. I finally sat down and read the archives a couple of months ago and now I love it. Its definitely not a comic you can just read occasionally and laugh hysterically.
-
as someone said on the comment board at achewood regarding connie's "tattoo"
Portraying utter shame and remorse and then twisting that into feeling like a horse's ass isn't a copout.
It is PERFECTION.
my favorite part of today's strip is, in ray's mind, there is NO POSSIBLE WAY connie is crying. when something doesn't fit his perceptions, he comes up with the most random, roundabout ways of reconciling them, just so he doesn't have to challenge them.
-
It kinda reminds me of Arrested Development or a similar show in that way. It makes hardly any sense if you were to come into it in like the third season, as so many of the jokes refer to previously established character traits or to things that happened in past episodes. But if you can sit down and watch every episode in order from start to finish, it's insanely good.
-
Dang, the tattoo is temporary.
This one (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=12202004) is one of my favourites, as is this one (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=10312003).
-
hell of such as meow
ohh man I love Beef
-
Man, excellent twist. Of COURSE Roast Beef has the Tron tattoo.
-
Look at these johnny come lately mother fuckers with their favorite strips in 2007.
Pshaw
-
That Philippe one with the bee costume is awesome, I love him so much.
-
I will always be partial to the arc with Philippe being possessed by Billy Idol, especially this strip. (http://m.assetbar.com/achewood/autaux?b=M%5ea11f09b8576e606bcb5038dfdb92fb821&u=http%3A%2F%2Fachewood.com%2Fcomic.php%3Fdate%3D07232002)
-
I could probably never choose a favorite strip but this is definitely one I laughed at for a very long time.
-
I guess? There isn't really much to do with the rest of the arc in that one, just basically that Ray is horrible at telling jokes.
-
(http://m.assetbar.com/achewood/autaux?b=M%5ea11f09b8576e606bcb5038dfdb92fb821&u=http%3A%2F%2Fachewood.com%2Fcomic.php%3Fdate%3D02042003)
ahhh I love it.
-
Achewood is the bane of my existence. I don't get it. I have said this many times already, though.
What I am saying right now is that if I don't come to Toronto and meet you guys it will because I don't like Achewood.
-
If you truly WANT to get Achewood, read it from beginning to end. We TALKED about this!
-
I used to love you Slick.
-
I think the best storyarc is the one where they invent the mobile phone holder underpants for Roast Beef and Teodor goes mad with the power of it all. Although as far as individual strips go, these (http://m.assetbar.com/achewood/uua4KC1kH) two (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=02062004) are probably my favorites.
Its amazing how often you can slot "Bitches gotta take their cunt pills! I ain't wearing no gunny sack!" into everyday conversation
-
Any Nice Pete strip is a contender, really. I'm especially fond of this one though:
-
I like that one because it makes me laugh and also makes me kind of feel uncomfortable at the same time!
Also Johnny why do you do all your posting at 1 AM?
-
So for my English final yesterday I had to write this essay about Oedipus Rex and I kind of ended it with "The End! No moral."
I got a C on it... I wonder why.
-
Also Johnny why do you do all your posting at 1 AM?
That's when I get home from mediocre nights out or my shitty job.
-
you guys need to help me
what was the strip where todd shanks that one guy?
-
Achewood has a search function.
-
then this is my favorite comic ever: http://achewood.com/index.php?date=01142005 (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=01142005)
thanks oli
-
How dare you not know every single character's name, Josh. Fucking CASUAL reader.
-
This (http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/6756/uua5v2znhnp2.gif) is my favorite achewood
-
I finally made myself read the whole archive recently. It kind of ruined the end of my university semester, academia-wise, but damn it was worth it. This (http://m.assetbar.com/uua4J8Vvz.gif) is currently one of my favourites.
-
what the fuck is my problem?I need to start reading these.
-
Today's strip was great. I love how Ray went from being concerned for Little Nephew, and then went straight to talking about the social worker's thong.
-
Today's strip is heck of ancient, but definitely a classic.
-
Seein' all the "favorite Achewood comic" posts featuring Nice Pete makes me happy. He's one of my favorite characters and his strips are consistently hilarious. I particularly like this one: http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=10242003
In fact, the whole arc where Nice Pete kidnaps Phillipe is incredibly well done. It's downright frightening.
-
I don't know how to say Teodor's name.
-
The line "Here is some of their hands" is a very very good line.
-
I don't know how to say Teodor's name.
Isn't it "Tee-Oh-Door"?
-
The little accent threw me off.
-
my personal favourites are Nice Pete's intro strips.
-
I usually pronounce it tay-oh-door.
-
^Ditto.
-
(http://M.assetbar.com/achewood/uua5zVJ2N)
-
Yeah, its tay-oh-door, there's an accent egu on the e. Seriously, now that I've gotten around to reading them I totally get the comic, I've never laughed so hard. Todd is the best squirrel ever.
-
accent aigu*
also wow belarus is a rather big country i have never heard of before. (wikipedia says this is where téodor comes from.)
-
Never heard of Belarus? jeez what a loser, telling people how to spell franch words and not knowing about Belarus.
That's a... European country, right? Thank you for correcting me, been a couple years since I've had to speak or write in french.
-
Belarus is the former Soviet Republic Byelorussia.
I don't think that helps, but it's true and I knew it without looking at Wikipedia because I pay attention.
-
I am pretty sure that my favorite is the first. It's just so pure.
-
I know what you mean. "Philippe is standing on it". Just stands on its own nicely. I love when they had a comic of bloopers and outtakes (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=12102001) and they had one from that strip where Philippe was standing off to the side of it.
-
Guys, apparently the ISBN in this strip (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=01022008) is for the book The Year of Eating Dangerously. I'm pretty sure Onstad just typed in 'eating dangerously' into Google and found the first result. I'm outraged that as a loyal fan of Achewood I've been betrayed by Onstad. I did not think he would use such things as Google to draw his comic. Achewood is a service that we should expect only the highest quality of work from and due to this slip in standards I hope you guys will choose to do the same until Onstad publically apologises.
Also, hipinion guys, I shaved my head a few months ago so that photo's pretty out of date.
-
It sounds a lot more like the book Ray would write though.
-
This one is my favorite: http://achewood.com/index.php?date=07192006
I don't think I've ever laughed harder at any Achewood strip. Every line is golden.
-

I'd just like to say that this strip and Nice Pete's blog made an awesome birthday present. Thank you, Onstad.
-
holy shit, the most recent Nice Pete blog was great. My loathing for Rachael Ray is epic, and it's nice to see other people share my sentiments.
-
The "other people" in this instance being a serial murderer.
-
My knowledge of Rachel Ray consists of Google Image Search, which is nice I guess.
-
My favorites change frequently, but right now, I am a fan of these:

-
HEYOOOOOO!
-
"Nostradamus wrote, The Elf wythe Fyngers of Saussage will be blessed Not with Boobyes agayn this Yeare."
Poor Rachael Ray. Everyone hates her!
-
Gimme a strip of duct tape and I can make her show 150% more watchable. What I find most annoying is when she tries to be "cute", like referring to Olive Oil as "E.V.O.O." Hey! Food Network! Get someone who's not a complete douche to tell us what's going on!
...I miss Justin Wilson.
-
[RB]: Plus think about it Ray if they can’t even repeat NUMBER THREE, DIET COKE how they gonna do with a double venti short tall nonfat mocha no foam cappuccino with two ice cubes and a half shot of sugarfree vanilla for Mackenzie who by the way is a skinny woman in Versace sunglasses and not a fat Irish man in an Aran cable sweater holding a Guinness
This made me giggle until coworkers started telling me to shut up a few minutes later.
-
I am pretty sure I am in love with the recent two strips. They are just superb.
-
I am pretty sure I am in love with the recent two strips. They are just superb.
Hell yes.
Their differences between each other and Onstad's previous output, the internal differences in tone within Friday's strip--all show Onstad as a master of his craft.
-
RAY: Check it out, dude! McDonald’s is gonna wipe Starbucks off the map by havin’ baristas and fancy coffee drinks!
ME: Man that is baloney the Venn diagram of their customer bases looks like an eight
I am not sure how long I laughed at that line alone.
Today I received a late Christmas gift from my godparents--a fifty dollar bill. When I peeked inside the envelope to see what it was, well, you know what I said (http://M.assetbar.com/achewood/uua7nlRhq).
Of course I probably would have said that even if I had never read that comic, but when I did realize that I was sharing a line with Ray I then proceeded to read top-rated strips for two hours.
-
Hey, I think Molly is a great character!
-
Still, she's definitely a supporting character. We've never gotten a true Molly storyline, apart from that one strip with the ship and stuff.
-
I like Molly's latest blog. She perfectly described the Ramones, I think.
-
That's a fairly apt and concise description of them indeed.
For those of you who remember my constant whining about Achewood, I feel obligated to say I accidentally spent about three-quarters of an hour reading Achewood last week. I'm not saying I necessarily enjoyed it or anything, but once or twice I was laughing aloud.
I'm not sure what this means to my concept of self. I need serious time to reflect on the implications.
-
Epic twist.
-
I love when he whines "Mommmmmm"
-
Well, that's the end of that then.
-
i go between hating molly with a passion, to being quite endeared to her in a flash.
-
Why do you hate her sometimes?
-
Good question
You should hate her all the time
-
I love when he whines "Mommmmmm"
Mama Smuckles had to go ruin a good thing. We didn't even get a real Tony Hawk appearance.
-
Why do you hate her sometimes?
i hate her some times because of things like this:
i love her some times because of things like this:
edit: wrong strip first time, fixed images
-
In the first strip she is being understanding and reasonable.
EDIT: Hey, you changed the strip. But still, Molly is a nice girl.
-
Seriously, all she wants is a taco and some diet Pepsi. Beef IS quite a cheap-ass, though you must consider his upbringing.
-
That last one is one of my favorites. And Molly isn't the only one who's pointed out some of Beef's less intelligent purchases.
-
Today's Achewood is the funniest one in a long, long, LONG time.
-
DRRRACULA WANTS YOU TO WEAR THE SPECIAL PURPLE PUMPS
HILARIOUS!
/
:-D
-
Beef and Molly have a hilarious sex life.
-
Oh, god. You know someone has run a /34/ on Beef and Molly. You just know it.
-
Teodor's expression in the fifth panel is GOLDEN.
-
Oh, god. You know someone has run a /34/ on Beef and Molly. You just know it.
Oh god you are such a horrible person. You are a horrible, horrible person. You are dog shit.
-
Does anyone else use assetbar (http://m.assetbar.com/achewood/uua46cvkx#comment_27)?

Oh, god. You know someone has run a /34/ on Beef and Molly. You just know it.
Oh god you are such a horrible person. You are a horrible, horrible person. You are dog shit.
See, when I say things like that, it doesn't mean look for it. There is no HTML tag for [/see].
Goodness... remind me not to mention necro-bestiality. that would be horrible...
-
Does anyone else use assetbar (http://m.assetbar.com/achewood/uua46cvkx#comment_27)?
Yeah dude, daily.
-
I will probably regret asking this, but what is /34/? I am afraid to Google it now after seeing Cartilage Head's reaction...
-
Rule 34 of the internet.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=rule+34
-
Believe when it says NO EXCEPTIONS.
The internet constantly touches me in a bad place. Here... let me show you on the doll...
-
Ah, I forgot about the educational wonder that is Urban Dictionary. Thank you!
-
Ray's mom's flow chart is pretty perfect.

Does anyone else use assetbar (http://m.assetbar.com/achewood/uua46cvkx#comment_27)?
Yeah dude, daily.
I thought I saw a JohnnyC there.
I use it too, daily, username is Dovey.
-
Oh wow, I hadn't even clicked the link.
Dan, that was you? That's immaculate.
-
Guys I hate to necropost (except if it's this thread) but can I get a resounding WTF?
Like, seriously.
-
What is Onstad doing with Téodor of late?
-
Wait what the fuck I made this thread.
-
And yeah this is weirdness I haven't seen in Achewood since the original Cartilage Head strips.
Except it's way fucking weirder.
I'm a little worried about Teodor.
-
Poor dude cannot just get a break.
-
Achewood is kinda shit now. It's completely lost it's pizazz. I hope Onstad has realised this and has started the excruciating process of killing every single character.
-
I agree that Onstad has finally kind of lost me. I think he wants too badly to be taken seriously at this point, and his attempts to combine that with humor are kind of falling short.
-
It's almost like a parody of Achewood these days.
-
I agree that Onstad has finally kind of lost me. I think he wants too badly to be taken seriously at this point, and his attempts to combine that with humor are kind of falling short.
Really, you think the more recent strips were an attempt to be taken seriously?
I am not sure "serious" is the correct word here. Achewood is utterly farcical, occasionally bordering on surreal. I can't think of a time it was ever particularly serious.
-
I agree that Onstad has finally kind of lost me. I think he wants too badly to be taken seriously at this point, and his attempts to combine that with humor are kind of falling short.
Really, you think the more recent strips were an attempt to be taken seriously?
Yeah um I really can't parse that comment in my brain at all Cory. Are you seriously saying that you think "I've got a ten-inch cock, and I don't have to lie about that" is an attempt to be taken seriously?
I think that the last few storylines have ranged between inconsistent and straight-up rubbish, but the few one-shots there are these days are still pretty great and this current story is shaping up really great. It may never be the brilliance of '04-'06 again and I honestly wouldn't be completely sad if Onstad gave up right now (provided he goes and does something else) but I wouldn't put it past him to make something truly excellent again.
